There is a change at the top of the chart, after stepping down to number 2 last week, this week Adele is climbing back up a place, knocking Nicole Scherzinger off her perch at number 1, she slides to 2nd place. This is ‘Someone like you’s 5th week on the throne, the first song to spend 5 weeks on top since Katy Perry’s ‘I kissed a girl’ in 2008 and the first record to leave the top and re-claim the number 1 spot since Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’ last October.

Right behind, Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Just can’t get enough’ is charging up the chart once again, after rising 12 places to 15 last week, this week it repeats that climb jumping to number 3. It now becomes their 13th UK Top 10 hit and 10th to reach the top 3, pushing The Wanted’s ‘Gold forever’ down to 4th place.

Also climbing the top 10 is Eminem, Dre and Skylar Grey’s ‘I need a doctor’, creeping up 1 more place to a new number 8 peak.

This week’s second-highest new entry is the third comic relief hit of 2011; debuting at 11 is Scottish singer Susan Boyle and Peter Kay’s alter-ego Geraldine McQueen’s version of ‘I know him so well’, originally a number 1 hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson in 1985 and a number 5 hit for Steps (as part of a double a side with ‘Words are not enough) in 2001. It’s Susan’s third UK Top 40 hit, the biggest being ‘Wild horses’ which peaked at 9 in December 2009. Under the guise of Geraldine, Peter Kay has had 2 previous hits ‘The winners song’ which peaked at 2 and ‘Once upon a Christmas song’ which peaked at 5, both in 2008. Under the name of Peter Kay, he’s had 2 chart toppers, both for charity most memorably ‘Is this the way to Amarillo’ in 2005, although that didn’t feature vocals from Peter, just an appearance on the video.

Right behind is Snoop Dogg’s ‘Sweat’, jumping 4 places up to number 12. Could it continue to climb next week and becomes his 8th top 10 success?

There’s good news for Noah and the Whale, it’s been a slow progression but it seems that ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N’ could indeed go on to become their 2nd top 10 hit, this week it climbs 6 places to another new peak of number 14 in its 9th charting week.

One of last week’s new arrivals making upward progress is Mann and 50 Cent’s ‘Buzzin’, up 9 places to number 15, now making it Mann’s first top 20 hit and 50 Cent’s 15th.

Tiesto and Diplo’s ‘C’mon’ continues to loiter around the bottom half of the top 20, this week rising back up 2 places to number 16 in its 5th charting week, now 2 places shy of its number 13 peak it hit 3 weeks ago.

Just inside the top 20 is yet another big climber; in its 2nd charting week Kanye West, Drake and Rihanna’s ‘All of the lights’ is jumping 13 places up the chart to number 19. In the process it become Kanye’s 16th ,Drake’s 2nd and Rihanna’s 23rd top 20 hit. And as if that wasn’t enough, Kanye has another chart hit, his duet with Katy Perry, ‘E.T’ debuts at 29 bringing his UK Top 40 hit count up to 24. Good news also for Rihanna fans, she has 4 simultaneous hits yet again as former chart topper ‘Only girl’ re-enters at 38, clocking up a 21st charting week, ‘Who’s that chick’ clocks up a 17th charting week at 28 and ‘S&M’ spends an 8th week in the chart at number 6

This week’s second-highest new entry belongs to US Electro-poppers LMFAO; their 3rd UK Top 40 hit ‘Party rock anthem’ debuts at 21. They were last in the countdown alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis and Fergie on chart topper ‘Gettin’ over you’ in June last year.

The cast of Glee are back in the chart once again; at 23 is the birth of their 16th UK Top 40 hit; a combination of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ which peaked at 10 in 1983 and 12 in 2007 and The Yeah yeah yeah’s ‘Heads will roll’ which has not charted in the UK top 40, but resides at 89 this week through exposure of this new version.

One of last week’s new entries not faring well however is Parade’s ‘Louder’, after a number 10 debut, it plummets 15 places to 25.

Just below is another climber, Birdy’s ‘Skinny love’ is up 2 places at 27 its 3rd charting week, but still yet to climb any higher than number 25.

At 29 is the arrival of a 10th hit for Katy Perry and Kanye West (as mentioned above) entitled ‘E.T’ and re-entering at 38 is Katy’s ‘Firework’ which peaked at number 3 last November; it now clocks up its 22nd week on the countdown

One of last week’s big climbers has stalled, Jermih and 50 Cent’s ‘Down on me’ spends its 3rd charting week as a non-mover at 30.

Just outside the top 30 is the arrival of a third solo hit for US R&B star Cee Lo Green; ‘Bright lights, bigger city’ debuts at 31, arriving just in time to take the place of his former ‘F**k you’ which slides to 39 in its 25th week in the top 40.

Martin Solveig and Dragonette’s ‘Hello’ may have failed to crack the top 10, but its chart longevity continues, this week it moves back up yet again, climbing a place at 35 in its 12th charting week.

As if climbing back to the top wasn’t enough, Adele also has a 10th week in the top 10 with ‘Rolling in the deep’, but that’s not all, her huge hit ‘Make you feel my love’ which has charted on and off since late 2008 climbs back up yet again, rising 1 to 36.

The final climber to report is Enrique Iglesias’ and Ludacris’ former top 10 hit ‘Tonight’, climbing 2 at 37 in its 8th charting week.

What will happen in next week’s countdown – Could Adele hang on to the top spot for a 6th week? If she does it will be the longest stint at the top since Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ in the summer of 2007. She faces competition from potential climbers from Black Eyed Peas, Dr Dre and The Wanted and also some strong competition from new releases including Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On the floor’, Katy B’s ‘Broken record’ and Flo Rida and Akon’s ‘Who dat girl’.

Adele and Nicole Scherzinger swap positions at the top of the singles chart following an excellent performance on Comic Relief nine days ago - making Someone Like You her biggest selling single.

It is the eighth single to return to number one in the 21st century, it sold 82,357 copies last week – 37.13% more Than Nicole Scherzinger’s Don’t Hold Your Breath (60,059) - raising its overall sales to 632,606.

It thus becomes her first to sell platinum (600,000 sales) but the song it overtakes –Make You Feel My Love – should itself reach platinum status in a week or so: it sold 7,665 copies last week, raising its cumulative sales to 593,088.

The Wanted slip to number four with Gold Forever (44,562) sales), being overtaken by Just Can’t Get Enough, which surges 15-3 (45,451 sales) to become Black Eyed Peas’ 10th top three hit. The Wanted nevertheless stay ahead of two other singles issued to benefit Comic Relief: George Michael’s cover of New Order’s True Faith beats a hasty retreat, slumping 27-70 (3,780 sales) but Peter Kay & Susan Boyle’s cover of Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson’s I Know Him So Well debuts at number 11 (25,876 sales), 26 years after the original topped the chart.

Three more songs from Glee Cast debut on the chart, with the medley of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Heads Will Roll performing best (number 23, 13,496 sales). 69 Glee Cast songs have now charted, 24 of them this year.

After spending its first six weeks in the chart meandering around the thirties, Noah & The Whale’s L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N dashed to number 19 last week, and now climbs to number 14 (20,169 sales).

Getting slightly belated heavy airplay support from both Radio One and Radio Two, its rise nevertheless coincides with a second straight drop for parent album, Last Night On Earth, which dips 11-18 (8,525 sales), a fortnight after debuting at number eight.

Overall singles sales are down 4.84% week-on-week at 2,983,233, falling below the 3m mark for only the second time in 2011, and reaching a 15 week low. However, they are 14.43% above same week 2010 sales of 2,607,024.

Adele has smashed enough records in the last few weeks but her phenomenal new album 21 breaks new ground this week, becoming the first album ever to spawn three simultaneous number one radio airplay hits in Europe.

According to the latest Music Control Data, the album’s introductory single Rolling In The Deep is still number one in Austria, Belgium, Greece and Switzerland, but dips to number two in The Netherlands, where another 21 track – Set Fire To The Rain – relieves it at the summit. Meanwhile, Someone Like You returns to the top of the chart domestically, reclaiming pole position from Jessie J’s Price Tag, which slips back to second place.

Albums

Adele tightens her grip at the top of the charts still further this week, with her second album, 21, equalling the record for most consecutive weeks at number one in the 21st century, while Someone Like You returns to the top of the singles chart.

Number one for the ninth consecutive week – matching the 21st century record set by The Beatles’ 1 in 2000/1 – 21 has now topped the chart as many times in a row as any album since 1986, when Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms spent 10 straight weeks at the summit. Selling 156,162 copies last week, 21 raises its 62 day sales tally to 1,496,588.

Following an excellent performance on Comic Relief nine days ago, Someone Like You rebounds 2-1 on the singles chart. The eighth single to return to number one in the 21st century, it sold 82,357 copies last week – 37.13% more Than Nicole Scherzinger’s Don’t Hold Your Breath (60,059) - raising its overall sales to 632,606. It thus becomes Adele’s biggest selling single and is her first to sell platinum (600,000 sales) but the song it overtakes –Make You Feel My Love – should itself reach platinum status in a week or so: it sold 7,665 copies last week, raising its cumulative sales to 593,088.

Meanwhile, Adele’s 2008 debut album, 19, on which Make You Feel My Love appears, continues at number two, with sales last week of 47,158 copies lifting its overall sales to 1,122,823.

Adele’s domination of the album chart is good news for her record company, XL Beggars – but denies one of the company’s other top acts, The Strokes, their second number one. Their fourth album, Angles - on the Rough Trade label; Adele is on sister label XL Recordings - debuts at number three on sales of 35,642 copies. It’s the lowest first week sale for any album by the group, and also ends its run of three straight top two debuts.

The Strokes took advantage of a soft January market to storm to their first number one with third album First Impressions Of Earth in 2006, on sales of 63,046 copies. Their debut Is This It sold 48,393 copies on its first week in the shops in September 2001 to debut at number two while Rooms On Fire managed to sell 76,038 copies on its first frame in November 2003 but also had to settle for second slot behind Dido’s Life For Rent.

In existence since 1977, XL Beggars is the first independent record company ever to occupy all of the top three positions on the album chart simultaneously. The Strokes album will inevitably decline next week but the company has another high profile release today: Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs.

While The Strokes take top debut honours, they are far from being the only new arrivals in the artist album chart’s upper reaches – there are no fewer than eight debuts in the Top 20, an unseasonably high tally, and the highest for 18 weeks.

Much in evidence on TV last week – with appearances on BBC Breakfast, This Morning, Celebrity Juice and even QVC – Ronan Keating boosted the fortunes of his new album, When Ronan Met Burt, a collaboration with Burt Bacharach.

Handily placed to make an upwards lurch next week – Keating is a perennial Mother’s Day favourite, and has more TV dates pencilled in – the album debuts at number five (24,821 sales). It’s Keating’s 13th Top 10 album, including seven with Boyzone.

Nicole Scherzinger’s first solo album Killer Love debuts at number eight (19,743 sales), as third single Don’t Hold Your Breath slips 1-2 (60.059 sales).

Set to topple Adele in America next week, where it will be his first number one album, Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. makes a less lofty debut here, arriving at number 10 (18,509 sales) – but it’s a massive improvement on his last album, Graffiti. Released in the wake of domestic abuse allegations about his relationship with Rihanna, and up against a strong slate of Christmas releases, Graffitti climbed no higher than number 55 in December 2009.

Just missing out on his first Top 10 appearance, Joe Bonamassa debuts at number 12 (16,004 sales) with Dust Bowl. The 32 year old blues guitarist’s 12th album, it features Vince Gill, Glenn Hughes and John Hiatt, and provides Bonamassa with a new chart peak for the fifth year/album in a row, culminating a run which started when Sloe Gin reached number 50 in 2007, followed by Live From Nowhere In Particular (number 45, 2008), The Ballad Of John Henry (number 26, 2009) and Black Rock (number 14, 2010).

Also debuting inside the Top 20, Awesome As F**k is a live album by Green Day, which debuts at number 14 (14,398 sales), while Up On The Roof: The Very Best Of The Drifters arrives at number 17 (10,428 sales), and Duran Duran secure the 13th Top 20 album of their 30 year career, with All You Need Is Now racing to a number 11 debut (16,160 sales) after their One Night Only showcase on ITV last Sunday (20th) drew an audience of 3.92m.

The band’s compilation Greatest, is also a beneficiary. After initially peaking at number 15 in 1998, the album climbed as high as number four in 2004, and jumps 148-37 this week. It moves ever closer to becoming the band’s first UK million seller, with the 5,077 copies it sold last week lifting its cumulative sales to 969,241.

Without a TV special to boost them, fellow 1980s giants The Human League also return with a new album. Entitled Credo, it’s their first since 2001, and debuts at number 44 (3,990 sales).

Despite the big new intake, album sales overall climbed only 3.62% week-on-week to 1,852,672 – 0.46% below same week 2010 sales of 1,861,331.
