What Lady Gaga has achieved over the last couple of years with her debut record, The Fame is tantamount to being the biggest era in music since boybands dominated the late 90's/early 00's; collectively, Lady Gaga has sold over 55m records since 2008 - a two year time frame - and she continues to shift tens of thousands of copies of her music each week, in the USA alone. She has released 7 MASSIVE singles and she has two of the top 5 best-selling digital singles of all-time in the USA, as well as two of the top 5 best-selling digital singles in the UK. Her worldwide tour to support the Fame by conclusion will bring in well over $100,000,000 (if its not already there). She is quite simply, the biggest current music star in the world.
Will she ever outdo this era though? Jackson's limit was Thriller, Celine's limit was Lets Talk About Love, Mariah's was Music Box, Janet's was Control, but these artists all reached their peak many years into their career. Will Gaga achieve her biggest success with her debut, like Britney, Cyndi, Alanis & Christina have done, and live in this shadow forever? Or will she go onto achieve the Fame x10 (so to speak)

Great topic Wayne.
I think that she WILL outdo herself in a few years. New songs that have leaked after TFM was released sound promising - I think Gaga has yet to give us what she's really made of. Unlike Christina and Britney, she's already proven herself to be a very hard, consistent worker so I think her talent and work ethic - combined with that craziness and star quality the world loves - will result in an even bigger era sometime in the near future.
That's not to say that it will be easy - 55m records in her first 2 years, that's marginally more than Madonna, Celine, Mariah, etc. accomplished!

I thought Janet peaked with Rhythm Nation, no???
I say no, just cause you can't have that big of a debut and consistently top it success wise.

^ Well we're not talking about consistency, this is about whether she'll ever have at least a SINGLE bigger era.

I don't think she ever will outdo this era. I think she's here to stay - she has an artistry about her that her contemporaries such as Katy Perry, Ke$ha etc don't. In fact, I shouldn't even group her with those - she's in a league unto herself, standing alone. I might not like all of her work, but there is no denying that nobody has impacted music like this since the 90's, and Britney emerged. Gaga is a modern day Michael Jackson in terms of press coverage, success, influence and sales. She succeeds in every field. I'm not being funny, and mind my use of this word, but Gaga could sh!t in a bottle, sell it and it'd sell well!
I don't ever think she'll outdo this era - just as an example, she's had 10 songs impact the ARIA charts in Australia, and is about to see an 11th - she's just too big now!

Well in terms of eras, that probably was her most successful, when factoring in touring revenue, single's success. But Janet is her biggest selling studio set.

Alas, I am probably wrong! At least as far as first weeks are concerned; the Fame opened with 24,000 copies in the USA, Born This Way should open with sales of 5,000% more than the Fame! She's come so far.
Anyway, 2 years down the line, should Born This Way still be charting, then maybe she will have outdone her original era! :o

As promising as the first week sales may be, I don't think Born This Way will top The Fame. She's frustratingly weird now. Not that I don't like it, but I think she still believes that her weirdness is her "shock factor" when the most shocking thing she can do now is fashion herself similar to what she looked like during The Fame era (pre Paparazzi). She's losing appeal, gradually but definitely.

She's been confirmed at 140k Japan, 70k Australia, 215k UK, over 1.2m US, so she's doing fabulous so far

Indeed! But I think that's to do with the fans she made during The Fame era. At the end of this era I believe she wont have sold as much as The Fame/Monster. She just doesn't have the consistency or general appeal this time round.
I hope that I'm wrong though

Well the Fame sold 8m copies, and the Fame Monster has sold about ~6m copies.
So as long as she matches the Fame Monster, she should be good for a top 3 place in the best-sellers list come year end.
