She is (was?) the Queen of the USA when it came to music - she's the most successful American act of the last two decades and one of the most successful solo artists of all-time, bar NONE. At one point in her career, she was topping EVERY major album chart around the world and was selling albums by the millions. She experienced a commercial decline in 1999, beginning with Rainbow, and lasting until 2005, when The Emancipation Of Mimi was released. The album brought Carey back to the forefront of popular culture, amassing totally worldwide shipments of over 9m copies - once again, Carey was one of the biggest stars in the world. Then came E=MC2; beginning with record opening week sales of 463,000 copies, the album marked a watershed in Carey's career - many fans predicted big things for her. On top of the number one selling album, she'd register her 18th number one single with Touch My Body....what could possibly go wrong? Well everything, it seems! Her follow up singles performed terribly and the album itself, whilst selling quite well, was still a massive under-performance and not what people predicted. The era was cast aside, and a new album was in the works - some predicted that it was too early for Carey to release. Memoirs saw its release 4 weeks ago, and to call it a flop would be an understatement - its perhaps the most catastrophic album showing of not only her career, but of this decade by a major recording artist, with less than 500,000 copies sold worldwide in a month.

The Memoirs remix album is coming out soon - really push that album to drive total sales album

But I'd be happy with Option 1 too.

I love Memoirs but it's not doing well at all :(

Go into semi-retirement and stay out of the limelight for a year or two

I picked other because I do feel she should leave the limelight for a few years BUT I think she should maybe do another GOOD film after Precious and release ONE song from the soundtrack.

I am talking over a 3 year period here, so she has time to actually put together a super strong album. Also if she can prove she has acting chops then she with garner respect, which I feel she is losing at the moment due to the whole Eminem thing and that she is still prancing around in her underwear.

The general concensus with people that I know is that she is annoying and predictable. All the other embarrassing things like spray painting abs on her belly doesn't help.

She needs to give people a break from her so there is an appetite for her from the general public. I mean it worked for Whitney.

She also needs to stop pushing so hard to be relevent, good music is good music it will sell regardless. She should remember that.

WHAT SHOULD MARIAH CAREY DO NEXT?

Well she seems to be in this position, once more, and two years later! So lets ask the question again.

She's just released a semi-successful holiday album - the fourth most successful such release of last year in the USA, selling some 420,000 copies - and has now gone off to have her twin babies! Aww!

Consider these questions:

When should she make her return? Would a 2011 return be too soon? How would she fare with a return in a few years?
What musical direction should she take, upon her return? Pop, R&B, dance, jazz, motown?
Should she try and reciprocate formula's she's used in the past? (i.e. should see release two singles prior to the album, should she release a buzz single to test the waters etc)
Who would you like to see Mariah work with? Would you like to see her duet with any other major superstar forces in music?

Thoughts/opinions!

Go into a semi-retirement for a few years, take care of the babies, come back rejuvenated and dominate the music charts yet again. She should just enjoy her time with the babies once they are born and not rush into the studio, while at the same time, she should rest her vocal chords and seriously take care of them. Yes, I'd like a new album with something similar to Daydream/E=MC2, but she should be able to perform them live as well. Also, let this era of dance tunes and electro-pop get passe and come out with a classy album.

I fear that as she gets older she'll be less relevant as the years go by.
Apart from Madonna, when did someone over 40 last have a hit single?
Not to mention that her last 2 albums didn't do much outside America and even in America they underperformed...

Well if rumours are to be believed, and Mariah's own mouth, then she's releasing a new album this year! :o

I adore Mariah and would love another album of course, but for the sake of flopping - give it a while please Maz.

Well now that she's going back to Sony, maybe another deep personal album after she has her twins. I'm thinking some jazz duets or something. idk.
