The X Factor is the biggest television show in the UK - it regularly attracts audiences of up to 15m viewers - a phenomenal amount. Anyway, the show has been finished for little more than 2 hours, and its already affecting UK iTunes charts:

iTunes Update

#49 & #249 Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father
#84 The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved
#95 Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
#145 Girls Aloud - Untouchable
#155 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah
#192 Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World
#194 Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough
#232 Bon Jovi - Always
#248 Beyoncé - Broken Hearted Girl
#280 X Factor Finalists 2008 - Hero

Another recent example is the effect that AGT had on Mariah Carey's Obsessed in the US. Her one off appearance spiked iTunes sales in her native homeland, and the song has been increasing on airplay ever since (as well as sales).

The effect of TV shows on sales is just phenomenal! Any other famous examples?

Exactly. The IASF would have sold about 250K-350K without the XFactor support. Now she has sold well over 700K. After the massive top 5 success of Sweet Dreams in the UK, it could even go 3x Platinum someday! :D

Yeah! That one show changed it all for Beyonce!

10-21-23-24-9-8-9-10-8-7-7-9-12-12-11-11-15-19-16-10-10-7-3-4-5-7-10-8-14-15-25-25-31-31-24-

40 weeks so far in the UK top 40, the album has never dipped below 31, and in fact it continues to fluctuate up and down the charts. It really has proven to be the making of Beyonce. I've highlighted the chart run following the X Factor appearance, and its been amazing. In the next 2-3 weeks, it should surpass 800k hard sales - over 650k of those followed the X Factor

The effect to a lesser extent on Celine's Taking Chances:

5[55.592]-10[33.495]-16-25-27-20-14[39.759]-30...

Celine is already a household name in the UK. However, I personally feel that if it wasn't for her appearance on the X Factor, this album would've stalled with hard sales of around 250k. Instead, the album has gone on to sell over 385,000 hard copies!

Added to which, the single peaked at 40 the week following her X Factor Appearance:

58-40-56-71-126-188

TV shows help loads regardless of who you are! :D Who else?

Amy Winehouse and her 5 grammies boosted the sales of "Back to Black" allowing it to go double Platinum. The album actually skyrocketed at #2 after her enormous success at the grammies.

Anyway, if it weren't for the Grammies victory BTB wouldn't have sold more than 1,5 million in the US. Now it's has sold well over 2 million copies here (2,200,000++)! (staggering, considering that it produced only one #9 hit here!)
