There’s no change at the top of the UK Chart, Cee Lo Green’s ‘F**k you’ is now the years 11th song to spend more than a week as the UK’s number 1 hit, and he’s done it in spite of some strong competition. It does of course however have a long way to go to beat his only previous number 1, ‘Crazy’ as part of Gnarls Barkley which spent 9 consecutive weeks at number 1 in the spring of 2006 and became the UK’s first download-only chart topper (but was released physically after hitting number 1).
There’s good news for Bruno Mars this week as he has 2 climbers; his former number 1 hit ‘Just the way you are’ is up 2 places at number 2, now clocking up its 4th week inside the top 5, and his former top 3 collaboration with Travie McCoy ‘Billionaire’ is continuing its climb back up, rising 4 places to number 11 after jumping back into the top 20 last week.
This week’s highest new entry lands at number 3, ‘Barbra Streisand’ by US disco house group Duck Sauce, an act which includes Armand Van Helden who has himself had 12 UK Top 40 hits including 2 number 1’s. ‘Barbra Streisand’ is the 2nd UK hit under the name of Duck Sauce and already the biggest by far, their first hit being ‘Anyway’ which peaked at 22 just under a year ago. ‘Barbra Streisand’ has already been a top 20 hit in Australia and New Zealand.
Tinie Tempah’s former number 1 ‘Written in the stars’ may be slipping down, this week down 2 at 5, but his latest offering ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ (his collaboration with Swedish House Mafia) is climbing to a new peak in its 2nd charting week, rising 1 place to number 4.
This week’s second-highest new entry belongs to last year’s X Factor winner Joe McElderry. ‘Ambitions’ is his 2nd hit, landing at number 6, following up ‘The climb’ which was the final number 1 hit of 2009.
One of last week’s new arrivals is leaping in to the top 10; Mike Posner made his chart debut at 22 7 days ago with ‘Cooler than me’, this week it’s up 13 places to number 9.
There’s 2 reasons for Usher to smile this week, first and foremost is that ‘DJ got us falling in love’ has climbed back in to the top 10, this week rising 8 places to number 10. The track has been yo-yoing around the chart for 13 weeks now with little consistency. It’s chart peak to date is number 7 which it reached 4 weeks ago. The track has peaked higher in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, in each of which it has cracked the top 5. The other piece of good news for Usher is that he has a re-entry; former number 1 collaboration with Will I Am, ‘OMG’ is back in the chart at number 35. It’s now clocking up its 22nd week inside the UK Top 40 having been absent from the chart for 8 weeks.
Moving down the top 10 are Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams, ‘Shine’ is down 5 places at 7 after a number 2 debut last week. Also falling for the first time is Kings of Leon’s ‘Radioactive’, dipping 7 at 14.
There are more new arrivals to report; The next new entry is just outside the top 10, a 6th Top 40 hit for UK singer/song-writer and now actress Pixie Lott; ‘Broken arrow’ is straight in at number 12, following up ‘Turn it up’ which peaked at 11 in June. Her biggest hits to date are of course her number 1 successes ‘Mama do’ and ‘Boys and girls’ in 2009. Canadian singer Michael Buble is back with ‘Hollywood’, the 6th UK Top 40 hit of his career debuting at number 17. He was last in the chart with ‘Haven’t met you yet’ which peaked at number 5 exactly a year ago and is by far the biggest hit of his career. Also returning this week are the UK indie pop group The Ting Tings. ‘Hands’ is debuting at number 29, it’s their first UK Top 40 hit since ‘Be the one’ peaked at 28 exactly 2 years ago. They missed out on the top 40 with their last single ‘We walk’ which only peaked at 58 in March 2009.
Climbing once again, but once again missing the top 20 is the latest offering from The Saturdays; ‘Higher’ is up 2 places and back at its peak to date of number 22, now clocking up its 4th week inside the top 30. There are 2 weeks to go before the new version of the song featuring Flo Rida hits the stores.
Bruno’s isn’t the only former number 1 moving back up; after being stuck at number 27 for 3 consecutive weeks, this week B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ is up 2 places at number 25. The song’s now in its 20th charting week and hit the top 13 weeks ago. And as if that wasn’t enough, B.o.B’s new single has arrived in the top 40, ‘Magic’, which features lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter of US alternative rock band Weezer, who have had 8 UK Top 40 hits since debuting in 1995, most memorably ‘Buddy Holly’ which peaked at 12 in 1995 and their biggest hit, ‘Beverly Hills’ which reached number 9 in 2005. Can ‘Magic’ climb in the coming weeks and give B.o.B a 3rd number 1 hit out of 3? It’s already reached the top 10 in the USA, New Zealand and Australia.
Usher’s not the only artist with a re-entry this week; thanks to X Factor performances another classic is back in the Top 40. At number 26 is Michael Andrews and Gary Jules’ version of Tears for Fears’ ‘Mad world’. Michael and Gary’s version had a 3 week run at number 1 beginning Christmas 2003; this week it clocks up its 12th charting week.
In the bottom half of the top 40, the other songs sliding for the first time this week are Magnetic Man and Katy B’s ‘Perfect stranger’, dipping 8 at 24 and Professor Green’s ‘Monster’ dipping 8 at 37. With both of these in just their 2nd charting week, both are currently the smallest top 40 hits of the artist’s careers to date.
Next week ...
Duck Sauce could climb to the top as ‘Barbra Streisand’ is now available physically, also battling to climb to the top spot will be this week’s biggest climber, ‘Cooler than me’ by Mike Posner, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ and Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’. They will however have to fight off strong competition from other new releases which are expected to debut in the top 40 next week, these are The Wanted’s ‘Heart vacancy’, Skepta & Preeya Kalidas’ Cross My Heart, Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’, Jay Sean’s download only ‘2012’, Ndubz’ ‘Best behaviour’ and Travie McCoy’s ‘We’ll be alright’.
