There is a change at the top of the chart, after stepping down to number 2 last week, this week Adele is climbing back up a place, knocking Nicole Scherzinger off her perch at number 1, she slides to 2nd place. This is ‘Someone like you’s 5th week on the throne, the first song to spend 5 weeks on top since Katy Perry’s ‘I kissed a girl’ in 2008 and the first record to leave the top and re-claim the number 1 spot since Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’ last October.
Right behind, Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Just can’t get enough’ is charging up the chart once again, after rising 12 places to 15 last week, this week it repeats that climb jumping to number 3. It now becomes their 13th UK Top 10 hit and 10th to reach the top 3, pushing The Wanted’s ‘Gold forever’ down to 4th place.
Also climbing the top 10 is Eminem, Dre and Skylar Grey’s ‘I need a doctor’, creeping up 1 more place to a new number 8 peak.
This week’s second-highest new entry is the third comic relief hit of 2011; debuting at 11 is Scottish singer Susan Boyle and Peter Kay’s alter-ego Geraldine McQueen’s version of ‘I know him so well’, originally a number 1 hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson in 1985 and a number 5 hit for Steps (as part of a double a side with ‘Words are not enough) in 2001. It’s Susan’s third UK Top 40 hit, the biggest being ‘Wild horses’ which peaked at 9 in December 2009. Under the guise of Geraldine, Peter Kay has had 2 previous hits ‘The winners song’ which peaked at 2 and ‘Once upon a Christmas song’ which peaked at 5, both in 2008. Under the name of Peter Kay, he’s had 2 chart toppers, both for charity most memorably ‘Is this the way to Amarillo’ in 2005, although that didn’t feature vocals from Peter, just an appearance on the video.
Right behind is Snoop Dogg’s ‘Sweat’, jumping 4 places up to number 12. Could it continue to climb next week and becomes his 8th top 10 success?
There’s good news for Noah and the Whale, it’s been a slow progression but it seems that ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N’ could indeed go on to become their 2nd top 10 hit, this week it climbs 6 places to another new peak of number 14 in its 9th charting week.
One of last week’s new arrivals making upward progress is Mann and 50 Cent’s ‘Buzzin’, up 9 places to number 15, now making it Mann’s first top 20 hit and 50 Cent’s 15th.
Tiesto and Diplo’s ‘C’mon’ continues to loiter around the bottom half of the top 20, this week rising back up 2 places to number 16 in its 5th charting week, now 2 places shy of its number 13 peak it hit 3 weeks ago.
Just inside the top 20 is yet another big climber; in its 2nd charting week Kanye West, Drake and Rihanna’s ‘All of the lights’ is jumping 13 places up the chart to number 19. In the process it become Kanye’s 16th ,Drake’s 2nd and Rihanna’s 23rd top 20 hit. And as if that wasn’t enough, Kanye has another chart hit, his duet with Katy Perry, ‘E.T’ debuts at 29 bringing his UK Top 40 hit count up to 24. Good news also for Rihanna fans, she has 4 simultaneous hits yet again as former chart topper ‘Only girl’ re-enters at 38, clocking up a 21st charting week, ‘Who’s that chick’ clocks up a 17th charting week at 28 and ‘S&M’ spends an 8th week in the chart at number 6
This week’s second-highest new entry belongs to US Electro-poppers LMFAO; their 3rd UK Top 40 hit ‘Party rock anthem’ debuts at 21. They were last in the countdown alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis and Fergie on chart topper ‘Gettin’ over you’ in June last year.
The cast of Glee are back in the chart once again; at 23 is the birth of their 16th UK Top 40 hit; a combination of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ which peaked at 10 in 1983 and 12 in 2007 and The Yeah yeah yeah’s ‘Heads will roll’ which has not charted in the UK top 40, but resides at 89 this week through exposure of this new version.
One of last week’s new entries not faring well however is Parade’s ‘Louder’, after a number 10 debut, it plummets 15 places to 25.
Just below is another climber, Birdy’s ‘Skinny love’ is up 2 places at 27 its 3rd charting week, but still yet to climb any higher than number 25.
At 29 is the arrival of a 10th hit for Katy Perry and Kanye West (as mentioned above) entitled ‘E.T’ and re-entering at 38 is Katy’s ‘Firework’ which peaked at number 3 last November; it now clocks up its 22nd week on the countdown
One of last week’s big climbers has stalled, Jermih and 50 Cent’s ‘Down on me’ spends its 3rd charting week as a non-mover at 30.
Just outside the top 30 is the arrival of a third solo hit for US R&B star Cee Lo Green; ‘Bright lights, bigger city’ debuts at 31, arriving just in time to take the place of his former ‘F**k you’ which slides to 39 in its 25th week in the top 40.
Martin Solveig and Dragonette’s ‘Hello’ may have failed to crack the top 10, but its chart longevity continues, this week it moves back up yet again, climbing a place at 35 in its 12th charting week.
As if climbing back to the top wasn’t enough, Adele also has a 10th week in the top 10 with ‘Rolling in the deep’, but that’s not all, her huge hit ‘Make you feel my love’ which has charted on and off since late 2008 climbs back up yet again, rising 1 to 36.
The final climber to report is Enrique Iglesias’ and Ludacris’ former top 10 hit ‘Tonight’, climbing 2 at 37 in its 8th charting week.
What will happen in next week’s countdown – Could Adele hang on to the top spot for a 6th week? If she does it will be the longest stint at the top since Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ in the summer of 2007. She faces competition from potential climbers from Black Eyed Peas, Dr Dre and The Wanted and also some strong competition from new releases including Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On the floor’, Katy B’s ‘Broken record’ and Flo Rida and Akon’s ‘Who dat girl’.
