Probably the number one touring act in the world, their current tour is set to break box-office records for both total $$$ grossed and tickets sold. The most attended tour of all time belongs to The Rolling Stones (6.5m to their Voodoo Lounge Tour I believe). U2 are set to play to around that same number (if they add a couple of shows they'll smash it) and U2 are set to smash the Stones $558m gross for their A Bigger Bang World Tour with this 360 tour set to take in over $700 WW.

Here are their grosses so far:

Camp Nou Barcelona (June 30 & July 2)
182,055 / 182,055 (100%)
$19,825,497

San Siro (July 7, 8)
Milan
153,806 / 153,806 (100%)
$15,168,799

Stade de France (July 11, 12)
Paris 186,544 / 186,544 (100%)
$20,902,760

Stade Charles Erhmann July 15, 2009
Nice 55,641 / 55,641 (100%)
$6,261,208

Olympic Stadium July 18, 2009
Berlin 88,265 / 88,265 (100%)
$9,169,830

= $71,328,094 + 100% sell outs on every show played so far

Very impressive the Rose Bowl gig was the biggest attended gig ever in the USA

U2's Rose Bowl Show Breaks Attendance Record
Billboard, October 30, 2009
By: Bob Allen

It took 22 years but U2 has broken its own attendance record for the best-attended single concert performance at a U.S. venue by one headliner.

The band's 360 Tour played the Pasadena, Calif. Rose Bowl on Oct. 25 to a sellout crowd of 97,014 -- the highest attendance on record for one U.S. show by a single headliner based on box office totals reported to Billboard.

The old record was set on Sept. 25, 1987 at the now-demolished John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia with a crowd of 86,145 in attendance for the band's Joshua Tree Tour. This year's Rose Bowl performance grossed more than $9.9 million, considerably more than the 1987 Philly show which brought in a mere $1.5 million in ticket sales.

Among the top five single-concert attendances on record in the U.S., the top three are all U2 performances. The third-highest attendance is also from the band's current tour at its Sept. 29 sellout at the FedExField in Landover, Md with 84,754. Pink Floyd's May 29, 1994 show at the Ohio State University football stadium is in fourth place with 75,250. The Backstreet Boys round out the top five with a sold-out show at the Georgia Dome on Feb. 19, 2000. 73,337 fans filled the Atlanta stadium to see the pop group's Into the Millennium Tour.

U2's Rose Bowl show excelled in gross ticket sales as well as attendance. With $9.96 million grossed, it is the second highest-grossing single U.S. concert by a solo headliner. The concert is second only to the Three Tenors' July 20, 1996 sold-out show at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Rolling Stones make up the rest of this top five list with a Giants Stadium concert of its own on Sept. 15, 2005, a sold-out benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall on March 14, 2006 and an outdoor show at Chicago's Soldier Field on Sept. 10, 2005.

Top Attendance at a U.S. concert by a single headliner:

1. U2 - Rose Bowl; Pasadena, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2009)

Huge numbers for the first 44 shows of the tour!

MONTREAL – It’s confirmed: U2 will play Montreal on July 16.

The band will perform on the polo field at the Montreal Hippodrome, kicking in $3 million for the construction of a temporary open-air stadium to fit 60,000 to 80,000 people.

http://www.ruefrontenac.com/images/stories/photos/novembre09/16/120-440/u2_maquette_440.jpg

It is the only date for which U2 is not performing in a pre-existing stadium, not to mention fronting the cost of building one.

“It’s unprecedented,” said Jacques Aubé, vice-president and general manager of promoter Gillett Entertainment Group.

“It’s historic. It will be the biggest paid show in an open-air stadium in Montreal.

“After the concert, the stadium will be demolished and (the site) will become a real estate project.”

The fact that the band is building a new venue to play here is a testament to its love of Montreal, Aubé said.

But it’s also a testament to the grand scale on which a monolithic rock band such as U2 can afford to operate. Tossing in $3 million to build a stadium for a night (or maybe two – don’t discount the possibility that a second show could be added once the first one sells out, as happened in Toronto in September) is the privilege of the mighty, and wealthy. But you can bet the band is also getting bang for its buck.

Do the math and it’s easy to see that this is a money-making enterprise. Tickets for the show cost $30 to $250. Average that out to, say, $90 per ticket, with 70,000 tickets sold, and you’ve got a cool $6.3 million.

Comparable-sized shows on U2’s tour have earned between $5 and $7.5 million each in ticket sales, according to Wikipedia, citing Billboard Boxscore for its numbers; the band’s Oct. 28 show before 64,000 people in Vancouver pulled in $5.7 million, according to the site.

That’s not counting beer, food, merchandise and spinoff CD sales. Aubé said the event would inject $10 million into the Montreal economy, not counting revenues from the concert itself.

But while nobody’s working for free here, U2 is apparently doing its best to make this affordable to everyone: 55 per cent of the tickets cost less than $55, Gillett said Monday, and 85 per cent of tickets will cost $95 or less.

This despite the fact that 55 per cent of the total show budget is going toward labour costs for the building and dismantling of the site, according to Gillett. That’s a big overhead. (But, it must be noted, if the band adds a second show, that percentage goes down – with the stage already built, there’s a lot more profit coming in.)

The building of the giant stage alone – not counting the $3 million for the Montreal stadium – costs $750,000 in labour per show, according to canoe.ca, which reported that despite all the sellout crowds, U2 didn’t actually begin to pull a profit on the tour until the first North American leg ended last month.

U2 sold out every date on the tour’s first leg, which started June 30 in Barcelona and wrapped in Vancouver, seeing the band play to over 3 million fans in 44 cities and pulling in over $311 million in ticket sales alone.

While it is ostensibly called the 360° tour because of the panoramic view of the stage, the title could also be a reference to the band’s 12-year deal with promoter Live Nation. Live Nation’s 360 deals with Jay-Z and Madonna include ticket sales, merchandise, online revenues, publishing, endorsements, DVD rights and more. But U2’s contract with Live Nation is not technically a 360 deal, as it does not include publishing and the band has retained its label, Universal.

Gillett and Live Nation have been working on the possibility of a Montreal date for months. The biggest problem was finding a venue big enough to host the show (including the 150-foot-wide stage, featuring a massive steel spider-like structure) and complying with U2’s request for an open-air stadium.

The Olympic Stadium’s roof is not retractable; Jean Drapeau Park is too small; even the Hippodrome wasn’t big enough originally, which led to talks of constructing a venue specifically for the event. The temporary stadium will take two months to build and one month to strike.

“C’est assez flyé comme idée,” Aubé said. (Rough translation: “It’s a pretty wild idea.”)

The last time U2 was in town was in November 2005. The band performed two sold-out nights at the Bell Centre, with opening act Arcade Fire.

This is U2’s first North American stadium tour since 1997’s Popmart tour. Apparently Bono and his boys still have something to prove.

U2 performs July 16 at the Hippodrome. Tickets cost $30 to $250 and go on sale Saturday at noon. Call 514-790-2525 or go to www.geg.ca. (http://www.geg.ca./)

Olympic Stadium Prepares for U2 Concerts

published today 04:59 PM (http://www.yle.fi)

A record audience turnout is expected at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium for concerts given by the U2 rock band as part of its “360” world tour. An estimated crowd of 104,000 fans are expected for the two concerts.

The concerts mark the reopening of Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium to the public after recent renovations.
An audience of 52,000 people is expected on both nights, representing an all time record of attendance at the venue.

Previous audience records date from concerts given by the Rolling Stones and Tina Turner each attended by 50,000 fans. Dual concerts given by Bruce Springsteen in 2003 attracted a precise total of 89,856 people.

Back in 1952, over 70,000 attended the Helsinki Olympics at the stadium.
The first U2 fans were already in line outside the stadium on Thursday to catch a glimpse of “the claw”, a steel construction at the heart of the band’s stage set-up.

There were two shows with disappointing attendance - they were Moscow (62,000/80,000) and Istanbul (50,000/80,000). However its not all bad news for the band as three upcoming shows are set to create attendance records. They are Munich with 80 000, Rome with 80 000 and finally Paris with a massive 93 000 - ALL SELLOUTS.

U2 to Snatch 'Biggest Tour Ever' Title This Weekend

by Ray Waddell | Billboard.com avril 08, 2011

http://www.billboard.com/photos/stylus/503056-bono-concent-617-409.jpg

When the doors open Sunday night for U2's second show at Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the band's 360 tour will become the highest grossing tour in history.

In Sao Paulo, U2 360 will pass the $558 million gross mark set by the Rolling Stones for their A Bigger Bang tour of 2005-2007. U2 will go on to shatter the record at about $700 million by the time it wraps in North America July 30 at Magnetic Hill in Moncton, N.B., and when all the numbers come in be recorded in Billboard Boxscore as the biggest trek ever. The tour returns to North America May 21 in Denver.

360 will also have moved more than 7 million tickets to 110 shows, enough to capture the "highest attended tour ever" mantle, as well. The Stones are also the band to vacate that title, as their Voodoo Lounge tour of 1994-1995 had held the attendance record at 6.4 million tickets, according to Boxscore.

Incredible.
