*data about her pre-1990's sales is very scarce. Sony has never once released any indicative data that acknowledges just how much she sold. She released over 15 studio albums prior to 1990, most of them confined to Canada. But most sold at least 50,000 copies and a lot over 200,000. So I've estimated her sales prior to 1990 to be 3,000,000 albums. My estimations however, are quite away of the official release from Sony which states:

"According to Sony Music and IFPI, Celine Dion sold, from 1987 to August 31, 2004, a total of 174,436,400 albums worldwide. The sales of her first twelve albums, in French, recorded before the signing of her Sony contract, in 1987, were not included in this total"

This would mean that she's now at 180milliion+ albums in the world according to Sony. And the biased side in me would love to believe that. However facts speak for themselves, and so I'll stick with the 168million albums sold that the estimations add upto :)

She is the 2nd female, after Britney Spears.

Only four of the top 20 album sellers of the 1990s also rank among the top 20 album sellers so far in the 2000s. The Fab Four is joined by Metallica, Alan Jackson and Celine Dion. Nielsen/SoundScan, which has tracked sales for Billboard since 1991, doesn't carry a list of the top album sellers of the 2000s on its site. But the information is all there, if you know where to look (and can do simple subtraction).

Record companies are the last people you trust when it comes to sales. Or rather they are the last people you check. The best agencies for sales are Soundscan for the US, Music Week for the UK, Oricon for Japan etc.

Don't forget, WW sales are measured in shipments, and not sales. You can believe Mariah has surpassed 200m records, I have no quarrel with that! :)

I told you I'd believe Wayne cause almost everytime labels inflate, more or less, sales of their artist, and I wrote some exemples.

I don't know exeacly how much Mariah has sold during E=MC2/ballad era, maybe 5-6 million in total? So, when the 200 mil claim was out she actually had sold about 192 million records.....

For a complete listing of the artists with the most units certified - according to the RIAA - please check out the RIAA's handy list. While Madonna, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston were the focus of most reader questions, Barbra Streisand leads the RIAA's rankings among women, with Madonna second, Carey third and Houston fourth. Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire, Britney Spears, Linda Ronstadt and Enya round out the top 10 among solo female artists.

And, according to Nielsen SoundScan since 1991, Streisand, the RIAA's leading lady, has sold 20,334,000 albums.

*data about her pre-1990's sales is very scarce. Sony has never once released any indicative data that acknowledges just how much she sold. She released over 15 studio albums prior to 1990, most of them confined to Canada. But most sold at least 50,000 copies and a lot over 200,000. So I've estimated her sales prior to 1990 to be 3,000,000 albums. My estimations however, are quite away of the official release from Sony which states:

"According to Sony Music and IFPI, Celine Dion sold, from 1987 to August 31, 2004, a total of 174,436,400 albums worldwide. The sales of her first twelve albums, in French, recorded before the signing of her Sony contract, in 1987, were not included in this total"

This would mean that she's now at 180milliion+ albums in the world according to Sony. And the biased side in me would love to believe that. However facts speak for themselves, and so I'll stick with the 168million albums sold that the estimations add upto :)

On 95% of the chat shows she featured on during 07/08, she was introduced as 'the biggest-selling female artist of all-time'. I certainly don't think she's a sleeper. Her achievements, particularly with regards to her album sales, are very overstated. And Sony try and include the sales of the Titanic OST in her sales, which would actually take her to 200m albums WW.

Of all three, I think Madonna is the sleeper! I've rarely heard her introduced as the biggest-selling female artist. What lets Celine (and Mariah to a degree) down is their single sales which are comparatively a helluva lot less!!

- The unpublished photographs of the sessions for the cover.

Its really interesting to see such high figures for My Heart Will Go On. Its rarely her highest ranked track on iTunes or Amazon - Because You Loved Me is generally higher for one.

When you add the digital sales of 821,000 to the physical sales of 690,000ish, you get over 1.5m copies. That isn't bad - My Heart Will Go On sold only 690k because it was given a very limited release, so that the OST would sell instead.

Celine Dion is Canada’s hottest selling music video producer at the moment. Dion, who has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, has recently been awarded Platinum, Diamond and Double Diamond certifications on her videos Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert (10,000 copies), La Tournee Modaiale Taking Chances: Le Spectacle (100,000 copies) and Celine: Through The Eyes Of The World (200,000 copies), respectively.

All three of these videos were released at the end of April this year and the certification was awarded for May sales. This should make Celine: Through The Eyes Of The World, one of the fastest selling double diamond certification by a Canadian artist. The documentary–concert film chronicles the life of the Canadian singer during her Taking Chances Tour. It premiered on February 16, 2010 in Miami Florida and was released in theatres as a Hot Ticket special event.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Dion's three DVD releases debuted at the top three on the Music Video Chart in Canada. Celine: Through the Eyes of the World entered at number-one, selling 69,000 copies. Sales of this DVD achieved the second highest one week total for a music DVD, behind Dion's 2007 release, Live in Las Vegas: A New Day.... The concert DVD/CD La Tournee Modaiale Taking Chances: Le Spectacle entered the chart at number-two, selling 31,000 copies, which was then followed by the English version, Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert at number-three with 7,700 copies sold. No other artist since Hilary Duff's home video invasion in 2004, has an artist has held the top three positions on that chart. Duff was certified with a 5X Diamond Sales Award for 500,000 copies of All Access Pass for sales in the month of November 2004.

Here's what I wrote @ the OFFICIAL CELINE DION fan forum:


Radio Two did a countdown of the top-selling UK million sellers, and surprisingly, Celine Dion still has two UK million sellers.

Now I'm not sure if some of you know this but amongst chart analysis geeks like myself, this was big news last year/early this year; back in the 90's, the UK charts were based on panel studies, and sales estimations, as opposed to concrete sales being known (particularly between 94-96). Certain types of multiplyer were used to estimate how many copies a single would sell to get to #1. Anyway, it had always been known that Celine's Think Twice had sold 1,213m copies in the UK. Well that was up until this year, when somebody questioned the multiplyer theory, and it emerged that Celine's Think Twice hadn't actually sold 1.213m copies - it had sold a much less figure of 930,000 copies.

Well that was up until yesterday!! Radio Two announced an OFFICIAL and UPDATED list of the UK best-selling singles, and this is where Celine figured:

[33] MY HEART WILL GO ON - Celine Dion (1998) 1,417,000
[45] THINK TWICE - Celine Dion (1994) 1,265,000

Yes, that would be correct - TWO top 50 positions - the ONLY female soloist to have such a feat. Madonna doesn't have a single UK million seller - neither does Mariah, or Janet, or Leona, or Lady Gaga, or Shania Twain. In fact, amongst female solo artists, only Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and Cher rank above Celine! :o You can see the FULL LIST @ my site Vanity Edge. Nope. Depending on the sources you use, she has two contenders for the title of her "biggest-selling UK single". Crazy For You has sold between 750-825,000 UK copies, with two notable chart runs - one in the 80's, and one in the 90's. Her other contender is Into The Grove which I have estimated @ around 870,000-875,000 UK copies sold (depends on the multipliers and chart methods you use). But its of the two mentioned here, with both comfortably selling over 750,000 copies in the UK - her biggest sellers.

However before casting her off, it is worth noting that she has over 10 500,000+ sellers in the UK, including 3 700,000+ sellers!

Celine/R. Kelly's I'm Your Angel sold 1,417,000 physical singles. Because You Loved Me (my favorite of hers) sold 1,344,000. It's All Coming Back To Me Now sold 1,176,000.

Celine's Power Of Love sold 1,117,000 physical singles. My Heart Will Go On sold 686K. If You Asked Me To sold 413K.

Merry Christmas II You is a sequel to Carey's 1994 album Merry Christmas, which reached #3. That album has sold 5,052,000 copies. Two decades have, in fact, passed since Dion first graced the Hot 100. "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" entered at No. 80 20 years ago this week. The ballad peaked at No. 4 on the March 2, 1991, chart.

Dion had actually first charted on the Adult Contemporary survey the week of Oct. 27, 1990, when her debut U.S. single bowed at No. 41. Since that time, Dion has dominated the AC chart.

Her 39 AC hits since her arrival are the most among all artists, as are her 21 top 10s and 11 No. 1s.

On the Hot 100, Dion has collected 21 entries, 10 of which reached the top 10. Four of her entries rose to No. 1:

"The Power of Love"
1994, four weeks at No. 1

"Because You Loved Me"
1996, six weeks

"My Heart Will Go On"
1998, two weeks

I estimate total sales to date of between 600-650,000, enough for double platinum in hard sales alone. Shouldn't be too far from triple platinum if it continues sales like this. I'd expect about 50k from the coming year, if not more.

"Hold It Against Me" debuts at #1 on this week's Hot 100. This is the second time that Spears has opened atop the chart. She achieved the feat in October 2009 with "3." Spears is only the second artist in the chart's 52-year history to debut at #1 with two or more songs. Mariah Carey has debuted at #1 three times. She scored with "Fantasy" in September 1995, "One Sweet Day" (with Boyz II Men) in December 1995 and "Honey" in September 1997. (What about Celine Dion? See The Fine Print, below.)

The Fine Print: Celine Dion debuted at #1 in February 1998 with "My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme From ‘Titanic')" and did it again that December with "I'm Your Angel" (with R. Kelly). But Billboard doesn't count the second hit as an official #1 debut. Let me explain: The song bowed at #1 the same week that the magazine changed its chart methodology to allow non-singles to enter the chart. Silvio Pietroluongo, the magazine's Director of Charts, explains, "That debuted at No. 1 due to the change in chart rules, not on a proper week to week comparison. The song was ranked in the prior week's test chart." (Billboard is right to be scrupulous about its chart standards, though I'm pretty sure that Dion's small army of devoted fans won't be happy with this.)
