YOUR WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: What we have here typifies summertime lite in terms of the release schedule and sales totals. Aside from the ongoing, if gradually receding, activity on the part of Michael Jackson’s massive fan base, the stories that stick out here are the obvious appeal of coed country groups, with two of the three debuts of any note this week, and the transformation of Lollapalooza headliners Kings of Leon from cult band to superstars a full six years after their initial release. As you can see, below the top five titles, it's very much a bottleneck as we head into the weekend...

Music Week wrote:

The Essential Michael Jackson’s sales take a double digit dip for the fifth straight week but the set is number one again on the artist album chart.

The Essential has now topped the chart for seven weeks in a row, and pulls level with Robbie Williams’ Swing When You’re Winning (2001/2) and Leona Lewis’ Spirit (2007/8) in third place in the table of albums with most consecutive weeks at number one this century.

Ahead of it lie only James Blunt’s Back To Bedlam (eight weeks in 2005) and The Beatles 1 (nine weeks, 2000/1). However, The Essential sold just 25,970 copies last week – the lowest tally for a number one album since May 18 2002, when Doves’ Last Broadcast topped the chart with a sale of 22,437.

It looks like 'The Essential' will drop out of the
UK Top 4, in next Sunday's Album Chart - 23rd August.

However, the 1 No.1 Week, from 'Number Ones',
& 7 from, 'The Essential', have enabled him to jump
from 15th= place in the 'Most No.1 Album Weeks'
List, to 7th= place. He was on 22 No.1 Weeks, at the
start of 2009 - equal with Bob Dylan, David Bowie,
& Dire Straits. His new Total of 30 Weeks, is
enough for 7th= place - with Cliff Richard.

Billboard Comprehensive Albums Chart Update - September 5, 2009

Jackson Update: Michael Jackson records just four albums in this week's Comprehensive Top 40, down from a minimum of seven in each of the last eight weeks. He does get two Top 10 albums for the ninth week in a row, as "The Essential Michael Jackson" holds onto the #9 spot. "Number Ones" has been either #1 or #2 on the Comprehensive chart for the last nine weeks. This week it finishes second to another country album, Reba McEntire's "Keep On Loving You". The Jackson phenomenon is hardly over, as there are still 11 Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 Catalog albums on the Comprehensive tally.

Michael Jackson tour history:

Victory Tour- The Tour started on July 6th in Kansas City and the Victory album was released on the same day. The tour consisted of 55 shows over 5 months in the United States and Canada to approximately 2 million people. The tour was the biggest and most successful of its time and Michael announced at the start of the tour that he would be donating all of his profits to charity.The Tour grossed $75 million and set a new record for the then-largest grossing tour. It would be Michael's last tour with the brothers.

Bad World Tour- The tour consisted of 123 concerts to approximately 4.4 million fans across 15 countries for 17 months. When the tour finished it grossed a total of over $125 million, adding two new entries in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest grossing tour in history and the tour with the largest attended audience. The tour also was also the largest of its time and created a huge press and media coverage across the globe. It also broke multiple records and attendances at venues. And the tour remains the second largest tour for a solo artist in terms of attendance, a record only surpassed by Michael himself. And the tour also holds the record for Most Successful Concert Series Ever; Michael sold out for seven nights at the legendary Wembley Stadium, London, England in the summer of 1988. A total of 504,000 people saw Michael perform July 14-16, 22-23, and August 26-27, 1988.

Dangeorus World Tour- The tour consisted of 69 concerts to approximately 3.5 million fans across 29 countries and grossed over $145 million. All proceeds from the tour were donated to multiple charities including the Heal the World Foundation, which was founded by Jackson himself. The tour was to be even bigger and better than the "Bad" tour, in terms of material. The tour was due to last longer, but due to the sudden police raids of Jackson's Neverland Ranch during the second leg in 1993, as well as various health problems, Jackson decided to end the tour early in Mexico. Despite the tour ending early, it was still incredibly successful, and was also the largest of its time and created a huge press and media coverage across the globe. It also broke multiple records and attendances at venues. Jackson sold the film rights to his concert in Bucharest, Romania to HBO for $21 million. The deal was the highest ever paid for a live concert. The concert was broadcast live on radio and shown on TV across 61 countries, and received the highest TV ratings in the history of the network of HBO with an audience of 250 million people.

HIStory World Tour- The tour consisted of 82 concerts; it visited 35 countries and was attended by approximately 4.5 million fans, which stays to this day the biggest tour ever in terms of international attendance (4.4 million tickets outside of USA) and the largest tour in terms of attendance for a solo artist. The tour also holds the record for most countries visited by any artist. It became Jackson's most successful tour; the tour grossed a total of over $173.5 million. And like all of Michael's previous tours, it was the largest of its time and created a huge press and media coverage across the globe. It also broke multiple records and attendances at venues. Also the HIStory tour remains largest and most successful tour by a solo artist. A record which was previously held by Jackson's Dangerous Tour and before that his Bad Tour.

Ahead of the new Jackson album’s release, sales of his back catalogue albums in the UK since he passed away on June 25 had reached 1.55m units by last week, led by nearly 515,000 sales for The Essential.

Four other Jackson albums have achieved more than 100,000 sales in this period with Thriller and Thriller 25 between them attracting more than 225,000 takers, Bad 185,000, Number Ones 167,000 and Off The Wall 138,000.

More than 1.22m Jackson singles have also been sold following his death, including Man In The Mirror being downloaded around 200,000 times.

Jackson sales 'will top 2 million in year' in UK;

Michael Jackson's UK album sales in the run-up to Christmas are expected to top two million after record label Sony announced plans to release new LP This Is It.

Music retailers are reportedly expecting the album to become one of the biggest selling records of the season and believe it will renew interest in Jackson's back catalogue, according to Music Week.

Even before the "This Is It" opening, Michael Jackson had earned $90 million in the past year, with most of it coming since his death five months ago.

That sizable sum put him third on the Forbes list of dead celebrities making the most money.

Jackson earned less than the $350 million that fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent scored in the past year, and the $235 million earned by the songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.

Forbes counted money earned from October 2008-October 2009, even for Jackson, who died June 25. But about $72 million -- or 80% of the $90 million earned in the past 12 months -- came after Jackson's death, said a spokesperson for GreenLight, a consultancy company that represents "delebs," their term for dead celebrities still earning money.

On Wednesday, Jackson -- along with AEG Entertainment and Sony -- began raking in money for next year's list as the concert-rehearsal documentary "This Is It" opened in 3,500 domestic theaters and around the world.

As for the rest of the Forbes list, it's the first time at No. 1 for Saint Laurent, who died in June 2008. And Rodgers and Hammerstein, who died in 1979 and 1960, respectively, are high on the list this time around courtesy of a $200 million acquisition of much of their catalog in April.

Coming in fourth is last year's No. 1, Elvis Presley, with $55 million; "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien is fifth with $50 million.

The rest of the Top 13 -- a Forbes deleb tradition -- consists of Charles Schulz, John Lennon, Theodor
Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), Albert Einstein, Michael Crichton, Jimi Hendrix, Aaron Spelling and Andy Warhol.

Together, the 13 delebs grossed $886 million in the past 12 months, by far the biggest total in the nine years that Forbes has put out its list. Last year, for example, the 13 top earned $194 million; the year before that was $232 million.

After three weeks, Michael Jackson's Michael Jackson's This Is It has sold 687,000 copies, which puts it at #29 for the year to date. Jackson has three other albums in the top 30 for the year to date. Number Ones is #2, Thriller is #11 and The Essential Michael Jackson is #12. Jackson is vying to become the first artist to wind up with four of the year's top 20 albums since the Nielsen/SoundScan era began in 1991. Garth Brooks had four of the top 30 in 1992 with Ropin' The Wind, The Chase, No Fences and Beyond The Season.
