The UK has a new number 1 hit; UK rapper Tinie Tempah’s 3rd hit ‘Written in the stars’ is straight in at the top, knocking Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’ down to number 2 after just a week on top. It’s Tinie’s 2nd UK number 1 hit, having hit the top with his debut single ‘Pass out’ in March. He was last in the chart with a collaboration with UK fellow hip-hop star Labrinth with ‘Frisky’ which peaked at number 2 in June. Speaking of Labrinth, he has this weeks 2nd highest new entry, ‘Let the sun shine’ is his 2nd chart success following up ‘Frisky’ and it’s straight in at number 3.
This weeks highest re-entry belongs to UK singer/song writer Adele. ‘Make you feel my love’ originally peaked at number 26 in November of 2008; it returned in early September of this year as a result of exposure on X Factor and slightly improved on its peak, landing at 24. This week it betters that position considerably, re-entering at number 4. This now makes ‘Make you feel my love’ her 4th hit out of 4 to reach the top 20 and instead of being her smallest hit, it’s now her 2nd biggest, beaten only by ‘Chasing pavements’ which peaked at number 2 in January of 2008.
Moving down this week is Taio Cruz’s former chart topper ‘Dynamite’, after 2 weeks at number 2 and a total of 5 consecutive weeks in the top 3, this week it’s down to number5, and moving down is Script’s ‘For the first time’ dipping to number 7 this week after a fortnight at its number 4 peak.
Also dipping this week is Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love the way you lie’, the years best selling single to date is out of the top 10 after a 14 week run and 4 weeks at its number 2 peak, this week it’s down 5 places at number11. Alex Gaudino’s ‘I’m in love’ is down 9 places to number 19 after only 1 week in the top 10, now almost certain not to beat his biggest hit which is set to remain as his number 4 hit ‘Destination Calabria’ from March 2007. After only a week in the chart The Saturdays’ ‘Higher’ is failing to live up to its name, this week down 3 places at number 25. This could rectify itself in the near future however as a new version of the track featuring Flo Rida is set for release on November 1st. Another track falling in its 2nd charting week is Charice’s ‘Pyramid’, down 20 places at number 37.
It’s not all doom and gloom however, there’s good news for Enrique Iglesias and Nicole Scherzinger; their collaboration ‘Heartbeat’ is up 5 places to a new peak of number 8 on only its 2nd charting week. It’s now Enrique’s 8th top 10 hit and Nicole’s 3rd top 10 hit outside of the Pussycat Dolls. It does have a long way to go however to become Nicole’s biggest non Pussycat Dolls hit, that’s still ‘Jai ho’ which peaked at number 3 in March 2009.
Also climbing is Eliza Doolittle’s ‘Pack up’; continuing its journey back up the chart, after returning to the top 20 last week, this week it’s up another 3 places to number 15. The peak of this track to date is number 5 which it climbed to in August, it’s now spending its 13th week inside the top 30.
Another of last weeks new entries making progress is Mark Ronson and The Business International’s ‘Bike song’, it’s up 4 places at number 17. The track is now Mark’s 6th top 20 hit and 2nd under the guise of Mark Ronson and The Business International. It has a long way to go to become Marks biggest hit however as he scored 2 number 2 hits in 2007, ‘Stop me’ and ‘Valerie’.
Climbing back up again this week is The Wanted’s ‘All time low’ now further proving they are not victims of the high debut and short chart run typical of boy bands. The track’s up 1 place this week at number 22, having peaked at number 1 10 weeks ago.
There are more new arrivals to report: just outside the top 10 is the arrival of a 45th UK Top 40 hit for Aussie superstar Kylie Minogue. ‘Get outta my way’ is new at number 12. Kylie was last in the chart with ‘All the lovers’ which peaked at 3 in July. Her biggest hits to date are of course her 7 number 1’s, however she hasn’t hit the top in almost 7 years, her last chart topper being ‘Slow’ in November of 2003.
There’s good news this week for UK indie group The Wombats; after a chart absence of almost 2 and and a half years, during which time they’ve had 3 singles fail to penetrate the top 40, this week they are finally back in the top 40. ‘Tokyo’ is the bands 5th UK Top 40 hit, debuting at number 23. Their last chart hit (by the skin of its teeth) was ‘Backfire at the disco’ which peaked at 40 in May 2008; their biggest hits to date are ‘Moving to New York’ which peaked at 13 in January 2008 and ‘Let’s dance to joy division’ a number 15 hit in October 2007.
At 26 is a chart debut for a little known London rap group L27, the track is entitled 'This little light'.
There's a re-release charting this week, at number 31 is the arrival of a new version of UK rock band Status Quo’s ‘In the army now’ which originally reached number 2 in November of 1986. It’s the bands 57th UK Top 40 hit and the biggest since ‘All that counts is love’ peaked at 29 in November 2005. They were last in the chart in December 2008 when ‘It’s Christmas time’ peaked at 40. The bands biggest hit was their only number 1 single ‘Down down’ in January 1975.
L27 aren't the only act making a UK Top 40 debut this week, at 36 is DJ Danny Byrd's 'Ill behaviour'. It isn't Danny's first single however, he has graced the UK Top 75 before when 'Sweet harmony' peaked at 64 in February.
Re-entering at number 38 is Greg Street’s debut hit ‘Turn my swag on’ after a chart absence of just 1 week, having peaked at 17 last month.
Another act returning to the chart following a long absence is Scottish singer, songwriter KT Tunstall. ‘Wierdo’ is a new entry at number39. It’s her 6th UK Top 40 hit to date and first since ‘Hold on’ peaked at 21 in September of 2007. Her biggest hit to date is ‘Suddenly I see’ which spent 10 weeks in the top 40 from September 2005 and peaked at 12.
Next week...
There are some significant new releases this week which could enter high in next weeks countdown, including Cee Lo Green’s ‘F**k You’, Gary Barlow & Robbie Williams’ ‘Shame’, Professor Green's 'Monster', Magnetic Man and Katy B’s ‘Perfect Stranger’, Swedish House Mafia & Tinie Tempah’s download only ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’, Kings Of Leon’s ‘Radioactive’ and Plan B’s ‘The Recluse’.
