Week Ending Jan. 23, 2011: Beginner's Luck
Posted Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:37am PST by Paul Grein in Chart

Nearly 40 years after he became an A-list rock star (and, for a time, a tabloid mainstay due to his head-turning marriage to Cher), Gregg Allman finally lands his first top 10 solo album on The Billboard 200. Allman achieves the feat as Low Country Blues debuts at #5. Allman's highest-charting solo album before this was Laid Back, which hit #13 in 1973. (You may remember the album's bluesy hit, "Midnight Rider.").

Low Country Blues is Allman's first solo album in 14 years. Grammy winner T Bone Burnett produced the album, which features covers of songs by such blues greats as Muddy Waters and B.B. King. The album enters the Top Blues Albums chart at #1. It dethrones Buddy Guy's Living Proof..

Allman was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, which reached its commercial peak in 1973 when Brothers And Sisters logged five weeks at #1. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995..

The group's biggest hit was the classic single "Ramblin' Man." That song peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 in October 1973, right behind Cher's "Half-Breed." Two years later, Allman and Cher were married. For sheer unexpectedness, the marriage rivaled the brief Julia Roberts/Lyle Lovett union of the early '90s..

Admit it: You were checking to see if the record for the lowest sales tally for an album at #1 was broken for the third week in a row. To the great relief of the beleaguered music industry, it wasn't. The Decemberists' The King Is Dead debuts at #1 with sales of 94,000. That's a big improvement over last week, when Cake's Showroom Of Compassion topped the chart with a record-setting low tally of 44,000..

Showroom Of Compassion tumbles from #1 to #25 in its second week. Only one album in chart history has ever taken a bigger drop from the top spot. Incubus' Light Grenades dove from #1 to #37 on Dec. 10, 2006. After two weeks, Cake's album has sold just 59K copies. Cake always wanted to make the pop history books in the worst way. I think they just did..

The King Is Dead is the first top 10 album for the Decemberists, an alternative-leaning band from Oregon. Digital sales accounted for 65% of this week's total. That's the highest digital percentage for an album at #1 since Lil Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being topped the chart in October when there was no CD in the marketplace. (This is the highest digital percentage for an album where there was a CD in the marketplace since Sara Bareilles' Kaleidoscope Heart hit #1 in September with a 66% digital share.).

Two other rock bands, The Script and Social Distortion, also land their first top 10 albums this week. The Script's new album was #1 in the U.K. for two weeks last fall..

Bruno Mars' "Grenade" returns to #1 on Hot Digital Songs, bumping off Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," which falls to #3. "Grenade" sold 204,000 copies, down just 7% from last week. "Hold It Against Me" sold 183,000 copies, down 55% from last week. Which song will be #1 when the Hot 100 is finalized later today? Check back in a few hours and see..

Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans logs its fifth week in the top 10 on The Billboard 200. The album debuted at #3 in October, fell as low as #50 in November and has rallied on the strength of the transatlantic #1 hits "Just The Way You Are" and "Grenade." Mars' credibility was also boosted last month when he received seven Grammy nominations, including such high-profile categories as Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Producer of the Year..

Doo-Wops & Hooligans enters the Official U.K. Albums chart at #1. This marks the first time that the debut album by an American artist has hit #1 in the U.K. since Lady Gaga's The Fame scored in April 2009. Oddly, neither of these albums has reached #1 in the U.S. The Fame peaked at #2 here. Doo-Wops has climbed as high as #3. (The Fine Print: I'm not counting Brandon Flowers' solo debut album Flamingo, which topped the U.K. chart in September. Flowers had previously amassed four hit albums on both side of the Atlantic fronting the Killers.).

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums:

1. The Decemberists, The King Is Dead, 94,000. This new entry is the band's first top 10 album. The band's 2009 album The Hazards Of Love peaked at #14. It has sold 162,000 copies..

2. Kidz Bop Kidz, Kidz Bop 19, 70,000. This new entry is the 12th installment in this long-running series to make the top 10. By reaching #2, it ties Kidz Bop 9 as the highest-charting installment in the series..

3. The Script, Science & Faith, 49,000. This new entry is the band's first top 10 album. The band's 2009 album The Script peaked at #64. It has sold 339,000 copies. Two songs from the new album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "For The First Time" vaults from #90 to #34. "Nothing" debuts at #134.

4. Social Distortion, Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes, 46,000. This new entry is the veteran band's first top 10 album. Its highest charting album before this was White Light White Heat White Trash, which hit #27 in 1996..

5. Gregg Allman, Low Country Blues, 36,000. This new entry is Allman's first solo album to make the top 10. The Allman Brothers Band made the top 10 with four albums in the '70s. Three of them made the top five: the double live Eat A Peach (#4 in 1972), Brothers And Sisters (#1 in 1973) and Win, Lose Or Draw (#5 in 1975)..

6. Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, 34,000. The album drops from #4 to #6 in its 16th week. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Grenade," which logs its fifth week at #1..

7. Katy Perry, Teenage Dream, 33,000. The former #1 album rebounds from #13 to #7 in its 22nd week. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Firework," which dips from #4 to #5..

8. Taylor Swift, Speak Now, 31,000. The former #1 album drops from #3 to #8 in its 13th week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Back To December" jumps from #30 to #28. "Mine" drops from #78 to #93..

9. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday, 28,000. The album drops from #5 to #9 in its ninth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Moment 4 Life," which jumps from #49 to #42..

10. Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More, 27,000. The album dips from #9 to #10 in its 44th week. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Little Lion Man" jumps from #72 to #71. "Cave" jumps from #139 to #115.

Six albums drop out of the top 10 this week. As noted above, Cake's Showroom Of Compassion falls from #1 to #25. Cage The Elephant's Thank You Happy Birthday drops from #2 to #28. The Country Strong soundtrack drops from #6 to #14. Steel Magnolia's Steel Magnolia drops from #7 to #33. Rihanna's Loud drops from #8 to #12. Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy drops from #10 to #16..

James Blunt's Some Kind Of Trouble debuts at #11. This just missed becoming Blunt's third top 10 album in a row. Back To Bedlam hit #2 in 2006. All The Lost Souls hit #7 in 2007. "Stay The Night" re-enters Hot Digital Songs at #78..

Country Strong is the #1 soundtrack for the second week "Coming Home," sung by Gwyneth Paltrow in the movie, was nominated yesterday for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. It faces "I See The Light" from Tangled, "If I Rise" from 127 Hours and "We Belong Together" from Toy Story 3. The Country Strong soundtrack has sold 122K copies..

The soundtrack to The Social Network rebounds from #72 to #49. The score brought Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. The album has climbed as high as #20 and has sold 78K copies. It is competing against the scores to Inception, The King's Speech, 127 Hours and How To Train Your Dragon..

Journey's Journey's Greatest Hits returns to #1 on the Top Catalog Albums chart. It's the album's eighth week at #1; its first since August. On The Billboard 200, the album jumps from #78 to #55. The album peaked at #10 on that chart in February 1989. The album's prime attraction is "Don't Stop Believin'," which has sold 4,262,000 copies, which makes it the 23rd best-selling song of the digital era.

Green Day's 2004 album American Idiot tops the 6 million mark in sales this week. The album won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. It spawned two top 10 hits: "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends." Most impressively, it inspired a Broadway show. This is Green Day's second best-selling album. Dookie, from 1994, has sold 8,048,000 copies..

Lady Gaga's The Fame tops the 4 million mark in sales this week. It's the first debut album to reach that milestone since Taylor Swift's eponymous 2006 debut, which has sold 4,955,000 copies. The Fame never quite reached #1. It peaked at #2 in the last chart week of 2009, behind Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream. Gaga gets a little bit of revenge this week: She reached 4M before Boyle. I Dreamed A Dream has sold 3,974,000 copies..

Michael Buble's Crazy Love tops the 2 million mark in sales this week. All four of Buble's studio albums have reached this milestone. Michael Buble has sold 2,540,000. It's Time has sold 3,533,000. Call Me Irresponsible has sold 2,244,000. (The latter two tallies count minor editions)

No Strings Attached was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The rom-com about two people who attempt to have a "friends with benefits" relationship co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. The movie's title, of course, is the same as that of *NSYNC's 2000 blockbuster. In an improbable twist, that boy band's most famous member, Justin Timberlake, will co-star this summer in a very similar movie which will actually be titled Friends With Benefits. In another unlikely twist, Timberlake's co-star will be Mila Kunis, who co-starred with Kutcher for eight seasons in That ‘70s Show. What are the odds?.

Coming Attractions: Grammy Nominees 2011 and Wisin y Yandel's Los Vaqueros: El Regreso both have a shot at debuting at #1 next week. Also due: Iron & Wine's Kiss Each Other Clean, Amos Lee's Mission Bell and Cold War Kids' Mine Is Yours

Great to see two albums above 70k. WOW @ Britney's decline haha. Bruno is so gonna slay this year

It fell even harder than "3", which I wasn't expecting because of HIAM's much higher airplay.

Do you think there are other songs on Bruno's album that have #1 potential?

Lol, I probably wasn't thinking when I wrote that; his album is majorly underperforming (in proportion to his massive singles). I'm not properly acquainted with the album to decide whether it has another #1 in it. But I'd like to think so (his new UK single definitely has #1 potential - Count On Me).
