Another week, another new novelty number 1 song. Peter Kay's official Children in Need medley arrived at number 18 last week as a result of only 2 days of sales since the release of the track on November 20th; this week having had a full week of sales the track has leapt 17 places up the chart and knocked the X factor finalists off the top spot.
After debuting at number 3 last week, this week Jason Derulo's 'Whatcha say' is still patiently awaiting a chance of hitting the top spot, this week it's stuck at number 3 again.
There's a double celebration for Lady Gaga this week; on its 5th charting week her latest hit 'Bad romance' has climbed 3 places to a new peak of number 5 and has thus become the 4th top 5 hit of her career. As if that wasn't enough, she has a new entry at number 30 with 'Telephone', a track which is not yet confirmed as a single, it's now Gaga's 7th top 40 hit of the year.
This weeks highest new entry marks the return of R & B sensation Rihanna. 'Russian Roulette' has landed at number 6, it's her 15th UK top 40 hit since her debut in 2005 and her 11th top 10 hit. Rihanna's last brush with top 40 success was of course 'Run this town' a collaboration with Kanye West and Jay Z which reached number 1 in September of this year.
Just below is more frustration for fans of Ke$ha; after 2 weeks at number 6, it is now a non mover again and is spending a 2nd week at the number 7 position. Is this track destined for the top 5 ever? Watch this space...
Another artist celebrating double chart success this week is Susan Boyle. She has a new entry at number 9 with her debut single 'Wild horses' and at 37, similarly to Lady Gaga is Susan's album track 'I dreamed a dream', not confirmed to be a single.
As you may be aware, 'Now that's what I call music 74' was released last Monday. Often the release of 'NOW' albums affects the singles chart as customers download their favourite tracks rather than purchasing the entire album. This could be the reason for the chart u-turn Michael Buble's 'Haven't met you yet' has made this week. The former top 5 hit has jumped back up 9 places to number 15 on its 7th charting week. There are also other songs in the top 40 which appear to have been affected by this mode of purchase:
David Guetta & Akon's former number 1 hit 'Sexy bitch' has climbed back up a place at 35 on its 16th charting week
Taio Cruz's 'Break your heart' has also rebounded a place at 32 on its 11th charting week
Jason Derulo's 'Whatcha say' may have maintained its number 3 position as a result of 'NOW' sales
Jay Sean's 'Down' may have maintained its number 12 position as a result of 'NOW' sales, particularly as the track has moved down in each of the last 3 weeks
Whitney Houston's 'Million dollar bill' may have maintained its number 28 position as a result of 'NOW' sales, this track has also been declining for the past 4 weeks
Having said all this however, the 'NOW' sales do not seem to have helped Cheryl Cole, Black Eyes Peas, N-Dubz, Alesha Dixon, Chipmunk, Sugababes, Chase & Status, Paolo Nutini and Florence & the machine, all of whose current hits have moved down the chart this week.
On with the countdown...
Pixie Lott's 'Cry me out' has moved up the chart again, up 4 places to a new peak of number 16 on its 3rd charting week. The pace of this records climbing however suggests this has little chance of becoming her 3rd consecutive chart topper.
Just below at 19 is a new entry; a 38th UK top 40 hit by Mariah Carey. The track 'I want to know what love is' was originally a number 1 hit by Foreigner at the beginning of 1985. This track is the first top 40 hit since 'Bye bye' back in May of 2008. 'I want to know..' has already beaten 'Bye bye's number 30 peak by 11 places.
After jumping up the chart in the last few weeks, it seems that Florence and the machine's version 'You got the love' may have peaked when it climbed to number 16 last week, this week the track has fallen 4 places to number 20.
Some of last weeks new entries have immediately fallen this week; 50 Cent's 'Baby be me' has fallen 2 places to 25, Alesha Dixon's 'To love again' has fallen 11 places to 26 and Shakira's 'Did it again' has fallen 8 places to 34. The only record that entered in the bottom half of last weeks chart that's making progress is Taken by trees' version of 'Sweet child o' mind' which has climbed 5 places to a new peak of number 33.
The final note-worthy track of the week is the arrival of Chipmunk's 5th hit 'Look for me'. The track has entered the chart at number 36, just in time to replace his former chart topper which now lies at 39.
This weeks chart drop-outs include Miley Cyrus's number 11 hit, 'Party in the USA' is down 13 at 43, Shakira's top 5 hit 'She wolf' is down 14 at 48, Calvin Harris's 'Flashback' is down 19 at 54, Robbie Williams's 'Bodies' is down 20 at 57 and Agnes's 'Leave you now' is down 27 at 67.
Potential new top 40 hits bubbling under include:
Cheryl Cole - 3 words (likely to re-enter) (41)
Lily Allen - 'Whod've known' (49)
N-Dubz - 'Playing with fire' (42)
Rihanna - 'Wait your turn' (45)
Mika - Rain (72)
Christmas classics bubbling under include:
