How the HELL can somebody achieve this much, and even more impressively, achieve it with their debut? No matter how you count this (one studio album, + an EP, or just one studio album, full stop), what Gaga has achieved is tantamount to the heyday of Celine/Jackson/the Beatles. In the early 00's, this would equate to a 20/25m selling studio album! Other successful periods:
Celine Dion - 1996-1998:
Falling Into You and Lets Talk About Love both sold over 25m copies in their first year, she released the second highest selling French album of all-time (behind her own Deux record), and she sold over 8m copies of My Heart Will Go On, plus other assorted hit singles. In total, Celine Dion sold over 60m albums, and over 20m singles.
Michael Jackson - 1982-1984:
It was 1982 when Jackson hit his true peak, with Thriller breaking records all over the world. By 1984, the album had sold over 20m copies, and had spent two years in the global charts. It would take Jackson a further 5 years to truly exhaust the potential of Thriller, by which time it had earned him countless awards, and over 45m in hard worldwide shipments!
The Beatles - 1964-1966:
Their biggest period, commercially. Whilst the albums they released didn't sell in huge quantites initially (obviously, for the time they were released in, they broke records), the Beatles @ the time replicated the success of a modern day Gaga, four-fold. They were the biggest thing ever (arguably until Michael Jackson came along), and when working out the Beatles sales, you can conclude that the Beatles were selling 20,000 albums per day during their heyday. A massive figure, bettered only by Celine Dion, Mariah Carey & Michael Jackson, all of whom were selling in much bigger markets.
What other huge two year periods can you think of?
