TITANIC: THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER TOLD
Please take note of how I said "greatest" and not "best" - in my opinion, there is a huge difference. To show you this difference, I will draw a simple comparison to wrestling; in wrestling, one name towers above the rest, a name that has impacted the culture of the world like no other and a name that is instantly recognisable by just about every person on the planet. In his prime, the man was as famous as Michael Jackson, circa 1985. I'm talking of Hulk Hogan, the man who I would term the "greatest" sports entertainment figure of all-time. Bret Hart was ahead of his time; as a professional wrestler, and mat technician, he had and has no equals. Technically, he is in my opinion the "best" wrestler of all-time. However, his popularity, fame, cultural impact, fortune, and track record doesn't compare with that of Hulk Hogan's, hence the distinction I make so apparent, between "greatest" and "best".
I don't think anybody would ever be able to support the argument that Titanic is the "best" movie of all-time; there are better film scripts out there, movies with superior acting and direction, and movies with more cohesion and sense. However, I'm not sure that there has ever been a movie that has quite changed the face of cinema, and more importantly the face of the 'disaster' genre, like Titanic did - certainly not in my lifetime anyway. The movie is revolutionary - what Hulk Hogan did for sports entertainment, Titanic did for movies/cinema. The same reaction and hysteria that was seen surrounding megastars like Michael Jackson during his peak was also seen around Titanic, during its 1997 release - the film was and continues to be that big. For 12 years, it was the most successful movie of all-time, it broke down visual barriers, and had a bank busting budget that had the movie not paid off, the studio producing it would've faced near bankruptcy. Never had there been a bigger risk, but never has there been a bigger reward. The movie alone grossed some $1,900,000,000+ worldwide - associated media such as the extremely famous soundtrack/single (Titanic broke the record for highest-selling instrumental record and fastest-selling soundtrack ever), home video sales (which Titanic also broke records for) & other associated merchandise all added hundreds of millions of dollars in sales to the movie. To this day, it continues to be the measuring stick for disaster movies.
Next year, the movie is set to be released in 3D; Titanic is looking to regain its crown.
Taking everything into consideration, do you think Titanic is the greatest movie of all-time? Things to consider:
- Cultural impact
- Success
- What the movie did for its actors/directors
- The plot
- Barriers broken down by the movie
- Acting
In light of all this, feel free to revist arguably the most famous movie scene of all-time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMeQuylffbw)!
