In the stern instructions of the Government advertisement he caught it, binned it and killed it, but the actor who attempts to teach the public about how to contain the spread of swine flu has failed to apply the lesson to his own life.
David McCusker, 30, who is shown on the advert learning how to catch his sneeze and dispose of it safely, was quarantined two weeks ago after he was diagnosed with the illness.
He said that he has received endless ribbing from unsympathetic friends.
“I was supposed to ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’, but instead I’ve been shivering, shaking and spreading it,” he said.
“It was a shock when I found out. I quarantined myself to sweat it out.
“I’ve been getting lots of stick from mates. I caught it, didn’t bin it and spread it all over the place.”
He has since recovered and is on holiday, but his agent said that he had been suffering until two weeks ago.
Mr McCusker, from Sutton, Surrey, has a burgeoning stage career and recently appeared as Sherlock Holmes in an English-language production in Copenhagen and in Breathing Corpses at a fringe venue in London.
He may be more widely known for his appearances in advertisements for organisations such as PC World and the Welsh Tourist Board.
He realised that he could be in trouble when he began suffering from a cold and developed a fever. He telephoned the swine flu hotline, and was instructed to see his GP, who confirmed the illness and prescribed Tamiflu.
In the Department of Health advertisement he is shown entering a lift and sneezing into his hands. A gel, designed to represent his mucus, is shown spraying onto surfaces in the lift, which other actors inadvertently touch.
Mr McCusker is then shown acting correctly. As he is about to sneeze a child offers him a tissue, which he uses to cover his mouth and nose. He then disposes of the tissue and washes his hands.
The sneeze scene, which was set up by an effects team who also worked on Quantum of Solace, took 30 takes to complete
