Robbie Williams and Whitney Houston are set to make their respective comebacks with a series of concerts at the O2 arena early next year.

AEG, the US entertainment giant that owns the 20,000-seat venue, has been searching for “marquee names” to fill some of the 23 dates in early 2010 when Michael Jackson was due to perform.

With both Williams, 35, and Houston, 45, releasing long-awaited new albums this year, they believe they have found two artists with the profile and repertoire to sell out *several gigs at the east London venue.

The move will save millions for AEG, which has failed to book new shows for 20 nights this year, left open after Jackson's sudden death last month.

An AEG source told the Standard: “Robbie's eagerly-awaited album will be out soon and he is likely to be touring Europe next year. It will be perfect for him to start with shows at the O2.
“Whitney Houston has been on the O2 arena wish-list for a while — she has the voice and hits to sell the arena out several times over.”

Williams's new album Reality Killed the Video Star will be released in October, with the singer's manager David Enthoven promising fans “a big pop record with four or five smash hits”. It will be Williams's first album since his 2006 flop Rudebox, and follows two successful comeback tours and albums from his former band Take That.

Houston was one of the biggest-selling artists in the late Eighties and early Nineties, before drug and alcohol addictions derailed her career. Her new album I Look To You is being released next month and will be her first release since 2002's Just Whitney.

This month she announced her comeback at the Mandarin Oriental in London before a VIP crowd of record executives and entrepreneurs including Topshop's Sir Philip Green and music guru Clive Davis.

Both singers will perform their greatest hits in addition to material from their new albums.

From Billboard.com; "Ask Billboard":

MATERIAL GIRL VS. EVERY WOMAN

Hi Gary,

Whitney Houston and Madonna are making simultaneous returns to the charts, harkening back to the diva rivalry the two staged in the '80s. Which one of these pop stars has sold the most albums? Conflicting sources show one selling more than the other, and vice versa. I know you will have the most reliable information.

Thanks,

Neil Massey
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Hi Neil,

Houston and Madonna do indeed grace a number of charts this week, including the Billboard Hot 100, to which each superstar returns. See yesterday's Chart Beat for details.

As for who has sold the most albums since the singers' arrivals, let's use two sources. Because the pair enjoyed major successes prior to the advent of Nielsen SoundScan data in 1991, let's first look at Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) figures, which encompass the spans of both singers' entire extraordinary careers.

According to the RIAA, Madonna holds a slight edge over Houston. Madonna ranks 15th all-time with 63.5 million units certified. Houston places 20th with 54 million. (The Beatles lead with 170 million units certified).

Using Nielsen SoundScan data (again, since 1991), Madonna holds a much wider lead. She has sold 26,347,000 albums, compared to 9,489,000 for Houston. Part of the reason for the discrepancy is that Nielsen SoundScan categorizes 1992's "The Bodyguard" as a soundtrack, while the RIAA considers it a Houston album. It has sold 11,808,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. If we were to add that album's sales to Houston's other efforts, Madonna would still lead, as Houston's sum would be 21,297,000. And, to add further unavoidable confusion, "Waiting to Exhale" (5,100,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan) is considered by both sources to be a soundtrack, while "Evita" (2,000,000) is a soundtrack to SoundScan and a Madonna album for the RIAA. All told, Madonna would still lead even if those sets were included in each artist's totals.

Here are Madonna's 10 best-selling albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

5,777,000, "The Immaculate Collection" (1990)
3,837,000, "Ray of Light" (1998)
2,923,000, "Music" (2000)
2,309,000, "Bedtime Stories" (1994)
2,086,000, "Something to Remember" (1995)
1,890,000, "Erotica" (1992)
1,695,000, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" (2005)
1,385,000, "GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2" (2001)
725,000, "Hard Candy" (2008)
675,000, "American Life" (2003)

Here are the totals of Houston's five studio albums to date, plus her best-of and holiday sets:

2,753,000, "My Love Is Your Love" (1998)
1,728,000, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990)
1,644,000, "The Greatest Hits" (2000)
1,038,000, "Whitney Houston" (1985)
972,000, "Whitney" (1987)
737,000, "Just Whitney" (2002)
433,000, "Holiday Album" (2003)

The next showdown is set. Houston releases "I Look to You" Aug. 25, and Madonna offers "Celebration," her third hits compilation, Sept. 29. The latter date is scheduled to feature new albums from two other female superstars, which should make for a notable scramble for the top of the Billboard 200: Mariah Carey releases "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" and Barbra Streisand returns with her first studio album since 2005, "Love Is the Answer." Female-led alternative rock act Paramore, featuring singer Hayley Williams, will also compete for the summit the same week with its sophomore set, "Brand New Eyes."

well lets hope she is working on her voice before the Good Morning America concert on 1st Sep. A bad comeback performance could be career suicide

But she needs to jump on the promotion bike and peddle as hard as she can, I hope Clive doesn't think she can sell just based on her name anymore. She had to promote the hell out of My Love Is Your Love, this will be even more difficult to make an impact as the lead singles aren't performing as well.

OPRAH AND WHITNEY: You knew it was coming. Oprah Winfrey launches the 24th season of her talk show with what she calls “the most anticipated music interview of the decade," a sit-down with singing icon Whitney Houston on Monday, Sept. 14. This marks Houston’s first interview in nearly seven years and follows the release of her new album, I Look To You, on August 31. (8/19p)

Ask Billboard: Madonna vs. Whitney vs. Mariah

This e-mail is a follow up to last week's entry from Neil Massey, who asked about album sales of Whitney Houston and Madonna. I'm curious as to how Mariah Carey stacks up against her two fellow superstars. I know Madonna and Houston began their careers earlier than Carey, but Carey has been very productive with her albums, especially in the '90s. —Leo del Castillo - Baguio City, Philippines

Bill Trust of Ask Billboard replies:

Accounting for certain complexities in how soundtracks are categorized by each source, Madonna's totals top Houston's. As noted last week, according to the RIAA, Madonna ranks 15th all-time with 63.5 million units certified. Houston places 20th with 54 million.

According to Nielsen SoundScan - whose data begins in 1991, after the two stars had begun their careers - album sales since that year stand at 26,347,000 for Madonna and 23,786,000 for Houston (again, including soundtrack sets such as "The Bodyguard," which is officially considered a soundtrack to Nielsen SoundScan).

With Madonna and Houston having head starts in the '80s over Carey, who arrived with the release of her self-titled debut collection in 1990, how does the lattermost artist fare against the other two? Like last week, let's compare using figures from both the RIAA (where longevity gives a potential edge to Madonna and Houston) and Nielsen SoundScan, where a span of 1991 to date covers a period in which all three performers have actively released product.

The RIAA places Carey just one spot below Madonna, in 16th place among all artists with 62.5 million units certified. So, per the RIAA, it's Madonna (63.5 million), Carey (62.5) and Houston (54) in this comparison.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey is the clear winner by a wide margin, actually topping the total album sales - again, since 1991 - of Madonna and Houston combined. Carey's sum stands at 51,833,000.

Here is a look at Mariah Carey's top-selling albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

7,556,000, "Daydream" (1995)
7,189,000, "Music Box" (1993)
5,912,000, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (2005)
4,993,000, "Merry Christmas" (1994)
4,845,000, "Mariah Carey (1990)
3,719,000, "Butterfly" (1997)
3,703,000, "#1's" (1998)
3,584,000, "Emotions" (1991)
2.946,000, "Rainbow" (1999)
2,731,000, "MTV Unplugged EP" (1992)

Again, the numbers will change in upcoming weeks, as all three stars will serve up new product and add to their extraordinary sales totals. Houston's "I Look to You" is due Aug. 25, while on Sept. 29, Madonna releases the best-of collection "Celebration" and Carey offers "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."

Label has high hopes for Whitney Houston comeback

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years," Whitney Houston sings on what is, in fact, her latest comeback album.

The 46-year-old pop singer, a long-term resident of the record charts during the 1980s and '90s, officially ends a seven-year hiatus on Monday with the U.S. release of her sixth studio album, "I Look To You."

Early reviews are promising and Houston's Sony Corp-owned Arista Records label hopes it will become one of the biggest sellers of the year.

The music industry desperately needs a hit. Annual U.S. sales in 2009 are on track to slide for the eighth time in nine years, ravaged by the recession, piracy and competition from other forms of entertainment such as video games.

Houston could also do with a hit. Her previous album "Just Whitney" in 2002, also was billed as a comeback and was the worst-selling of her career. She got more attention in the ensuing years for her rocky personal life, including multiple stints in drug rehab and a bitter divorce from former R&B star Bobby Brown.

In fact, she half-jokingly said last month that she had been planning to retire to an island when her mentor, record-industry chieftain Clive Davis, phoned 3 1/2 years ago to lure her back to the studio.

Davis, who has closely overseen Houston's career since signing her at a New York nightclub in 1983, lined up such A-listers as R&B singers Alicia Keys and R. Kelly, and prolific tunesmith Diane Warren to write songs for Houston.

"IT'S A BEYONCE WORLD"

Keys wrote the single "Million Dollar Bill," which received a warm reception at radio stations earlier this month. But will that translate into big album sales, especially when there's a new crop of superstars in the spotlight?

"It's a Beyonce world," said Caryn Ganz, an editor at Rolling Stone magazine. "I don't think Whitney has a clear place anymore."

She predicted early sales would be strong, then taper off.

Arista agrees with the first half of that assessment. Industry sources expect the album will sell between 300,000 and 400,000 copies across the United States during its first week, easily taking the No. 1 spot during a late-summer slump.

"This is a cultural event," said Scott Seviour, the label's senior VP of marketing and artist development. "The enthusiasm and the energy for this release is palpable."

Such a start would outpace first-week tallies for recent releases by Kelly Clarkson (255,000) and Madonna (280,000) but fall short of those for Mariah Carey (463,000), Beyonce (482,000) and Britney Spears (505,000).

"Just Whitney," the only album that Davis did not work on, debuted at No. 9 in 2002 with 205,000 copies and sold about 730,000, overall. Houston's worldwide sales of albums, singles and videos stand at 170 million units, according to Arista.

The label has left no marketing stone unturned, targeting Houston's core fan base of 30- to 55-year-old women, as well as the gay and lesbian community, Seviour said.

HOUSTON, THERE'S NO PROBLEM: After two days in the street, the Whitney Houston album appears to be selling in the 200k range. How far above that can it go? Tune in tomorrow morning for more. (9/1p)

Gillyberto

OK, so heres the deal - this is what I expected, yes. But tbh, these sales are a bit mediocre. Not only because it's Whitney, one of the best selling female artist of all time. But also because this is her first studio album in 8 years. I would of expected at least 300k (at first) for this comeback. She doesn't have promo, no, nor videos. But just they hype and name alone should of helped her sale more. I hope her sales dont rocket down after first week!

Some people are expecting so much WW!

I would say - 600k-1m USA and 1.5 - 2 m WW. It's not very impressive when you take in concideration this is suppose to be her comeback

James
09-02-2009, 09:00 AM
This is what I expected also, I think Whitney fans were expecting a 700k + debut LOL.

I think this is very respectable considering the lack of promo, no video etc.

Gillyberto
09-03-2009, 01:51 AM
Well know that she's debuting with higher sales, this is doing pretty good atm.

But I'll wait a couple of weeks before I can judge. She has to do TONS of promo to keep this alive, since her singles aren't doing that job.

Wayne

She has Oprah twice which should give her strong sales! Having the Oprah taping air during her third week of sales was very smart

WHITNEY HOUSTON'S I LOOK TO YOU DEBUTS AT NO. 1 ACROSS THE GLOBE

WHITNEY LAUNCHES OPRAH'S SEASON PREMIERE WITH POWERFUL INTERVIEW AND PERFORMANCE ON SEPTEMBER 14 AND SEPTEMBER 15

NEW YORK, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Proving that it was well worth the wait, Whitney Houston's long-awaited album I Look To You debuts at No. 1 on several charts across the world, including the US Top Albums and R&B Album charts, according to Nielsen/Soundscan. With 304,801 units sold within the first week of release in the US, this marks Whitney's biggest first week sales of her career and the best selling first week by a female artist this year! Houston's No. 1 position extends across the globe and claims the top spots in Canada, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.

Led by the dual release of the album title track and "Million Dollar Bill" at radio, coupled with presale promotional campaigns on Amazon.com, QVC and iTunes, and a heavily promoted appearance on Good Morning America, the chart-topping result marks the official return of "The Voice."

And the critics agree! The New York Times boasts that Whitney "re-emerges with full diva qualifications," USA Today said: "Strong, confident and ready, she clearly hadn't forgotten how to sing imbuing the material with emotional power." The Washington Post cites I Look To You "hits all the right marks" and the Associated Press states "the pop queen still has a dazzling voice that can leave you spellbound."

The spell will continue next week when Whitney Houston launches the 24th season of The Oprah Winfrey Show with a two-day event, inclusive of what Oprah calls "the best interview I've ever done," and an emotional performance of "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" that had "grown men and women weeping in the aisles" according to Oprah's recent Twitter post. "The Oprah Winfrey Show: Season Premiere: Oprah And Whitney Houston - The First Interview" airs Monday, September 14, 2009. "The Oprah Winfrey Show: Season Premiere Part II: Whitney Houston's Show-Stopping Surprise" airs Tuesday, September 15, 2009 (check local listings).

Whitney Houston debuts at No. 1

By JOHN WILLIAMS
Senior Editor, JAM! Showbiz

Whitney Houston made like it was the '80s all over again by scoring the top album in the land.

Her long-awaited return, "I Look To You," shot to the top of the Canadian charts selling 10,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.

It's easily Houston's best opening totals since Neilsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1996. Her last album, 2002's "Just Whitney," debuted at No. 85 with just 3,000 in sales.

--------------------------

Wonderful news from the UK. Million Dollar Bill is A-Listed on BBC Radio 2's Playlist, which is the biggest and most important radio station in terms of audience figures. It also means that you should expect a huge rise on the UK radio airplay chart in the next couple of weeks.

Whitney Houston Looks To #1 On Billboard

Whitney Houston's I Look To You

The diva's comeback seems secure, as I Look to You sells 311,000 in its first week.

By Gil Kaufman

After seven years off the charts, Whitney Houston has proven she's still got it. The R&B diva will debut at #1 on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart with her comeback album, I Look To You. The LP notched 305,000 in sales last week (and 6,000 copies were sold before its official release), a strong showing that handily outperformed 2002's Just Whitney, which managed just 205,000 in its first week for a #9 debut

Whitney Houston Debuts Atop Euro Chart

September 10, 2009 - Global | Retail | Rock and Pop

By Paul Sexton, London

Whitney Houston mirrors her Billboard 200 success with a No. 1 debut on European Top 100 Albums with her comeback set "I Look To You" (Arista/RCA/Sony Music Entertainment). There's also a new champion on European Hot 100 Singles, where David Guetta scores his second No. 1 in less than two months with "Sexy Chick" (Gum/Positiva/Virgin/EMI), featuring Akon.

Houston was last on the pan-European survey at the end of 2007 with Arista's "Ultimate Collection," which reached No. 10. The 2002 ballads retrospective "Love, Whitney" reached only No. 44, while 2000's "The Greatest Hits" made No.2. Houston's last studio album, 1998's "My Love Is Your Love," reached No. 1 during an epic 67-week run on the European survey, and was certified for shipments of three million units across the region. "I Look To You" posts best-selling starts in Germany and Italy, other arrivals including No. 2 in Sweden and No. 3 in France. The set is out in the U.K. on Oct. 19.

I read that it seems strange doesn't it? Also didn't she sell 311k in total or does that not count on the chart?

Does seem a little strange that you could have a Europian number one album based on 53k, thats not that much..

If thats the case I think we should do a Vanity Edge album and promote the shit out of it.... I am sure we could sell 53k as a team effort LOL.

Wayne
09-11-2009, 11:45 AM
Well she sold 305k in the US in the first 'official' week. The other near 6k copies that were sold were sold prior to its official release date, and therefore missed her opening week sales tally. If this total is indeed correct, it would mean she couldn't have sold no more than 15-20k in Germany - one of the 5 biggest music markets in the world - which would be shocking!

These figures make me sad about the state of the music industry more than anything else.

I mean looking at this weeks BB200 even her last album Just Whitney would have charted at number one in the US but it came in at number 9 and that was only 2002!!!!! What a massive decline  That album is considered a massive flop selling 1m in the US when 1m now would be considered a hit........ and it wasn't that long ago

HITS:

YOUR WEAKEND TOP 15 (ISH) CHART PREVIEW: The top of next week’s chart will look something like this (albeit with more traditional numbering), a mix of old and new names. Jay-Z will easily take the top spot with a total that may be the best we’ve seen since the Dave Matthews Band debuted with over 400k during the first week of June. The Beatles will score five in our Top 15, with Abbey Road leading the way. Michael Jackson’s lone remaining title in the Top 15 will be Number Ones, likely just missing the Top 10.

With appearances from Whitney Houston, Brooks & Dunn and all of the above, one might start to question whether it’s really 2009. But records from the debuting Boys Like Girls as well as such holdovers as Miley Cyrus, Zac Brown Band, Kings of Leon and Taylor Swift are present to remind us what century this is.

1. ** Jay-Z (Roc Nation) 300-350k
2. Miley Cyrus (Hollywood) 110-120k
3. Whitney Houston (Arista/RMG) 75-80k

Looking at second week losses of around 75%!! But she's on Oprah next week, which should give her another burst.

the article just said that its possible that the album could have sold 50.000 copies in Germany...the article is written in subjunctive.. there is currently no system in Germany that tracks weekly album sales down (like soundscan)..

maybe she sold 50.000 or 30.000 or 20.000... the german music market is dead

Wayne

I Look To You - Whitney Houston
This week's highest new entry comes from comback queen, Whitney Houston and her new album, I Look To You. It's her first album of new material since 2002's Just Whitney and her first to chart since 1998's My Love Is Your Love (No.42 Nov. '98). THe album has already gone to No.1 in a number of countries, including the U.S. and Canada, as well as topping the European album chart. I Look To You features some big-name collaborators including Akon, R. Kelly and Alicia Keys. Houston's highest placed solo album in the ARIA chart was 1990's I'm Your Baby Tonight (No.10 Dec. '90). The soundtrack to The Bodyguard - a film she starred in and sung most of the songs for - is her highest charting release (No.1 Jan. '93).

Week 3 Hits Daily prediction: Whitney #2 with 140-150k Lead [-]

WEAKEND TOP 13 (OR SO) PREVIEW: A number of newcomers will penetrate the top of the HITS Album Sales chart next Tuesday but, after all is said and done, Jay-Z will continue to be on top, with Whitney Houston feeling the Oprah Effect at #2. Top 10 bows for Reprise's Muse, Universal Motown's Kid Cudi, Cash Money/ Universal Motown's Drake and Asylum's Lil Boosie will fill in the gaps between old standbys The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Here's a peak at the leader board as we head into the weakend:

1. Jay-Z (Roc Nation) 240-260k
2. Whitney Houston (Arista/RMG) 140-150k
3. ** Muse (Reprise) 110-120k
4. ** Kid Cudi (Universal Motown) 100-110k
5. Miley Cyrus (Hollywood) 80-85k
6. The Beatles, Abbey Road (Apple/Capitol) 60-65k
7. ** Drake (Cash Money/Universal Motown) 60-65k
8. Michael Jackson, Number Ones (Epic) 45-50k
9. ** Lil Boosie (Asylum) 40-45k
10. Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 40-45k
11. The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper (Apple/Capitol) 40-45k
12. ** Megadeth (Roadrunner) 40-45k
13. Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 40-45k

I think its blatantly apparent that Miss Houston is no longer a singles artist. The album is charting well all over the world but the singles are struggling like hell.

I think this maybe Clive's vision for the remainder of her career anyway, he keeps comparing her to Babs, few appearences and album sales but no commercial single success.

Although it does look promisin for Million Dollar Bill in the UK going off the airplay charts

Wayne
09-24-2009, 02:12 PM
Its the staple of the AC market - Celine is the biggest proponent of it. Barbra is another big proponent too - very well sold albums, but comparatively average or even floppy singles. But still, I'm sure Clive would take a Platinum selling album over a 2-3xPlatinum digital selling single

James
09-24-2009, 02:20 PM
as much as I hate to say it there really is an age where you are no longer a singles artist (unless your Madonna)

My Love Is Your Love era was going to be her last succesful singles era regardless of the fall from grace afterwards. I think 40 is about about the threshold.

She is kind of in limbo at the moment...... she is not recording the typical AC stuff but it's not completely contemporary.

I fully expect at least one more album.... curious to see which way they take it.

unfortunately true.. but i guess with justin timberlake on a record whitney would get radio support again. :hide:

^ lololol

I don't think whitney can sell another album like this if her singles flop. These are- pity sales,7-years-worth-of-anticipation sales, curiosity sales.

I don't think clive wanted THIS.He shud just release salute already.

Wayne

But some artists just don't require radio support to sell an album in good (by today's standards) quantities) and I think Whitney is one of those

No she isn't; look what happened with Just Whitney ;) Gimme1mimi is right: Whitney sold what she did because of the anticipation built up due to her 7-year-absence and sympathy sales.

James
09-28-2009, 07:20 AM
i can't agree with it being sympathy sales, however maybe some of it is curiosity.

Alot of Whitney's sales have always been from "casual fans". Older fans who are shopping and see the album on the shelf and grab a copy. They don't tend to be die-hard fans like Mariah's fanbase. So the hype and the time between albums contributed.

What I don't believe is that people buy singers albums out of pity, you have to be a fan in the first place, why would you buy something you had no intention of listening to just out of sympathy?

HeatSeeker
09-28-2009, 08:14 AM
Well take how she was on Oprah. Technically, her voice sounded quite awful for Whitney's standard, yet people were applauding and cheering and Oprah herself was in tears. The story of a major worldwide star losing her battle to drugs and then recovering and still giving it her all seems to resonate well with people and it motivates them to hit the stores and grab themselves a copy. Maybe not so much sympathy, but inspiration.

i'm always surprised what so many ppl's expectations are.. when was the last time a 46 Y.O. woman had a mega hit on her own in america?? I think it was cher in 1999.. (10 years ago)

James

The lady is just not a singles artist anymore, not a bad thing. To be a singles artist you need to promote the hell out of your singles. Her main promo was Oprah and she sang an album track. Her singles would have faired better with promotion but I don't see that as the vision for this album, it's more about album sales.

People bought the album because they liked Whitney, Oprah showed people she was back in a good place therefore encorouging people to buy the album because Whitney was back to making good music. But that is no different to any other artist, you go on a show and promote your work, some wear tiny clothes, some people use gimmicks, Whitney used her story. People are buying the album because they want to buy good music from an artist they like. Once they have the album it's up to them to decide if they are happy with it.

If it was the case that people got pity sales then that would apply to Tina, Mariah, Mary J, Chaka. I just don't think thats the case. People either like the aritst or the music to spend their money on it.

I wish they would start playing MDB on younger stations, because I can't see this airplay translating into sales. I dunno I think most of it is down to being a-listed on Radio 2 and big players on there do not generally chart high on the singles chart.

I mean look at Michael Buble he is higher than Whitney on the airplay chart but he isn't gonna have a number one single.

pretty good stats Miss Houston. I am still pissed off at the way the Greatest Hits was handled in the US, It had the protential to sell SHIT LOADS but stupid LA Reid cocked it up. I mean it actually beat Britney to number 1 in the UK.

LOL @ Just Whitney going platinum..... buhless

Wayne
10-15-2009, 11:32 AM
Yeah, it was certified platinum but has sold less than 750,000 copies!!

James
10-15-2009, 11:38 AM
well how does that work? Is that some back handed dealing or something? lol

Wayne
10-15-2009, 11:43 AM
Almost every music society in the world - be it RIAA, SNEP, BPI, RIAJ, CRIA, ARIA - they all award certifications based on shipments. Guns n Roses most recent studio effort also has a Platinum certification, and at last check had only just surpassed 600,000 in real sales.

The best way to remember it is Soundscan tracks over the counter retail sales (but excludes Music Clubs) whereas the RIAA tracks shipments. Just Whitney shipped over 1m copies across America, but only sold less than 750,00 of them, meaning the rest are probably lying about somewhere!

James
10-15-2009, 12:06 PM
ok..

I have another question Charts Oracle ;)

Sony are releasing "The Collection" which includes her first 2 albums and My Love Is Your Love..... dunno why.

Does this count as a whole new album or go towards the previous album sales..... you get what I mean?

BTW ew at the cheapness of this release....

http://images-cache.cd-wow.com/tn/170/STM/5510000/5507057.jpg

I hate that picture, always have

Wayne

This will be very tricky. Hmm. I imagine that it won't chart very highly first of all - Whitney's catalogue sales in the US are in the doldrums - each of the albums that feature in this collection sells less than 10,000 copies per year in the USA (in fact, her first two sell around 3,000 copies per year I think!). It will chart as a separate release, and will not be counted as part of the previous album's and their sales. But each disc will probably be counted separately for certification purposes. For e.g. if it sold 5,000 copies in its first week, then RIAA would look at this as 15,000 copies shipped. Its very tricky. To give you an indication of how much success these sorts of albums have, here are the top selling 3 Disc compilations in the USA:

I think its absolutely fantastic! She'll almost definitely go Platinum in the USA. I predict a good 400-500,000 copies for the UK - we LOVE Whitney here. She's sold out 5 dates on her tour, and an extra date at the 18,000 capacity O2 arena has been added.

In all, I expect around 2-2.5m copies WW, which is pretty damn good!!

James

In all, I expect around 2-2.5m copies WW, which is pretty damn good!!

WOW really, I would be chuffed is she sold that. Considering the album is very safe (music wise) and there are no hit singles..... anywhere in the world LOL, that's massive numbers

Wayne
10-16-2009, 11:27 AM
Well I read that the album had an advance shipment of over 500,000 in the USA, showing that the record label had high expectations for the album. The fact that the album has an additional 200k+ speaks wonders! She truly is an album seller - ala Celine, Madonna.

She has a chance of getting a top 10 single next week in the UK too - everybody is doing Whitney songs this week on X Factor, and the Sunday show is on for an extra 15 minutes, probably meaning Whitney will perform more than one song! :) My 400-500k prediction is a ball-park figure - she may sell more than that, less than that - who knows! But I think she has a hit on her hands here in the UK :D

James
