39(NE) Lily Allen - Who'd have known
40(34) Shakira - Did it again
This is the second to last countdown before the Christmas chart and this weeks movement is already providing us with a flavour of what's going to be selling during the festive season and what won't.
Leaving the chart this week is Snow Patrol's 'Just say yes', Chipmunk's former chart topper 'Oopsy daisy', Dizzee Rascal's 'Dirtee cash', David Guetta's number 1 hit 'Sexy bitch', Alesha Dixon's 'Love again', Mariah Carey's 'I want to know what love is', Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' and Susan Boyle's 'I dreamed a dream'.
In the bottom half of the chart is bad luck for Shakira as 'Did it again' has dropped yet again and looks unlikely to become her 8th top 20 hit. The track is now the second worst performing of her career; the first being the number 34 peak of 'Illegal' in Christmas of 2006. Also looking set to be minor hits are Robbie William's 'You know me' and Chris Brown's 'I can transform ya', both of which are moving further down the chart this week.
Lily Allen is back; 'Who'd have known' is new at number 39, it's the 9th top 40 hit of her career which follows up her last hit entitled '22' which peaked at 14 back in August. Lily's biggest hits are of course her 2 number 1 hits 'Smile' (summer 06) and 'The fear' (feb 09).
Also new this week is a 7th UK top 40 hit for N-Dubz; 'Playing with fire' has landed at number 32. The track also features Mr Hudson who has himself had 3 previous hits of his own this year, most notably 'Supernova' which peaked at number 2 in August. 'Playing with fire' follows up N-Dubz top 5 hit 'I need you' which itself currently lies at number 27.
There's good news this week for fans of US rockers 30 seconds to mars as their new single has become their 3rd top 40 hit, 'Kings and queens' has debuted at 28 and has immediately matched the number 28 peak of their previous biggest hit 'The kill' back in October 2007.
There are 3 re-entries this week that won't come as a shock to any chart buffs out there. At 31 lies 'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl, this Christmas hit originally peaked at number 2 in 1987 and since then it has also hit the top 40 in 1991 and has wandered around the top 40 every Christmas since inclusion of download sales in 2005. Download sales have caused the song to climb as high as number 3 before. How high will it climb this year? Doesn't everyone who wants it already have it? Watch this space....
Also back for Christmas is Mariah Carey's 'All I want for Christmas' which also peaked at number 2 originally, back in 1995. Download sales in recent years have taken this track as high as number 4; this week it's number 29. The return of this classic to the chart is rather ironic as her new single 'I want to know what love is' has sunk without a trace after just 1 week in the top 40.
The highest re-entry is Cheryl Cole and Will I Am's 'Three words'. The track had a premature 3 week run in the chart in November when it peaked at 26; this week the track's back and has immediately beaten it's previous peak, this week, it's number 25. Both Cheryl and Will I Am can boast multiple hits in the chart, Cheryl's former chart topper 'Fight for this love' is at number 10 and as part of Black Eyed Peas, Will I Am has 2 former chart toppers inside the top 20.
Moving up the chart again is Taken by Tree's version of 'Sweet Child o' mind', now on its 3rd charting week, it's jumped 10 places up the chart to a new peak of number 23. Could this be a big player in the Christmas chart?
There's a clutch of climbers at the bottom end of the top 20. At 19 is a huge climber, 'Look for me' by Chipmunk and Talay Riley is up 17 places on only its 2nd charting week. Could this be on the way to becoming Chipmunks 2nd chart topper?
One place above at 18 is 50 Cent and Ne-yo's 'Baby by me'. The track is up 7 places to a new peak on its 3rd charting week (having moved down last week) and has now become 50 Cent's 14th top 20 hit and Ne-yo's 9th.
Also climbing is Westlife's 'What about now?' The former number 2 hit has taken a chart u-turn, back up 4 places at 17.
After just a week inside the top 10 Susan Boyle's 'Wild horses' has dipped 4 places to number 13; in fairness it seems she will be more of an album sales artist as her debut album has broken records on the album chart.
Pixie Lott's 'Cry me out' is now flirting with the top 10. The track has been plodding its way up the chart for the past month, this week it's up 4 places to a new peak of number 12. It's seemingly unlikely to become Pixie's 3rd chart topper but it has top 10 potential.
This weeks second-highest new entry belongs to Timbaland and Nelly Furtado. 'Morning after dark' has landed at number 9. It's Timbaland's 13th top 40 hit and Nelly's 14th. This is of course not the first time these artists have collaborated, back in the spring of 2007 they teamed up with Justin Timberlake on their number 1 hit 'Give it to me'.
One place higher is the weeks highest new entry,it's 'Doesn't mean anything' by Alicia Keys. It's her 12th UK hit and 5th to reach the top 10. That's not the only good news for Alicia this week however as her biggest hit 'Empire state of mind' (with Jay Z) has jumped back up 11 places to number 11, now on its 12th charting week.
There's more frustration for Kei$ha and her fans. 'Tik tok' is now at number 7 for a 3rd consecutive week, meaning that she has now spent 5 weeks no higher than number 6 and no lower than number 7. It's a different story for Jason Derulo however as after being stuck at number 3 for the past fortnight, this week 'Whatcha say' has fallen 3 places to number 6.
Former number 1's from the X Factor finalists and Black Eyed Peas are still inside the top 5, 'You are not alone' has fallen 3 places to 5 and 'Meet me halfway' is locked at number 4.
This weeks top 3 contains 2 climbers; at number 3 is a rise of 2 places for Lady Gaga's 'Bad romance', now in its 6th charting week. This is in fact now the 3rd biggest UK hit of her career, now beating the number 4 peak of 'Paparazzi'. Also climbing is last weeks highest new entry, Rihanna's 'Russian Roulette', up 4 places to number 2 and has become her 12th top 5 hit.
This of course means that Peter Kays animated all stars 'Children in Need medley' is at the top of the chart for a second week.

Mariah Carey’s 1994 hit All I Want For Christmas Is You makes the Top 40 for the third Christmas in a row, climbing 51-29 (11,248 sales).
It’s running slow and late this year, and seems unlikely to match the number four peak it reached in 2007, or the number 12 place it claimed last year. Its leap contrasts with the 19-45 slump (6,746 sales) of Carey’s current single, I Want To Know What Love Is.
The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York, another Christmas fixture, makes The Top 40 for the fifth year in a row. The 1987 hit reached number three in 2005, number six in 2006, number four in 2007 and number 12 last year. It climbs 58-31 (10,746 sales) this week.
In the same week last year Carey’s hit was already number 17 and The Pogues’ number 19 - Christmas songs are generally later in reaching the chart this year and lower placed, with seven in the current Top 75, compared to 11 in the same week last year and 13 in 2007.
Thanks Neil!
