Madonna is most played artist of the noughties

05 April 2010

Madonna has been revealed as the most played artist of the past decade in a show broadcast this afternoon on Radio 2.

The exclusive chart, The People’s Artists’ Chart, was presented by Patrick Keilty and revealed The Beatles and Robbie Williams at numbers two and three respectively.

The top ten most played artists featured performances ranging all the way through the fifties (Elvis Presley), the sixties (The Beatles), the seventies (Queen & Abba), the eighties (Elton John), the nineties (Robbie Williams & Take That) and the noughties (Madonna, Sugababes & Coldplay).

The chart was compiled using unique PPL data and is a true reflection of the most played artists over the past ten years – from radio and television airplay to public performance use in clubs, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms etc.

The full top 50 can be found below and can be heard on BBC iPlayer until Monday 12 April (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer).
