Biography according to her official website:

The best-selling female artist of all time - whose eighteen #1 singles rival all but The Beatles - Mariah Carey has made an indelible impact on the global music industry and audiences everywhere. Blessed with a stunning five-octave range and signature vocal abilities, the singularly talented superstar continues to reach new heights of artistic growth and popularity. As a singer and songwriter, she has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium," to name but a few honors.

Released in April 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi (Island Def Jam) strongly resonated with audiences, becoming that year's best-selling album in the U.S. and selling more than eight million units worldwide to date. While capturing three Grammys for Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, Carey broke milestones with the album's three singles. "We Belong Together" (which spent an astonishing fourteen weeks at #1) and "Shake It Off" made her the only female artist ever to occupy the Billboard Hot 100's #1 and #2 spots in the same week. Her subsequent stand-alone single "Don't Forget About Us" became the biggest American radio hit of the year.

With a mother who shared both talent and a love of music, Mariah Carey was named after "They Call the Wind Mariah," a song from the popular Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon. She began singing at the age of four, and her extraordinary and innate talent quickly progressed. As a young teenager she began honing her songwriting skills; upon high school graduation, Carey headed straight to New York to pursue a musical career. A luminous talent, her vocals were immediately in demand. Her major break came while singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave her demo tape to then-Sony Music Entertainment Chief Tommy Mottola. Soon after, Mottola signed Carey to her first recording contract with Columbia Records.

With an angelic allure and a vocal intensity never heard before, Mariah Carey exploded upon the scene with the debut of her self-titled album in 1990. Mariah Carey was an immense hit, spawning an extraordinary four #1 singles: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." It also brought two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ("Vision of Love"). Carey continued her early success with a series of singles from her subsequent Emotions (1991) and MTV Unplugged (1992) albums that consistently placed her at the top of the charts.

With the 1993 release of Music Box, which included the chart-topping hit singles "Dreamlover" and "Hero," Mariah Carey produced her most commercially successful album to date, selling an astounding 30 million units. She hit a new milestone with a holiday album, Merry Christmas (1994), which contained the instant classic "All I Want for Christmas is You." The next year, with the release of Daydream (1995), its single "Fantasy" debuted at #1, making Mariah Carey the second artist in history and the first female performer to accomplish that feat. The album's other single, "One Sweet Day," recorded with Boyz II Men, stayed at the top of the charts for a mind-blowing sixteen weeks. She followed with the hip-hop and R&B-infused Butterfly, which introduced a new chapter in her career, teaming her with the hottest names in the music business including Sean Combs and Missy Elliott.

In 1998, eight years after her debut, Carey released #1's, a compilation of her chart-topping hits. The album also included a new song, "When You Believe" (from the film The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston that paired two of the most successful female recording artists in pop history. Rainbow followed in 1999 with startling success. With the album's first single, the popular "Heartbeaker," Carey became "the first artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s; the record also pushed her ahead of The Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop the Hot 100 singles chart," as affirmed by AllMusic.com. Mariah Carey subsequently sparked the interest of Universal Music Group's Island Def Jam Records, which signed her to an exclusive recording contract in May 2002. Later that year she made her label debut with the release of the multi-platinum Charmbracelet.

Evoking a nickname used by those closest to her, The Emancipation of Mimi marked Mariah Carey's tenth studio album with its release in April 2005. Entirely written and co-produced by Carey, and executive produced by Island Def Jam Music Group Chairman Antonio Reid, Mimi revealed an evolved musical sensibility in its tracks and a sophisticated new look on its cover. The album earned three Grammys from eight nominations across multiple categories, following a string of wins at the Vibe Awards, the American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards.

Apart from her musical achievements, Mariah Carey has generously donated her time and energy to a range of philanthropic causes near to her heart. They include Save the Music, The National Adoption Center and The Make-A-Wish Foundation, which recently bestowed its 2006 Wish Icon Award upon her, permanently rechristening it the Mariah Carey Wish Icon Award. Her active involvement with the Fresh Air Fund resulted in Camp Mariah, the Fund's first camp named in honor of an individual. Through this prism, Mariah Carey's legacy transcends the music industry to leave an indelible imprint upon the world at large.

Notes
Australia is, in my opinion, one of her biggest markets. She was a catalog heavily certified, with certain exception, and three #1 albums.

-Although some certifications are now old, I don't know if many albums are ready for a further platinum but they all shipped further thousands which boost her total sales.

she's this immovable monument in america.

She's got great chart runs-if not enough sales and i think it matters when it comes to measuring the legends against each other.

Her airplay hits, chart achievements are just incredible.

Someone(stevvy from Ukmix) said that Rihanna is the one who's gonna surpass the beatles, not Mimi.

That just made worry a bit.But just for a bit.But then,I realised the vast difference which can never be spanned.

Most #1s this decade by a female artist or not,it's NO JOKE to even surpass Michael Jackson's no 1s hits...

Ask Billboard: Madonna vs. Whitney vs. Mariah

This e-mail is a follow up to last week's entry from Neil Massey, who asked about album sales of Whitney Houston and Madonna. I'm curious as to how Mariah Carey stacks up against her two fellow superstars. I know Madonna and Houston began their careers earlier than Carey, but Carey has been very productive with her albums, especially in the '90s. —Leo del Castillo - Baguio City, Philippines

Bill Trust of Ask Billboard replies:

Accounting for certain complexities in how soundtracks are categorized by each source, Madonna's totals top Houston's. As noted last week, according to the RIAA, Madonna ranks 15th all-time with 63.5 million units certified. Houston places 20th with 54 million.

According to Nielsen SoundScan - whose data begins in 1991, after the two stars had begun their careers - album sales since that year stand at 26,347,000 for Madonna and 23,786,000 for Houston (again, including soundtrack sets such as "The Bodyguard," which is officially considered a soundtrack to Nielsen SoundScan).

With Madonna and Houston having head starts in the '80s over Carey, who arrived with the release of her self-titled debut collection in 1990, how does the lattermost artist fare against the other two? Like last week, let's compare using figures from both the RIAA (where longevity gives a potential edge to Madonna and Houston) and Nielsen SoundScan, where a span of 1991 to date covers a period in which all three performers have actively released product.

The RIAA places Carey just one spot below Madonna, in 16th place among all artists with 62.5 million units certified. So, per the RIAA, it's Madonna (63.5 million), Carey (62.5) and Houston (54) in this comparison.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey is the clear winner by a wide margin, actually topping the total album sales - again, since 1991 - of Madonna and Houston combined. Carey's sum stands at 51,833,000.

Here is a look at Mariah Carey's top-selling albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

7,556,000, "Daydream" (1995)
7,189,000, "Music Box" (1993)
5,912,000, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (2005)
4,993,000, "Merry Christmas" (1994)
4,845,000, "Mariah Carey (1990)
3,719,000, "Butterfly" (1997)
3,703,000, "#1's" (1998)
3,584,000, "Emotions" (1991)
2.946,000, "Rainbow" (1999)
2,731,000, "MTV Unplugged EP" (1992)

Again, the numbers will change in upcoming weeks, as all three stars will serve up new product and add to their extraordinary sales totals. Houston's "I Look to You" is due Aug. 25, while on Sept. 29, Madonna releases the best-of collection "Celebration" and Carey offers "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."

Her most impressive sales total is probably Mariah Carey, which has sold over 9.1m copies. Obviously, Music Box has its 10m shipments RIAA award, but its sales are not that much. For the record, here are Mariah's Sony BMG Record Club Sales:

39. MARIAH CAREY - #1's (SONY) (1.00 million units)
65. MARIAH CAREY - DAYDREAM (SONY) (848,000 units)
76. MARIAH CAREY - MUSIC BOX (SONY) (735,000 units)
93. MARIAH CAREY - RAINBOW (SONY) (443,000 units)

The first number is where she ranks in the all time top 100 selling BMG club albums. To those that have researched, there were two big record club sellers during the 90's, and they were Sony BMG and Colombia House. Mariah always reportedly sold a bit more at Colombia House with each release, but their figures have never leaked to my knowledge. Anyway, Colombia House was a smaller record club than BMG overall. If we add Carey's BMG sales to her Soundscan sales:

8,404,000, "Daydream" (1995) (10xP)
7,924,000, "Music Box" (1993) (10xP)
4,703,000, "#1's" (1998) (5xP)
3,389,000, "Rainbow" (1999) (3xP)

Her two highest certified albums are way overshipped. Even if we factor in Colombia House figures, which are likely to be less than a million copies apiece, Mariah is very overcertfied in the USA. And so her RIAA grand total, whilst being incredibly impressive, is not accurate of her actual sales.

DIVA DOMINANCE, ROUND 3

Hi Gary,

I have found your recent analysis of album sales for Madonna, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to be very interesting. If you look at the statistics of singles sales, as opposed to those of albums, who leads then?

I would guess that Madonna would have definitely had the most singles released by a wide margin, but that Whitney and Mariah have both had some huge selling-singles in the U.S.

Many thanks,

Robert Cooper
London, United Kingdom

Hi Robert,

Our discussion of albums sales of three of music biggest female stars has certainly prompted many e-mails and reader comments. Yours is the first, however, to inquire about singles sales.

Again, before we run the numbers, a major point to remember: sales data for Nielsen SoundScan dates to 1991. So, any singles released by Madonna and Houston in the '80s (or by Carey in 1990) only show sales since 1991 in SoundScan's database. We can only guess at the number of singles that Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," for example, actually sold while they were current hits in the '80s.

Still, the 18-year span of SoundScan data is a hefty sample size, and Madonna, Houston and Carey have all released material in that stretch.

Ultimately, all we can do is present the figures and explain as clearly as possible the parameters of each statistic cited.

With that in mind, here are the singles sales totals for each artist. Nielsen SoundScan separates totals for physical singles from digital tracks, so we'll present the sums of both configurations:

Physical singles:
17,172,000, Mariah Carey
14,744,000, Whitney Houston
10,554,000, Madonna

Digital tracks:
11,120,000, Mariah Carey
10,307,000, Madonna
3,320,000, Whitney Houston

Carey, thus, leads in both categories, while Houston has sold more physical (CD, cassette) singles than Madonna since 1991. Madonna, however, has moved a significantly higher number of digital tracks in that span than Houston, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That should not come as a surprise, as Madonna has been more prevalent on radio than Houston this decade, when digital sales overtook those of physical singles. (Since 2000, Madonna has logged nine top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 vs. Houston's two).

What are the biggest-selling hits for each artist?

Whitney Houston
Physical single: "I Will Always Love You," 4,591,000
Digital track: "I Will Always Love You," 575,000

Mariah Carey
Physical single: "One Sweet Day" (& Boyz II Men), 2,334,000
Digital track: "All I Want for Christmas Is You," 1,156,000

Madonna
Physical single: "Music," 1,136,000
Digital track: "4 Minutes" (featuring Justin Timberlake), 2,476,000

And, since all three artists are also currently charting with new singles, let's look at the digital sales of each title to date:

Mariah Carey, "Obsessed": 526,000
Madonna, "Celebration": 64,000
Whitney Houston, "I Look to You": 32,000

Want more comparisons of women wielding great power on Billboard charts? Read on.

Hi Gary,

I get what you're saying about the album sales of Carey, Houston and Madonna, but can you please break down the number of albums released by each artist, so people can understand that, yes, Madonna has sold more albums than Houston, but Madonna and Carey have both offered at least four more albums than Houston. Even with less product, Whitney still has the numbers to be up there in the discussion. In other words, the other two artists have sold more albums, but Whitney perhaps averages better sales per album.

Thanks,

John Harris
Seattle, Washington

Hi John,

Interesting angle. Let's count studio albums, soundtracks, holiday sets and greatest hits/remix collections that have charted on the Billboard 200 in the SoundScan era (1991 to date) to come up with an average sales sum for each.

Since 1991, Carey has released eight studio albums, one soundtrack, one holiday set and four greatest hits/remix collections (14 total).

Madonna's count stands as such: seven studio albums, two soundtracks and three greatest hits/remix collections (12 total).

And, Houston's: two studio albums, two soundtracks, one holiday set and one greatest hits/remix collections (six total).

Tallying the totals, here is the average sales number for each artist's Billboard 200 charted studio, soundtrack, holiday and greatest hits/remix efforts in the SoundScan era:

Whitney Houston: 3,308,000
Mariah Carey: 3,151,000
Madonna: 1,645,000

Here, Houston is tops - and averaging even 1.6 million in sales per album over almost two decades is no small feat for any artist. Among the three performers, Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack is the only set to pass 10 million in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, since 1991. The album has sold 11,808,000 copies.

I wonder what the sales per album comparison would look like if they took Mariah's "The Remixes" out of the equation.

New Mariah Carey million selling figures from Billboard's Q&A:

Mariah Carey is once again mentioned in Billboard’s Q & A this week:

Question: Hey Gary! How’s everything?

In the last Ask Billboard column, you wrote that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is Mariah’s biggest-selling digital song, but I had recently accessed the sales for almost all her singles, and there were at least two that sold more: “We Belong Together” and “Touch My Body.” Maybe the numbers you cited did not account for remixes of each of the latter two titles?

Thank you for the work you do on the column. I love reading about Nielsen SoundScan figures. You’ve been providing much information, with precise numbers. I really appreciate that and had to let you know!

Have a nice week!

Vagner Coser
Bento Goncalves, Brasil

In response Billboard writes:

Answer: Thanks very much Vagner.

You are correct. I used the numbers of Carey’s top individual tracks, as opposed to songs (combining all versions of each title). When adding up all tracks, Carey’s top-selling downloaded songs, according to Nielsen SoundScan, rank as follows:

1,361,000, “Touch My Body”
1,253,000, “We Belong Together”
1,235,000, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

Thanks for the catch. And, with Labor Day weekend upon us in the U.S., the holiday season is fast approaching. That will give an edge to “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in the coming weeks and perhaps push it to the top in the tight race among Carey’s best-selling digital songs.

Australia is, in my opinion, one of her biggest markets. She was a catalog heavily certified, with certain exception, and three #1 albums.

-Although some certifications are now old, I don't know if many albums are ready for a further platinum but they all shipped further thousands which boost her total sales.

This is to give an indication of just how 'in tatters' her catalogue is. She represents the typical 90's legend - same situation for Celine, Shania, Alanis, Backstreet Boys, Christina, Britney ... Unsurprisingly, her biggest seller is her Seasonal Merry Christmas CD

Japan:

Her success in Japan is well documented; over 18m albums sold there (including imports). What we don't read much about though, is her singles success there! Well these are the singles that Mariah charted on the Oricon Singles Chart during the 90's and early 00's:

The Emancipation of Mimi marked a return to popularity for Miss Carey. Especially in the UK, where she had suffered from a string of flops. Her prominent return to the UK music scene saw her TEOM album garner double-platinum status for shipments in excess of 600,000...It represented her biggest sales since Daydream I believe which has shipped close to a million copies in the UK

E=MC²: 1.250.000
The Ballads: 100.000+

Pretty staggering. And just imagine that her shipments are at about 64,000,000 albums. 8-)

Your sales exclude her club sales, which would take her total real sales soaring above 60m

AyuM

Oh, I see. ;)

Wayne

Her club sales should be added onto her Soundscan sales to work out her actual over the counter US sales. Her biggest BMG club sellers are:

39. MARIAH CAREY - #1's (SONY) (1.00 million units)
65. MARIAH CAREY - DAYDREAM (SONY) (848,000 units)
76. MARIAH CAREY - MUSIC BOX (SONY) (735,000 units)
93. MARIAH CAREY - RAINBOW (SONY) (443,000 units)

The first number represents the album's place in BMG's all-time list. Mariah was reportedly a bigger seller at Colombia House (the other big US club seller). But Colombia have never released an official list of their biggest sellers

'Together' Forever
From this week's Ask Billboard:

According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), which electronically monitors radio stations in more than 140 U.S. markets and provides the data that powers Billboard's radio airplay charts, "We Belong Together" has been played 743,758 times through Wednesday (March 24).

I asked BDS Director of Data Services Adam Foster how that sum stacks up against other hit songs released five years ago.

Here is what Adam found:

"We Belong Together" began a 10-week run at No. 1 on the Pop Songs chart for the week of July 2, 2005. Here are the to-date detection totals at BDS-monitored U.S. terrestrial radio stations for Carey's smash and the other songs that were in the top 10 (in order) that week:

All-Format To-Date Plays, Artist, Title
743,758, Mariah Carey, "We Belong Together"
399,636, Gwen Stefani, "Hollaback Girl"
513,149, Kelly Clarkson, "Behind These Hazel Eyes"
226,340, the Black Eyed Peas, "Don't Phunk With My Heart"
160,319, Will Smith, "Switch"
279,099, Ciara featuring Ludacris, "Oh"
374,941, 3 Doors Down, "Let Me Go"
358,332, Papa Roach, "Scars"
244,448, 50 Cent, "Just a Lil Bit"
356,973, the Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes, "Don't Cha"

The total for "We Belong Together" is more 200,000 plays higher than its closest title ("Behind These Hazel Eyes") and twice the to-date average of the rest of that week's top 10 (323,693).

Not surprisingly, and even though it wasn't released until halfway through the decade, "We Belong Together" earned the honor of top title of the 2000s on the Billboard Hot 100 (a feat Carey proudly touted to the audience when I saw her in concert in January).

It's rare for an artist to top both Adult Pop and Adult Contemporary charts concurrently even with one hit. Here is a look at the 13 titles - of 100 Adult Pop Songs No. 1s and 95 Adult Contemporary leaders (29 of which led both lists) since March 16, 1996, when the former chart bowed - so ubiquitous at the height of their popularity that they monopolized the summits of both surveys simultaneously:

Year, Title, Artist, Simultaneous Weeks at No. 1
1996, "One Sweet Day," Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1
1996, "Because You Lou Loved Me," Celine Dion, 12
1996, "Change the World," Eric Clapton, 7
1997, "You Were Meant for Me," Jewel, 1
1997, "Sunny Came Home," Shawn Colvin, 1
1999, "Angel," Sarah McLachlan, 3
2000, "Breathe," Faith Hill, 1
2001, "Only Time," Enya, 3
2006, "You're Beautiful," James Blunt, 3
2006, "Bad Day," Daniel Powter, 7
2007, "Big Girls Don't Cry," Fergie, 2
2008, "Bubbly," Colbie Caillat, 3
2010, "Need You Now," Lady Antebellum, 8

Generally, pop/rock songs break first at Adult Pop before AC: 24 of the 29 shared Adult Pop Songs and Adult Contemporary No. 1s have held sway first at the former format before leading the more conservative adult contemporary genre. Record labels reinforce the pattern by promoting most songs with hit potential at both formats first to adult pop reporters.

Who are the most successful female R&B artists all-time, in terms of U.S. album sales? Here are the women with the most units certified, according to the RIAA:

63 million, Mariah Carey
--
55 million, Whitney Houston
26 million, Janet Jackson
19.5 million, Toni Braxton
18 million, Mary J. Blige
15 million, Alicia Keys
13.5 million, Natalie Cole
12 million, Anita Baker
10.5 million, Brandy

^ I think it's safe to say Mariah will be ahead for a very long time. Whitney won't pose a challenge and the rest are too far behind.

Whitney could only beat her if she released three more albums that sell over three-million copies and Mariah will be releasing albums aswell in this time.

If Whitney didn't have the drug problem, she WOULD be infront of Mariah.

HeatSeeker
09-11-2010, 09:46 AM
Hmm, it's all speculation. It's like saying Mariah would have outsold Celine by now if she had released AC/Pop albums instead of R&B - it's just not easy to say because times change.

Honestly, I don't think Whitney, at 47 with her voice so fragile and her live performances under such scrutiny, would be able to outdo Mariah even if she released more albums. She beat Mariah's biggest flop to date but needed a 7-year absence to do it.

GIMME MORE: Since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking U.S. album sales in 1991, Spears ranks as the 15th-best-selling album artist, with 31.5 million units sold. Among women, her album sales are the fourth-best, trailing only the sums of Mariah Carey (No. 3, 52.6 million), Celine Dion (No. 5, 51.1 million) and Shania Twain (No. 12, 33.9 million)

That wasn't my point; my point was that even including some of Memoirs sales, Celine managed to keep pace with Carey, despite having no new releases. Also, Celine's total doesn't include her live CD/DVD of Taking Chances which has sold 65,000+ copies but charted as a DVD.

Anyway, Carey FTW! :cheer:

"Oh Santa" debuts @ #1 on Billboard's Holiday Digital Songs chart

The singer builds anticipation for "Merry Christmas II You," due Nov. 2, with first single "Oh Santa!," which debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's new Holiday Digital Songs chart (one position above her original version of "All I Want for Christmas Is You"). The follow-up album to 1994's "Merry Christmas" includes a duet with Carey's mother, Patricia.

I think its amazing that she's had over 20 singles sell 100k+ - that is some real awesome streak there. Her top 20 spans 1990-2005, demonstrating some great longevity.

I think All I Want... will sell again this year, perhaps in the region of 60-70k, keeping in line with previous years. This is what the track has sold over the last three years in the UK:

2007: 75,546
2008: 57,220

Mariah Carey's desire for a 19th #1 to equal the Beatles record might just remain a figment of desire for all eternity. Now their catalogue has been made available on iTunes, the Beatles are charting left right and center - they currently have 131 entries inside of the iTunes top 1000!

Adam asked an excellent question about Metallica and how their sales compare to Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Alas, the other three bands aren't listed in Nielsen/SoundScan's top 200 acts, so their tallies aren't readily available. But as a consolation, I will tell Adam that Metallica is just 318K behind Mariah Carey on the list. That's all they need to move into third place since 1991.

A reader asked about Mariah Carey's #1s (3,745,000), Charmbracelet (1,157,000) and Carey's digital song Without You (122K).

Derek F. asked about Celine Dion's These Are Special Times (5,151,000) and her songs Don't Save It All For Christmas Day (17K) and O Holy Night (128K).

Merry Christmas everybody.

Mariah Carey is officially the third highest selling artist of December at iTunes Australia - by adding the sales of all songs, albums and videos. Mariah is only behind Glee and Pink. She’s ahead of Guy Sebastian, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Bruno Mars, Ke$ha and The Black Eyed Peas (who round out the top 10).

Here are the stats (please remember that, as Christmas approaches, she’s only GAINING in sales, so this may change by tomorow for the better):

- Mariah currently has three songs in the iTunes chart (2 versions of A I Want For Christmas Is You and Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town)
- 2 albums in the top 15
- 3 albums in the top 100
- 2 albums in the Pop albums chart
- 2 albums in the R&B album chart
- 4 albums on the Holiday Chart
- 2 videos in the Video Chart
- Over twenty songs on the Holiday Singles Chart
- Credited for four charting Holiday songs as a songwriter
- Plus 42 of her songs have achieved at least 100 sales in the last week (from Honey, to When You Believe, to Hero, to We Belong Together).

Rising 14-6, "Born" registers the highest second-week Pop Songs rank since Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" rocketed 12-4 in its second frame. "Born" likewise trails only "Dreamlover" for highest debut in the chart's archives.

Notably, "Born" bowed after just three days of airplay. With its second-week advance, the song has totaled 11,415 plays in its first 10 days of availability.

"Dreamlover," however, fell shy of reaching Pop Songs after its first week at radio. While the song logged 368 plays in its first week (ending Aug. 7, 1993), it did not debut until the following week, when it increased by 429% to 1,945 plays.

(The Pop Songs panel comprised 69 reporters at the time "Dreamlover" charted. As of this week, 129 stations contribute to the survey, allowing for significantly higher present-day weekly airplay sums).

Mariah has ALL of the old Billboard records.

Christmas has arrived a little early this year, with the first of 2010’s seasonal songs, Mistletoe by Justin Bieber debuting at number 21 (16,005 sales) nine whole weeks before the big day. Bieber’s seventh Top 40 hit single, it is taken from his upcoming album of seasonal songs, Under The Mistletoe is the most premature Christmas hit since 1956, when The Goons reached number four with I’m Walking Backwards For Christmas in July. Of course, the best way to measure how ‘Christmassy’ record buyers are feeling is to monitor the sales of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You. A hardy annual since the advent of the download era, the track invariably reaches its peak (natch) just before Christmas but ahead of that its sales increase week-on-week as the great day nears. It has already increased sales 10 weeks in a row, improving 52.30% week-on-week to 463 last week. It also answers the question ‘when do consumers feel least Christmassy?’. Perhaps surprisingly it is not in the sultry days of summer that punters are least likely to buy it – in each of the last three years it has reached its nadir in week 14, in April. With 750,454 copies sold since its original 1994 release, All I Want For Christmas Is You will likely pass the million sales mark in three or four years – though it does face competition from here on with a new version cut by the aforementioned Justin Bieber in collaboration with Carey for Under The Mistletoe.

Updated UK sales of some 750,454

Love that they used her song as a measure, it really is THE perennial hit of the past 20 years <3

Also it's at 1.92 million downloads in the US and will cross the 2 million mark--her first hit to do so--this year. It's currently #487 on US iTunes.
