After an 18 week chart run, Edward Maya's top 5 hit 'Stereo love' has finally departed the chart, dipping 6 at 43; We can pretty safely say that Jason Derulo's 'What if' is to be his smallest hit having only peaked at number 12, this week it's gone after a 9 week run, also out are Chase and Status' 'Let you go', Inna's 'Amazing, Linkin Park's 'Catalyst',Pepper and Piano's 'You took my heart' and Aggro Santos' 'Saint or sinner'. There's no change at the top this week; Alexandra Burke and Laza Morgan are holding on to the number 1 spot for a 2nd week with 'Start without you'. Surprisingly the biggest threat was in fact Taio Cruz's former number 1 hit 'Dynamite' which is climbing back up a place at number 2 and clocking up its 4th week inside the top 3.

It seems it wasn't to be for Katy Perry, as after 2 weeks at number 2, this week 'Teenage dream' is down a place at 3.

It's a double celebration for The Script in the new chart; after debuting at 5 last week, this week 'For the first time' is up 1 at a new peak of number 4. If you cast your eyes down to the bottom end of the chart, you'll also see a re-entry at number 35 for 'The man who can't be moved' which is (to date) the biggest hit of their career. It originally peaked at number 2 in late 2008 and this week it clocks up its 21st week inside the top 40.

There are more climbers just outside the top 5; at 6 is Eminem and Rihanna's former number 2 hit 'Love the way you lie', this week clocking up its 13th week inside the top 10 and it's back up a place at 6. Just below is Usher and Pitbull's 'DJ got us falling in love again', which, after an extremely slow start has finally penetrated the top 10; this week rising 7 places to a new peak of number 7 after 8 weeks of loitering around the bottom half of the top 25. 'DJ got us falling in love' is now Usher's 12th top 10 hit and Pitbull's 5th.

There's a clutch of non-movers circling the bottom of the top 10: at number 8 for a 3rd consecutive week is Katy B's 'Katy on a mission', at 9 is Flo Rida and David Guetta's former number 1 hit 'Club can't handle me' in it's 8th charting week, at 11 is Yolanda Be Cool's former number 1 hit 'We no speak Americano' in its 11th charting week, and not moving at 12 is Brandon Flower's former top 10 hit 'Crossfire'. Further down the chart, Swedish House Mafia's 'One' has stalled at 19.

This weeks highest new entry belongs to Barbados born R&B star Shontelle. The track entitled 'Impossible' has landed straight in to the top 10, by the skin of it's teeth at number 10. It's Shontelle's first chart appearance since 'Stuck with each other' peaked at 23 in April of 2009. 'Impossible' is Shontelle's 2nd top 10 hit, the previous being 'T Shirt' which peaked at 6 in January of last year.

McFly's 'Party girl' is continuing the boyband trend (in particular theirs) of debuting high and plummeting quickly down the chart as it dips 7 places this week to 13 after debuting at 6 last week. Right behind them however are The Wanted who break this tradition with former number 1 hit 'All time low' which is up 10 places from its all time low position of 24 to this weeks 14, it now clocks up its 8th charting week.

Continuing to move slowly up the chart is Ke$ha's 'Take it off'. The song is continuing to rise as it has consistantly for 4 weeks, this week up 3 to a new peak of number 15.

The greatest gainer of the week is Enrique and Pitbull's 'I like it'; the song has been around for 12 weeks and peaked at number 4, just when it seemed to be heading out of the chart, this week it's up 14 places and back into the top 20 at number 20. Also moving back up is Ne-Yo's former number 1 hit 'Beautiful monster', rising 2 places at 21 on its 7th charting week and up 2 at 24 is The Saturdays' former top 3 hit 'Missing you'.

Another hit continuing to climb slowly but surely is Stromae's 'Alors on danse', now consistantly climbing for a month, this week it's up 2 to a new peak of number 25.

There's good news this week for DJ Fresh; 'Gold dust' is climbing again, this week rising 4 places to number 26. Is this to be another 'Breakeven' or 'Amazed' and be destined to have a seemingly endless run in the top 40 without penetraing the top 20? So far it has loitered around between number 24 and number 30 for 7 weeks and counting.

The Script aren't the only act with 2 reasons to celebrate this week; at 27 is a new entry for UK garage star Example. The track entitled 'Last ones standing' is his 4th UK hit to date. The other good news for he and his fans is that his previous hit 'Kickstarts' is rising back up the chart, rising 2 at 33 in its 14th charting week. 'Kickstarts' peaked at number 3 in June and is his biggest hit to date.

One place down there's another new entry, a 34 UK Top 40 hit for Welsh rockers The Manic Street Preachers. The new hit entitled '(It's not war) just the end of love' is debuting at 28. Their biggest hit to date are their 2 chart toppers, 'If you tolerate this your children will be next' in 1998 and limited edition release 'The masses against the classes' in 2000.

Just below is another new arrival, 'Misery', a 9th UK Top 40 hit for US rockers Maroon 5. The track is debuting at number 30 and is their first UK hit since 'If I ever see your face again' spent 6 weeks in the top 40 in the summer of 2008 and only peaked at 28. Their biggest hit to date is 'Makes me wonder' which climbed as high as number 2 in 2007.

After a belated new entry at 39 last week The XX's first hit 'Islands' is creeping up the chart, this week rising 5 places to a new peak of number 34.

The latest chart offering from Sky 1's Must be the music is a debut hit for Missing Andy ;the track entitled 'Sing for the deaf' is new at 36. Emma's Imagination's 'This day' is clocking up a 2nd charting week, but is sliding 21 places at 31.

Just below is another chart debut, at 37 we welcome 'Enter the ninja' by Die Antwoord, a hip-hop group from South Africa.

The final new entry of the week is a 3rd UK Top 40 hit for R&B star Iyaz. 'So big' is new at 40, following up 'Solo' which peaked at 3 in June. His first and biggest hit was of course 'Replay' which spent a fortnight at the top in January.

Next week...

The Saturdays are up 13 places at 49 with their new single 'Higher', Enrique Iglesias has a new entry at 50 with 'Heartbeat' and Kylie Minogue's 'Get outta my way' is up 29 places at 57. All of these are likely to hit the top 40 next week.

Ke$ha's 'Take it off is physically available this week and could climb in to the top 10 next week as a result.

Can Alexandra Burke's 'Start without you' hold on to the top spot for a 3rd week? Will The Script continue to climb and score their first number 1 hit with 'For the first time', could Katy Perry's 'Teenage dream' rebound and hit the top, or could Taio Cruz's 'Dynamite go back to number 1?

The biggest threat to Alexandra in terms of new releases is Bruno Mars' 'Just the way you are' which is newly available to download this week. Iyaz is likely to have 2 hits in the chart next week as 'So big' will almost certainly climb and he features on Charice's new download only track 'Pyramid' which is likely to enter next weeks countdown. Alex Gaudino's new download and physical release ' I'm in love', Nick Jonas' 'Introducing me' download only and Mark Ronson's 'The bike song' are all expected to chart next week.

Look at some of those great new releases! Sia and A-ha. :D

Very sad that The Catalyst was out but the Park should've stuck to their old albums styles.

She has no chance I'm afraid Diego. Bruno Mars seized the #1 spot yesterday, Katy will be #2 for another week, it seems!

Thanks for another awesome write up Brett

Music Week article:

Singles

Very different dynamics affect the apex of the main charts this week, with Alexandra Burke staying put atop the singles chart to end a sequence of 11 straight weeks in which the leadership has changed, while Irish band The Script provide the seventh change atop the artist album chart in as many weeks.

On the compilations chart Now That’s What I Call Music! 76 extends its compilation chart superiority to nine weeks.

Burke’s Start Without You, which also features US rapper Laza Morgan, sold a further 53,123 copies last week – the lowest for a number one for 15 weeks - to stay at the apex, and is the first song to spend more than one week as the nation’s top single since California Gurls spent a fortnight in pole position for Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg in July.

Perry’s follow-up to that, Teenage Dream, has spent two weeks at number two but dips to number three this week (46,162 sales), swapping positions with Taio Cruz’s former number one, Dynamite (48,869 sales). Also trading places, The Script’s For The First Time improves 5-4 (43,080 sales), at the expense of Olly Murs’ Please Don’t Let Me Go (34,411 sales).

Getting to number one is obviously desirable but NOT getting to number one can be cool too – Love The Way You Lie by Eminem feat. Rihanna spent four weeks at number two without ever making it to the top but is rewarded for sustained high sales by jumping 3-1 on the year to date rankings.

The track rallies 7-6 on its 13th straight week in the Top 10, with sales of 31,877 lifting its overall tally to 651,197, enough to eclipse both Fireflies by Owl City (639,587 sales), and Everybody Hurts by Helping Haiti (620,596 sales). Stan (791,278 sales) is the only one of 33 previous Eminem chart entries – as main or featured artist, or with band D12 – to still have higher sales than Love The Way You Lie.

Shontelle provides the week’s highest new entry, arriving at number 10 (22,292 sales) with Impossible, the introductory single from her upcoming second album, No Gravity. It’s her second Top 10 single, following T-Shirt, which got to number six.

Usher topped the chart last time out, with OMG, but follow-up DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love looked like it was going to fall short of the Top 10, uniquely spending its first four weeks in the chart rooted at number 20 before a decline set in.

However, the track has proved very tenacious and makes the Top 10 at the ninth attempt this week. With a career chart log reading 20-20-20-20-21-24-17-14-7, the track – which also features Pitbull - has thus far sold 144,982 copies, including 27,077 last week. OMG holds at number 60 on its 26th chart appearance, has thus far sold 622,718 copies, and moves to third for the year ahead of Helping Haiti.

Sky 1’s talent contest Must Be The Music has provided Top 10 debuts for new acts for each of the last two weeks but supplies lesser chart entries this week for Missing Andy’s Song For The Deaf (number 36, 6,623 sales) and Hero’s Swept Away (number 131, 1,494 sales). The final was screened last night, and will doubtless give the six finalists’ songs a further boost a week hence. Missing Andy also make the chart with a second song, The Way We Were (Made In England), which was released on their own, eponymous label three months ago and debuts at number 62 (3,400 sales).

The Manic Street Preachers log their 35th chart entry – and their first for nearly three years – debuting at number 28 (9,749 sales) with (It’s Not War) Just The End Of Love, the introductory single from their 10th studio album Postcards From A Young Man.

It lengthens their lead over The Stereophonics (26 hits) as the Welsh band with most singles success, though they still trail Tom Jones in the overall Welsh rankings.

Singles sales are down 6.60% week-on-week to 2,446,032 – 1.87% above same week 2009 sales of 2,401,047.

Albums

The Script secure their second number one album, with Science & Faith opening in pole position on sales of 70,816.

Their self-titled 2008 album also opened at number one, on sales of 54,520. It has enjoyed a revival in the run-up to the launch of the group’s new album, and leaps 39-21 this week to secure its highest chart position for more than a year, selling a further 6,249 copies to lift its career tally to 942,998.

With the final, vital quarter of the year under way in a fortnight, album release schedules are bulging, and no fewer than 17 new entries flood into the Top 75 this week – the highest tally for 102 weeks - five of them in the Top 10.

Although they are the least experienced chart campaigners, The Script lead an all new top four – the first this year - with the three acts following immediately in their wake having notched up a grand total of 20 number ones between them.

Looking to register their third number one in a row, Linkin Park have to settle for second place with A Thousand Suns (46,711 sales), having opened at number one with Meteora (2003, 93,886 sales) and Minutes To Midnight (2007, 94,501 sales).

Robert Plant had eight number ones with Led Zeppelin, and reached number two last time out (2007) with his Alison Krauss collaboration Raising Sand. His Band Of Joy debuts at number three (35,354 sales).

Phil Collins has fared even better, with 10 number ones under his belt – six as a member of Genesis and four solo. His new album, Going Back, is a collection of covers, primarily of Motown material, and opens at number four (35,072 sales). It’s Collins’ first new album since Testify opened at number 15 on sales of 26,952, in the more rarefied sales atmosphere of November.

Also new to the Top 75 this week are Interpol’s self-titled second album (number 10, 11,114 sales), Grinderman 2 by Grinderman (number 14, 9,486 sales), Anthems by actress Kerry Ellis (number 15, 9,165 sales), Barking by dance veterans Underworld (number 26, 5,146 sales), Senior by Royksopp (number 33, 3,864 sales), Dream Of You by Sharon Corr (number 37, 3,754 sales), Body Talk Part 2 by Robyn (number 38, 3,602 sales), Great Expectation by The Jolly Boys feat. Albert Minott (number 48, 3,045 sales), Hurley by Weezer (number 49, 3,033 sales), Acid Country by Paul Heaton (number 51, 2,936 sales), Songs From The Road by Leonard Cohen (number 68, 2,114 sales), Wilderness Heart by Black Mountain (number 66, 2,151 sales) and Wonderlustre by Skunk Anansie (number 58, 2,619 sales).

Naturally, a lot of albums take a severe buffeting from the mass influx – Brandon Flowers’ Flamingo slips 1-5 (30,090 sales), Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream falls 2-7 (19,264 sales), Stone Sour’s Audio Secrecy slumps 6-29 (4,286 sales) and even The xx’s self-titled debut suffers a 3-6 dip (22,956 sales) in its first full week after its Mercury Prize win.

But a sense of comparative calm pervades the compilation chart with only five debuts in the Top 50 and Now! 76 selling 17,532 copies to top the chart for the ninth time – the longest reign since Now! 73 topped for 12 weeks last year.

Despite the rash of new product, album sales increase only 3.24% week-on-week to 1,719,477 – 12.60% below same week 2009 sales of 1,967,303.
