Madonna, the best selling female artist EVER, probably the most famous woman all over the world. She's one of the best selling solo artist EVER, behind only Elvis Prestley and Michael Jackson. She's on the music business from 27 years and she's still at the top in terms of popularity. She's one of the most successfull live artist, together with Celine Dion. She won grammies, she broke records, she wrote books, she made scandals and she sang great pop songs. Now, at the age of 50, she's touring all over Europe, with her Sticky and Sweet tour wich is already the most successfull tour by a female artist EVER. In september she's releasing her final GH compilation with Warner Bros, Celebration. After that, she will release at least 3 new studio albums and she will make 3 big tours in the next 6 years with her new label, LiveNation.
And as she sings in her most recent UK top 10 hits, none's gonna stop her now.
IMPORTANT: Sales that I'm gonna write there are absolutely NOT OFFICIAL. They come from my personal estimations. I worked with helps of other chart expert to get an accurate breakdown of the sales by country.

As for who has sold the most albums since the singers' arrivals, let's use two sources. Because the pair enjoyed major successes prior to the advent of Nielsen SoundScan data in 1991, let's first look at Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) figures, which encompass the spans of both singers' entire extraordinary careers.
According to the RIAA, Madonna holds a slight edge over Houston. Madonna ranks 15th all-time with 63.5 million units certified. Houston places 20th with 54 million. (The Beatles lead with 170 million units certified).
Using Nielsen SoundScan data (again, since 1991), Madonna holds a much wider lead. She has sold 26,347,000 albums, compared to 9,489,000 for Houston. Part of the reason for the discrepancy is that Nielsen SoundScan categorizes 1992's "The Bodyguard" as a soundtrack, while the RIAA considers it a Houston album. It has sold 11,808,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. If we were to add that album's sales to Houston's other efforts, Madonna would still lead, as Houston's sum would be 21,297,000. And, to add further unavoidable confusion, "Waiting to Exhale" (5,100,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan) is considered by both sources to be a soundtrack, while "Evita" (2,000,000) is a soundtrack to SoundScan and a Madonna album for the RIAA. All told, Madonna would still lead even if those sets were included in each artist's totals.

I'm curious as to how Mariah Carey stacks up against her two fellow superstars. I know Madonna and Houston began their careers earlier than Carey, but Carey has been very productive with her albums, especially in the '90s. —Leo del Castillo - Baguio City, Philippines

Accounting for certain complexities in how soundtracks are categorized by each source, Madonna's totals top Houston's. As noted last week, according to the RIAA, Madonna ranks 15th all-time with 63.5 million units certified. Houston places 20th with 54 million.
According to Nielsen SoundScan - whose data begins in 1991, after the two stars had begun their careers - album sales since that year stand at 26,347,000 for Madonna and 23,786,000 for Houston (again, including soundtrack sets such as "The Bodyguard," which is officially considered a soundtrack to Nielsen SoundScan).
With Madonna and Houston having head starts in the '80s over Carey, who arrived with the release of her self-titled debut collection in 1990, how does the lattermost artist fare against the other two? Like last week, let's compare using figures from both the RIAA (where longevity gives a potential edge to Madonna and Houston) and Nielsen SoundScan, where a span of 1991 to date covers a period in which all three performers have actively released product.
The RIAA places Carey just one spot below Madonna, in 16th place among all artists with 62.5 million units certified. So, per the RIAA, it's Madonna (63.5 million), Carey (62.5) and Houston (54) in this comparison.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey is the clear winner by a wide margin, actually topping the total album sales - again, since 1991 - of Madonna and Houston combined. Carey's sum stands at 51,833,000.
Here is a look at Mariah Carey's top-selling albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

I would guess that Madonna would have definitely had the most singles released by a wide margin, but that Whitney and Mariah have both had some huge selling-singles in the U.S.

Our discussion of albums sales of three of music biggest female stars has certainly prompted many e-mails and reader comments. Yours is the first, however, to inquire about singles sales.
Again, before we run the numbers, a major point to remember: sales data for Nielsen SoundScan dates to 1991. So, any singles released by Madonna and Houston in the '80s (or by Carey in 1990) only show sales since 1991 in SoundScan's database. We can only guess at the number of singles that Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," for example, actually sold while they were current hits in the '80s.
Still, the 18-year span of SoundScan data is a hefty sample size, and Madonna, Houston and Carey have all released material in that stretch.
Ultimately, all we can do is present the figures and explain as clearly as possible the parameters of each statistic cited.
With that in mind, here are the singles sales totals for each artist. Nielsen SoundScan separates totals for physical singles from digital tracks, so we'll present the sums of both configurations:
Physical singles:
17,172,000, Mariah Carey
14,744,000, Whitney Houston
10,554,000, Madonna
Digital tracks:
11,120,000, Mariah Carey
10,307,000, Madonna
3,320,000, Whitney Houston
Carey, thus, leads in both categories, while Houston has sold more physical (CD, cassette) singles than Madonna since 1991. Madonna, however, has moved a significantly higher number of digital tracks in that span than Houston, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That should not come as a surprise, as Madonna has been more prevalent on radio than Houston this decade, when digital sales overtook those of physical singles. (Since 2000, Madonna has logged nine top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 vs. Houston's two).
What are the biggest-selling hits for each artist?
Whitney Houston
Physical single: "I Will Always Love You," 4,591,000
Digital track: "I Will Always Love You," 575,000
Mariah Carey
Physical single: "One Sweet Day" (& Boyz II Men), 2,334,000

I get what you're saying about the album sales of Carey, Houston and Madonna, but can you please break down the number of albums released by each artist, so people can understand that, yes, Madonna has sold more albums than Houston, but Madonna and Carey have both offered at least four more albums than Houston. Even with less product, Whitney still has the numbers to be up there in the discussion. In other words, the other two artists have sold more albums, but Whitney perhaps averages better sales per album.

Interesting angle. Let's count studio albums, soundtracks, holiday sets and greatest hits/remix collections that have charted on the Billboard 200 in the SoundScan era (1991 to date) to come up with an average sales sum for each.
Since 1991, Carey has released eight studio albums, one soundtrack, one holiday set and four greatest hits/remix collections (14 total).
Madonna's count stands as such: seven studio albums, two soundtracks and three greatest hits/remix collections (12 total).
And, Houston's: two studio albums, two soundtracks, one holiday set and one greatest hits/remix collections (six total).
Tallying the totals, here is the average sales number for each artist's Billboard 200 charted studio, soundtrack, holiday and greatest hits/remix efforts in the SoundScan era:
Whitney Houston: 3,308,000
Mariah Carey: 3,151,000
Madonna: 1,645,000
Here, Houston is tops - and averaging even 1.6 million in sales per album over almost two decades is no small feat for any artist. Among the three performers, Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack is the only set to pass 10 million in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, since 1991. The album has sold 11,808,000 copies.

Madonna To Set Record With Sticky & Sweet Tour

Madonna's Sticky & Sweet wraps today with the second of two shows in Tel Aviv, Israel Sept. 1-2, putting the lid on what looks to be the second-highest grossing tour of all time.
With a gross of $408 million, Sticky & Sweet is the top-grossing tour by a solo artist of all time, and second only to the Rolling Stones' $558 million Bigger Bang tour of 2005-2007. "She is absolutely one of the great performers of all time," said Arthur Fogel, chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring for Live Nation, producer of Madonna's tours. "That this tour will take its place as the second highest grossing tour in the history of our business says it all."
Since its launch in August 2008, Sticky & Sweet has moved more than 3.5 million fans to 85 shows in 32 countries, according to Live Nation. Madonna set an attendance record for the biggest crowds in history in Zurich, Switzerland, where she drew the largest audience ever for a concert in that country (72,000). According to Live Nation stats, her Gothenburg, Sweden show, seen by 119,000 fans, broke the record for highest grossing multiple shows in the country's history. In Helsinki, Finland, Sticky & Sweet sold more than 85,000 tickets, making it the biggest single show by an artist in history for all of Scandinavia. Other highlights on the tour included stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina (256,000), Santiago, Chile (146,000), Sao Paolo, Brazil (203,000), Tallinn, Estonia (72,000), Warsaw, Poland (79,000), Bucharest, Romania (69,000), and Sofia, Bulgaria (54,000).
Sticky & Sweet broke Madonna's previous record for top solo tour ever. Her Confessions tour was previously tops with a gross of $194 million in 2006, according to Billboard Boxscore. The 2008-2009 tour was the first under Madonna's $120 million, 10-year multi-rights deal with Live Nation.

GET TOGETHER: Perhaps the cowboy hat Madonna wore on the cover of her 2000 album "Music" was a foreshadowing of this week's accomplishment. Madonna joins only two other artists in the history of Billboard charts to collect 40 No. 1s on a survey. The prior two each managed the feat on Country Songs.
Between 1968 and 1986, Conway Twitty sent 40 songs to the top of Country Songs. He first led with "Next in Line" and last reigned with "Desperado Love."
George Strait joined the exclusive 40-No. 1s club when "She Let Herself Go" reached the top of Country Songs in January 2006. He had first held sway with "Fool Hearted Memory" in 1982. He passed Twitty with "Give It Away," his 41st No. 1, in September 2006.
Strait holds the mark for most No. 1s on a Billboard chart. His sum stands at 44, with "River of Love" having become his latest leader in April. He could add a 45th topper as soon as next week: "Living for the Night" holds at No. 2 with a bullet this week.
(While Madonna Louise Ciccone has never appeared on Country Songs, another Madonna has. Madonna Dolan rose to No. 82 with "The Home Team" in 1988).
DEEPER AND DEEPER: If we include Madonna's No. 1s on other current-based, domestic Billboard charts, her chart-topping total swells to a colossal 146 leading entries.

^ Its worth noting that they have been rounded up, almost in every case. For e.g. Hung Up was at nearly 518k in early 2009 - its now been upgraded to 540k (its the one song that is missing from your list, that was featured in the programme that those sales were taken from! :P). Into The Groove had sold nearly 843k up until this year, and has now shot up to 850k. 4 Minutes has also added 25k to its total, quite mysteriously!
Either way, Madonna has sold over 200k catalogue tracks over the last year, so the figures above are almost certainly accurate! Good sales Queen!

Yes, I completely agree. In the UK, there are mainly four big international female sellers of the last two decades when it comes to both albums & singles - Madonna, Celine, Kylie & Whitney. Of the four, Madonna is the only one without a million seller, despite being by far the biggest seller in the country!
Maybe if they re-released the song, an amazing remix came out?

Yes, that's the latest figures (up until September 2010) we have for Madonna's 20 BIGGEST-SELLING UK SINGLES! She has 20 singles that have sold over 300,000 hard copies, which is perhaps the most impressive sales statistic in UK singles chart history, by any act - male, female, or band. Its just an absolutely monumental achievement - I think that off the top of my head, only Michael Jackson will be able to compete with it. What baffles me is that Madonna has never had a UK million seller. I find it perplexing that she's never come even close to it, considering how many hits she's had, and when she put those her hits out (during the late 80's, and 90's when single sales were massive). Still, not to knock the Queen of Pop, the total for her top 20 biggest sellers is 10,375,000 copies. And this is JUST a top 20 - bear in mind that Madonna has impacted the UK singles chart (the top 75) nearly 70 times!! :shocked:

My first advice to you is not to cross reference your sources, especially when trying to estimate a global sales estimate; the IFPI deal primarily in shipments, whereas the UWC are an unofficial site that make [sometimes] educated guesses at worldwide sales, based on a number of nations, and the extrapolation of the rest of the world chart positions. Not always the best way to estimate sales.
Anyway, although the IFPI estimated global shipments of over 6m for Confessions during 2005, the UWC [the source that you obviously want to use] estimated that global sales of Confessions during 2005 were a little over 4m [4,031,000] - see here (http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums-2005.htm). Add that to the year chart of 2006 for Confessions which is 3.4m and you reach a total of around 7.43m.
Madonna's label most recently issued a statement saying that Confessions had shipped 8.5m copies worldwide; that wasn't too long ago, and I'd probably say that Confessions has shipped around that - 8.5-8.75m. 9m at a push :)

I'm quite a pedant when it comes to worldwide sales, and I personally credit Madonna with 105m singles sold and 195m albums worldwide. However, I know that Nichu94 credits Madonna with around 115m singles worldwide and around 200m albums. And his work on Madonna is much more comprehensive than mine :)

American life sold less than Hard candy and has a Platinum certification.
Back when American Life was released, a label shipped on average 3-4 times what the opening week sale was. Since about 2007/2008, a label ships double what the opening week projection is. So Hard Candy's initial shipment would've around 600,000 copies - a GOLD cert. It definitely hasn't shipped 1m copies in the US, probably around 775,000-800,000.

Yes, I agree, Hard Candy really let her down. If she wants another big seller, she needs to get the USA market back on her side. The US really doesn't like her anymore

Unfortunately, its true. But I think this reality is starting changing. HC, a dissapointent album, sold more than AL in the USA. Madonna is very prejudicate for her hard critics about American Government. Billboard has published an article saying this in 2006.
I think she cans be a hit maker in the USA now a days. I hope so. The Power of Madonna from Glee had a great impact and sold well.
Maybe her image there is start changing.

Yes, the last number we had for Hard Candy in the UK was 335,523 just under two years ago. It hasn't re-entered the charts at all since leaving the chart during that time frame; I'd estimate that its to date sales are around 360-365,000

Yes, she's also strongly rumoured to be collaborating with Rihanna on this new album. I'm not sure that I'd like that; however, it'd do wonders for her [ever] decreasing appeal to the American market!
I dread to think what Hard Candy would've sold had Justin Timberlake not featured on its dire lead single, 4 Minutes! Even less than 750,000!

Well, I think it could be a great collaboration with Rihanna if Madonna works with a good concept and a good song. Rihanna has a think that I like very much: she is edge.
Madonna too. So, if they could put it together, will reveals a great work.
Another think that is crucial: Madonna needs to create epic videos again.
So this is it: great song, great conception, great video and their strong personalities.
Madonna must give her fans something like that.

Could you please rank her most-played tracks on radio over the years, according to BDS? (I understand that the number of monitored stations has increased over time, and that older songs might've had more time to build up a lead over more recent releases, but this would be nice information to know, nonetheless).
