The UK has a new number 1 single, courtesy of this weeks highest new entry which belongs to UK Garage acts collaboration Roll Deep which includes artists such as Wiley, Skepta. The single ‘Green Light’ is the follow up to ‘Good times’ which had a 3 week run at number 1 back in May. ‘Green Light’ is straight in at the top, immediately becoming their 4th UK Top 40 hit and the 2nd number 1 hit for the collaboration. Flo Rida's 'Club can't handle me' which climbed to number 1 last week, is down 2 places at 3.

So, it seems it wasn't meant to be for Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love the way you lie’ which is once again stuck at number 2 after being in the lead for number 1 for most of this week. If it had hit the top it would've been the first hit to have an 8 week run in the top 10 before reaching number 1 since All Saints’ ‘Never ever’ did the same in late 1997 – Early 1998. 'Love the way you lie' is the only song inside this weeks top 5 that hasn't reached the top and it's highest of 5 non-movers in a very static top 10. Also not moving are Yolanda be cool's 'We no speak americano' at 4, NeYo's 'Beautiful monster' at 5, Travie McCoy's 'Billionaire' at 6 and Eliza Doolittle's 'Pack up' at 9.

Just outside the top 10 is this weeks second highest new entry, courtesy of electronic production duo Chase and Status; ‘Let you go’ is their second UK Top 40 hit, debuting this week at 11, following up ‘End Credits’, which peaked at 9 last November.

Also making a return to the chart this week is Romanian dance singer Inna. ‘Amazing’ is new at 14 following up her debut hit ‘Hot’ which peaked at 6 back in April of this year.

This weeks final new entry marks the long awaited return of UK indie act One Night Only. ‘Say you didn’t want it’ is new at 23, it’s the bands 3rd UK Top 40 hit; they were last in the chart with ‘It’s about time’ which peaked at 37 in May 2008, their biggest hit is of course ‘Just for tonight’ which reached number 9 in February 2008.

Comiserations to the hits moving down the chart for the first time: at 16 is Tinchy Stryder's 'In my system', down 6 places after just 1 week in the top 10 at number 10, after being stuck at number 20 for 4 consecutive weeks, Usher's 'DJ got us falling in love' is down 1 at 21, Ellie Goulding's 'The writer' looks to have peaked at 19 as it's down 10 at 29 this week, and just hanging in to the top 40 for a 2nd week is Devlin's 'Brainwashed' at 40.

There's good news for Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina this week, their former number 4 hit 'Stereo love' is climbing back up for the 3rd consecutive week, it's up 1 at 22 now having rebounded 8 places in the past 3 weeks; the song is now clocking up its 15th week inside the top 30.

You'd have been forgiven last week for assuming DJ Fresh's 'Gold dust' was to be a flash in the pan after it dipped 3 places on only its 2nd charting week, but it seems there could be hope for the track yet, this week it's up 3 places and back at its original debut position of number 23.

The success of Train's 'Hey soul sister' just seems to be endless, in spite of the track only managing to peak at number 18, this week it's clocking up its 17th week inside the top 40 and is moving back up yet again; after stalling at 34 for the last 3 consecutive weeks, this week it's up 4 places and back in the top 30 at number 30.

There are 2 other long runners making chart u-turns at the bottom end of the top 40: in spite of Jason Derulo's latest hit 'What if' running out of steam without reaching the top 10, his former number 2 hit 'Ridin' solo' is back up 1 at number 37 in its 17th charting week and just below at 38 is a rise of 1 place for Shakira's 'Waka waka' which is now clocking up its 11th week inside the top 40 without having ever reached the top 20. As 'Waka waka' is the only lingerer from the World Cup hits, we must assume that this track has taken on a life of its own regardless of its football related origin.

Bubbling under...

After a 21 week chart run, Usher's former number 1 hit 'OMG' has finally left the chart, this week dipping 6 at 41. Also departing this week are Plan B's top 3 hit 'She said' which is down 6 at 43 after a 20 week chart run and
after 16 weeks in the chart Alicia Keys' former top 10 hit 'Try sleeping with a broken heart' is down 5 at 45.

Ke$ha could be about to score a new top 40 hit as 'Take it off' has risen 127 places and currently resides at 44. Iyaz also has a potential new hit bubbling under; 'So big' is up 52 places at number 54. Also climbing is Rihanna's 'Hard', up 39 places at 64 and Saturdays' 'Higher' is new at 86.

Next week...

Roll Deep face tough competition next week from Taio Cruz whose new single 'Dynamite' is newly available for download and physically and is expected to enter high. Katy B's 'Katy on a mission' is newly available to download and is likely to enter in the top 10, as is Aggros Santos' 'Saint or sinner'. Brandon Flowers' 'Crossfire' is newly available in all formats and is likely to make a mark on next weeks chart as is Rumer's 'Slow'. The Pretty Reckless are hoping for a 2nd hit next week with vinyl/download track 'Miss nothing' and Biffy Clyro are likely to enter the chart with 'God and satan'. Inna's 'Amazing' could climb next week as it is now available physically.

Other potential hits now available to download:

Daughtry – September
Goo Goo Dolls – Home
Kano – Upside
Maria Mena – Just Hold Me

MUSICWEEK ARTICLE

Singles

The eighth number one single in as many weeks, Green Light debuts in pole position for London garage/grime collective Roll Deep, on first week sales of 57,412 – that’s 13.70% down on the opening tally of 66,523 which secured their last single, Good Times, a number one debut 16 weeks ago.

Good Times was one of the more tenacious number ones of 2010, spending three weeks at the summit – a run equalled only by Owl City’s Fireflies – and has sold 307,495 copies to date. Both Green Light and Good Times are included on Roll Deep’s second album, Winner Stays On, which will be released in a fortnight (September 6).

With punters giving the green light to Roll Deep, there’s more amber agony for Eminem, who was ahead in the first mid-week sales flash, and appeared to be on course to collect his eighth number one with Rihanna collaboration, Love The Way You Lie.

The track is on its ninth straight week in the Top 10 and would have been the first single to reach number one so far into its Top 10 career since 1994/5 when Celine Dion’s Think Twice scrambled to the top on its ninth week in the top tier (and 16th week in the Top 75).

This was arguably Love The Way You Lie’s best chance of getting to number one. It sold 54,110 copies last week to hold at number two – 6.9% less than the week before – to lift its career tally to 494,845 but will be hard pressed to rival Taio Cruz’s Dynamite, which seems set to be number one a week hence.

Four other singles in the Top 10 are static this week, though in reality all are in decline, with double digit dips in sales week-on-week.

They are: Yolanda Be Cool feat. D Cup’s We No Speak Americano (4-4, 38,354 sales), Ne-Yo’s Beautiful Monster (5-5, 34,615 sales), Billionaire by Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars (6-6, 33,690 sales) and Eliza Doolitle’s Pack Up (9-9, 26,647 sales).

Completing the Top 10, last week’s number one, Club Can’t Handle Me, slips to number three for Flo-Rida feat. David Guetta, on sales of 47,999; The Saturdays’ Missing You ebbs 5-7 (33,635 sales); Airplanes dips 7-8 for B.o.B. feat. Hayley Williams (29,136 sales); and All Time Low declines 8-10 for The Wanted (25,284 sales).

Falling just short of the Top 10, drum & bass duo Chase & Status follow up their number nine Plan B collaboration End Credits with a number 11 debut for Let You Go, which also features Mali (23,899 sales).

Elsewhere in the Top 40 there are debuts for Yorkshire band One Night Only in at number 23 (9,633 sales) with Say You Don’t Want It, the first single from their eponymous second album; and Romanian singer Inna, who lands her second hit with Amazing (number 14, 16,382 sales.). It’s the follow-up to Hot, which reached number six, spent five weeks in the Top 10 and sold 220,000 copies earlier this year.

Singles sales dip 3.39% week-on-week to 2,445,669 - that’s a 17-week low but is 8.33% above same week 2009 sales of 2,257,630.

Albums

Iron Maiden’s first studio album for four years, The Final Frontier earns the veteran heavy metal act its fourth number one in all and its first since 1992, with first week sales of 44,385 copies.

That tally includes 1,343 vinyl albums – the 36th highest tally by any album in that format in the 21st century and the highest since Arctic Monkey’s Humbug shifted 1,490 copies a year ago this week.

In case you are wondering, all of the seven best weekly vinyl sales since 2000 were by Travis’ The Invisible Band, with a top tally of 5,503 in week 39, 2001.

The Final Frontier’s sales are marginally more than the 44,134 sales which earned Iron Maiden’s last studio album, A Matter Of Life And Death, a number four debut in 2006. Since then, their ‘best of’ Somewhere Back In Time debuted at number 14 on sales of 9,183 (2008) and live set Flight 666 debuted at number 15 on sales of 9,736 (2009).

The Final Frontier’s success extends Iron Maiden’s span of number ones from a previously modest 10 years to 28 years – they also topped with The Number Of The Beast (1982), Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988) and Fear Of The Dark (1992). The Final Frontier is Iron Maiden’s 37th album chart entry – a record for a heavy metal band.

Iron Maiden’s high flying debuts means that Eminem’s Recovery is toppled for the third time.

Previously dethroned by Kylie Minogue and Arcade Fire, Recovery dips to number two on sales of 27,794. With six weeks at number one and three weeks at number two, it hasn’t been out of the top two yet.

The Saturdays didn’t get their anticipated first number one single last week – and their mini album Headlines (eight songs, 28 minutes) is similarly found wanting – though its number three debut (22,981 sales) provides the girl group with its highest album chart placing to date.

Their 2008 debut, Chasing Lights, entered at number 11 (22,393 sales) and peaked at number nine 12 weeks later, eventually selling 337,649 copies; follow-up Wordshaker debuted and peaked at number nine last year, with first week sales of 15,022, and to date sales of 80,810.

The Hoosiers’ debut album, The Trick To Life, entered the chart at number one on sales of 55,185 in 2007, following the success of their first two singles, Worried About Ray (number five in June) and Goodbye Mr A (number four), and has thus far sold 638,474 copies. With first single Choices peaking at number 11 a fortnight ago, follow-up The Illusion Of Safety debuts at number 10 (10,565 sales).

David Gray’s first album of the 21st century, White Ladder, is the fourth biggest seller of the current millennium, with a whopping sale of 2,928,422.

His last album, Draw The Line, reached number five and sold a fortieth of that. Gray has already gone on record to talk down new album Foundling’s sales expectations, saying “this record is going to disappear off the face of the earth, barring some freak occurrence.” In fact, it opens at number 18 (6,817 sales).

Marked down to £3 in the HMV sale, Bullet For My Valentine’s Fever more than doubles its sales week-on-week to 4,025, while climbing 91-34, and the same chain’s £3.99 pricing of I Dreamed A Dream help Susan Boyle’s album to catapult 133-43 (3,066 sales).

It was the 33rd anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death last Monday (16th), a fact which sparked a big increase in sales of Elvis 75, the album issued to mark what would have been his 75th birthday in January. Sales of the set were up 163% week-on-week to 2,534, generating a 167-56 chart leap.

After four straight weeks at number three, Plan B’s album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks slips to fourth place. Sales of 16,240 increase its 19 week tally to just short of half a million (496,290).

Now That’s What I Call Music! 76 safely completes a fifth week at number one on the compilation chart, with sales of 39,344, 60.97% more than the Ministry Of Sound/Sony compilation 80’s Groove, which spends its fourth straight week at number two.

Now! 76’s 562,520 sales are just below same stage sales of 566,756 for 2009 equivalent Now! 73, and an impressive 25.27% ahead of its immediate 2010 predecessor, Now! 75.

Album sales increase 5.82% week-on-week to 1,803,564 – 10.11% above same week 2009 sales of 1,638,027.
