Brett Bradley-Howarth’s UK Top 40 Analysis:
Records are leaving the chart this week, including Gary and Robbie’s ‘Shame’ (ending its second run), James Blunt’s ‘Stay the night’ and Katy Perry’s number 2 hit ‘Teenage dream’ which departs after a 12 week run. These pave the way for 7 new entries and 3 re-entries, 6 records are climbing, 18 are sliding and there are 2 non-movers.

From one charity record to another at the top of this week’s chart; JLS’s Children in Need single ‘Love you more’ is down 2 places to number 3 after just a week in control, replaced by The X Factor Finalists’ cover of David Bowie‘s Heroes’ which only peaked at number 24 during an 8 week chart run in 1977.
The number 2 record is a chart climber; after leaping up to number 3 last week, this week Ellie Goulding’s ‘Your song’ is up a place to a new peak in the runner up position, now beating the highest charting Elton John version of the song by 2 places.
This weeks second-highest new entry arrives at number 4, ‘Thinking of me’, courtesy of UK pop singer Olly Murs. It’s his second hit, the first being his number 1 debut single ‘Please don’t let me go’ which, incidentally is a re-entry on this weeks countdown, returning to the chart at number 39, clocking up a 10th week inside the top 40.
Returning to the top 10 is Adele’s chart yo-yo ‘Make you feel my love’; it’s up 3 places at number 9. The song now clocks up its 12th week inside the top 40, more than 2 years after its original release. The peak of the song to date is number 4, but let’s not rule out the possibility of it beating that, it is a rather unpredictable record after all.
‘Only girl’ may be slowly heading down the chart, but Rihanna’s collaboration with Drake ‘What’s my name?’ is set to become another big hit, last week it debuted at 18, it’s now up 8 places at a new peak of number 10 and thus becomes Rihanna’s 15th UK Top 10 hit and Drake’s first.
Moving down the top 10 this week is Take That’s ‘The flood’ which slips 4 places to number 6 after a fortnight at number 2. After a number 6 debut last week, this week Far East Movement’s ‘Like a G6’ is also sliding, spending its 2nd charting week 1 place below at number 7. After climbing to a number 7 peak last week, this week Black Eyed Peas’ ‘The time’ looks as though it may have peaked, dipping back 4 places to number 11. It seems almost certain that Westlife’s ‘Safe’ is to be their poorest performing single, after a number 10 debut last week, this week it’s down 11 places at 21. Also struggling is Tinchy Stryder’s collaboration with Chipmunk ‘Game over’, after debuting at number 22 last week, this week it dips to number 27. It seems 22 could be an unlucky number for Tinchy, having peaked there with his last hit ‘Second chance’ earlier this month.
Climbing just outside the top 10 is former number 1 hit ‘F**k you’ by Cee Lo Green; it’s now in its 8th charting week (2 of which were spent at the top) and is rebounding 3 places to number 12.
5 of this week’s climbers are former number 1 hits; one of which is Tinie Tempah and Eric Turner’s ‘Written in the stars’ which heads back up 3 places in its 9th charting week, to number 23. The 5 former number 1’s are detailed below.
UK singer Jessie J makes her chart debut this week, ‘Do it like a dude’ is a new entry at number 25. Just below is another UK artist making his chart debut; Brett Domino’s ‘Gillian McKeith’ is debuting at 29.
There’s good news for Taio Cruz this week, as former number 1 hit ‘Dynamite’ clocks up its 14th charting week, it’s a climber, heading back up 4 places at number 32.
Olly Murs isn’t the only act with a re-entry this week, also re-entering is The Wanted’s ‘All time low’, having only been absent from the chart for one week, this week returning at number 34 and clocking up a 17th charting week; their latest hit however isn’t performing as well, having peaked at 2 and down to number 31 in only its 6th charting week.
Just below is the arrival of a 17th UK Top 40 hit for US R&B star Usher; ‘More’ is debuting at 33 and follows up ‘DJ got us falling in love’ which departed the chart just a week ago having spent 17 weeks on the countdown with a number 7 peak. He’s notched up 4 number 1 hits in his career, most recently ‘OMG’ which climbed to the top in April of this year.
Not far behind is another new entry, ‘Doncamatic’ marks the return of alternative rock animated characters the Gorillaz. It’s debuting at number 37 and is their first UK Top 40 hit since ‘Kids with guns’ peaked at 27 in April of 2006. It’s their 9th hit in total, the biggest being their only number 1, ‘Dare’ in September of 2005.
The Beatles have another hit returning to the chart; ‘Let it be’ which originally peaked at number 2 in 1970 is back at number 38. It’s the second Beatles song to return to the top 40 as a result of their back catalogue being made available digitally, the other being ‘Hey Jude’ which re-entered the chart last week.
The final new entry of the week lands at number 40, the birth of a 46th UK Top 40 hit for Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue entitled ‘Better than today’. She was last in the chart with ‘Get outta my way’ which peaked at 12 in October. Kylie’s biggest hits include her 7 number 1’s, however she hasn’t hit the top in 7 years, her last number 1 hit being ‘Slow’ in November 2003.
What are the 5 former number 1 hits climbing this week? Cee Lo Green’s ‘F**k you’, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Written in the stars’, The Wanted’s ‘All time low’ (re-entering from last weeks 42), Olly Murs’ ‘Please don’t let me go’ (re-entering from last weeks 68) and Taio Cruz’s ‘Dynamite’.
Next week...
