IDJ Chairman L.A. Reid hosted a listening party for Mariah's new album Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel (in stores Sept. 15th) earlier today in New York and Essence magazine was there live-tweeting from the scene.

Getting another early listen at Mariah Carey's new album with LA Reid

The Dream, Tricky and Mariah wrote everything on the album...nice.

first four Mariah songs sound like hits to us... loving "H.A.T.E.U."

Okay, Mariah's so long song "Standing Ovation" sounds very Ne-Yoish

The Dream is feeling "Ribbon"...

OMG... Mariah does Journey's "I Wanna Know What Li... oops... "i wanna know what love is" and it sounds AMAZING

Naz just corrected me, that's Foreigner's song but Mariah put her foot it in

From the Twitter posts above, we get a confirmation of Mariah's cover of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" which was first reported by the New York Post in April 2009; and a new song title "Standing Ovation."

I'm anticipating this one... I liked her last 2 albums and almost all her singles. And hearing 'Obsessed' and The-Dream's demo of 'H.A.T.E.U.', I must say I got really excited! 'H.A.T.E.U.' <3333

SONGSTRESS Mariah Carey is famous as a woman who knows what she wants – and usually gets it.
So when she made Liverpool DJ Anton Powers an offer, there was really no way he could refuse.

The Juice FM and club favourite is one of the hottest properties in the country for remixes, in demand by huge names including The Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Alesha Dixon and The Saturdays.
But, he tells Insider, he wasn’t taking on any new Cahill remixes so he could concentrate on his own tracks.

“Then I got a call from our manager, Jon Barlow, late on a Saturday night saying Mariah Carey’s label had called asking for us to remix her new single,” explains Anton.

“Obviously I couldn’t say no to her, the only issue was that if she didn’t like the mix, it wouldn’t get used and we wouldn’t get paid!

“So we did the mix, sent it back to them, thankfully she liked it but said she wanted to redo the vocals to fit our mix. She went back in the studio (unfortunately in the USA and not with us) and re-did the vocals so it fits better on our mix, then she gave it the green light.”

The result, Obsessed, is due out next month but ECHO DJ of the Year Anton’s already been told that it’s the label’s favourite remix of the year.

A diva? Insider thinks not.

The Monetization of Mimi: Mariah CD to Have Ads

As music sales continue to drop like they're not so hot throughout the industry, Island Def Jam Music Group is jamming on a new business model: integrating brands into artists' CD booklets.

The first deal, created for the Mariah Carey release Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on Sept. 15, is a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. Providing the experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.

The mini magazine contains Mariah-centric editorial ("VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life," "Amazing Closet," "Recording Rituals") and lifestyle advertising along with lyrics and other CD booklet elements. Elle contributed the editorial and designed the layout.

The booklets were created for the first run of U.S. CDs (1 million) and the first 500,000 overseas, said Jeff Straughn, svp-strategic marketing for Island Def Jam Music Group. It will also be available in a digital format for those who buy music online. A condensed version of the Mariah mag, sans the 14 pages of CD-specific material, will be inserted into 500,000 subscription copies of Elle's October issue, which arrives mid-September.

"The idea was really simple thinking: 'We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,'" said Antonio "L.A." Reid, chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, a unit of Universal Music Group. "My artists have substantial circulation—when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that's a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren't as successful as those records."

Carey was "very open" to the concept when Reid showed her a mock-up of the booklet in a magazine format that included brand imagery synonymous with her lifestyle. "I wouldn't want to do Mariah Carey and Comet abrasive cleaner," Reid said, laughing. "I wanted things that really reflected her taste."

Reid said the program was unprecedented. Terry Dry, president of Los Angeles-based digital-word-of-mouth marketing agency Fanscape, agreed, saying that the CD booklet advertising is a first, though he wouldn't be surprised if more labels look into doing the same thing: "Hollywood Records [Disney], I know they love to monetize all over the place for something like a Jonas Brothers record. Open any rap record and a couple of inserts will come flying out, usually for a business the artist is a part of. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 Cent had a Vitaminwater thing."

Labels are looking for ways to eke out extra bucks, borrow equity and cut costs anywhere they can today. Year-to-date album sales were down 13.9 percent for the week ending July 19, 2009, compared with the period last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan (227 million units vs. 195.5 million units). Of those 2009 sales, 18.9 percent, or 41.9 million, were digital.

Ad revenues are subsidizing 100 percent of Island Records' costs for the Carey booklet, but label execs also see the alliance as a way to expand distribution at a time when the local music store is becoming as rare as the Beatles' Yesterday and Today LP with the "Butcher" cover.

"We don't have music retailers any more, so a smart consumer products company that understands the value in distributing music is going to restore the vitality of our business," Reid speculated. "If we distribute music properly and if it's done tastefully, it could be a huge profit center for all of us. That is the missing link—we need partnerships."

To underscore the point: At one large retail establishment, partner Elizabeth Arden is allowing the label to cross-promote the release. The CD Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will be merchandised directly outside Walmart's music aisle with Carey's new signature Arden fragrance, Forever, which has its ad on the booklet's back cover. The CD and scent will also be displayed together in the beauty department.

Hong Kong was lucky enough to have a listening event for Mariah Carey’s forthcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

The preview was of only six tracks & was held at Universal Hong Kong for regional marketing staff and media:

‘Obsessed’ - Everyone knows this track…

‘Candy Bling’ - Mariah’s slowest jam to date, I can’t quite think of a song to compare it to…….. *scratches head…..*

‘Standing O’ - Very Mary J. Blige imo, ‘Standing O-O-O-O-O…..’ Another urban/r&b type song.

‘H-A-T-E-U’ - Much much better than the demo leaked, but the overall melody and production is the same and the baby sound is still there.

‘Impossible’ - Another slow ballad…. very Blackstreet… Jodeci references in the lyrics…

‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ - It’s got that whole TTR vibe… breathy 1st chorus, then it’s bring on the choir, but it’s not OTT, alot better than Tina Arena’s rendition imo. But I don’t think it’s gonna have the same impact as ‘Without You’… but who knows…

I didn’t hear any pop songs or upbeat songs as such, didn’t get to hear the Timbaland produced track, nor the other demo. Mariah sings alot in her lower register and the songs above highlight that alot. Although I didn’t hear imo an ‘instant hit’ e.g. WBT (they might be saving those biggies for later)

….Overall, we have a very exciting album that’s coming, the songs I’ve heard have a mid-late 90’s feel to them, this is not neccessarily a bad thing as songs back then were the sh!tz, I’ve got a feeling M.O.A.I.A. will be pure quality.

This album is getting a very lukewarm response...

I didn't expect much...BUT it's only coz NOBODY knows a potential Hit even if it hits you in the face-atleast only if you listen to it once.

I don't think Mariah is dumb. With HER discography, she KNOWS what is Hit and what is not.

P.S. From all the h.a.t.e.u. reviews....i HOPE she doesn't release it...it's just an below average song for a Mariah carey song.

I Want to Know What Love Is is getting rave reviews from the listening party from multiple sources! I cannot wait for this one! It might just be a hit for her in Europe.

Here's a recent review:

So I mentioned yesterday that I was heading off into central London for Mariah Carey’s new album playback session and from the 5 tracks I heard, only two of them I really liked, the rest thought were very average.

The 2 stand out tracks for me were:
Candy Bling - A nice slow smoothed out tune which had The Dream & Tricky Stewart’s sound all over it for those of you who are familiar with their beats. However I can’t see this track being a single, but a wicked album track.

I Want To Know What Love Is - This is Mariah’s cover version of the 80’s Classic originally recorded by Foreigner, this is easily a single and will be a world wide smash!

As for the other tracks I heard, none of them grabbed me at all, in fact some of them actually bored me if I’m honest with you. What we heard was only a few tracks that maybe on the album, but we were told the album is still in the making, so I’m looking forward to hearing more…

Mariah's Slow-Moving 'Angel'

Mariah Carey is said to be scrambling to complete her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. "She's getting very nervous now that Whitney Houston is coming back," said our source. We're told Carey signed with manager Chris Lighty four months ago, but the album still isn't finished. Lighty told Page Six by e-mail, "My management company is dealing with [Mariah's] music, brand extensions and commercial opportunities. We love Mariah."

Carey hasn't had a music manager since splitting with Benny Medina last September and has only released one single -- "Obsessed" -- off the album so far. We tried to get more details from Lighty, but he told us he was "at the beach" and couldn't talk. When we called her p.r. firm, a rep said, "We are no longer working with Mariah."

Mariah Carey | Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel - PunchBowlBlog initial review
By Manny on 10/08/2009

http://is.gd/2aZ1p

The Buzz | Intimate playback of 6 tracks from MC's 12th studio album

The Makeup | Afternoon tea at The Langham Hotel, complete with pink fairy cakes, butterfly and Mariah Carey stencils on the windows and walls

The Hype | 2/5

Butterflies flew on the wall, waiter's served afternoon tea with champagne and pink fairy cakes and had we not been in The Langham Hotel's oh-so-plush Artisan Bar it would be easy to imagine how a Mariah Carey slumber party would look like. Over the top and decadent in equal measures, it proved an apt setting for the unveiling of 6 new tracks from Mariah's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

Unfortunately the cupcakes were the highlight of the afternoon. Sickeningly overproduced RnB masked any venerability the album title unsubtly suggests. MC's vocals continues to prove a bitter disapointment managing to be dull, deep and distant all at the same time. Candy Bling complete with its looping chorus of "back in day when we was in love, but we ain't in love anymore" was almost undecipherable until her ad-libs at the very end, while on H.A.T.E U, her trademark high notes sounded more like a distant whisper.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Standing O draws its inspiration more from a middle aged Sengalese rapper/singer then a VH1 Diva but thankfully it's not all bad. The last track, a surprise cover of Foreigner's smultzy ballad, I Want To Know What Love Is, redeems MC and you can almost see Leona Lewis kicking herself for not having the hindsight to cover it before.

While we we're told that Mariah's still recording more songs the only original track worth keeping from the playback would be Impossible which was head and shoulders above the rest even with the same autotune effect as 90's bands like Jodeci and Blackstreet. In a difficult week that saw Eminem ether her on The Warning, Mariah's willingness to rush out a new record within a year of her last LP seems as questionable as the performance of her new single Obsessed on hubby Nick Cannon's show.

So with tracks as digitally modified as her recent album covers, we would advise MC to spend some more (much needed) time in the studio.

We heard from this Manny before. He does seem abit biased and we've already heard the whistle note in HATE U and its beautiful so

Australia's Rhyme & Reason Mag Previews Memoirs

Rhyme & Reason, Australia's largest and most frequently issued Urban magazine, was this afternoon treated to an exclusive preview of Mariah Carey's 12th studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. A single CD containing six songs from the album was flown in to Sydney from Island Def Jam's New York offices, accompanied by an IDJ representative. Taking every precaution to avoid leaks of Mariah's new material, phones and recording devices were cloaked before the listening session, with the lone CD set to return to New York along with the IDJ representative.

The release of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel has been delayed until September 29th as Mariah continues to write and record material alongside a collaborator who is understood to be a writer she worked with in the earlier part of her career. Along with the six cuts previewed by Rhyme & Reason, an additional five or six songs are expected to round out the album.

Mariah has entrusted much of the album's production duties to Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, while long-time friend and collaborator Jermaine Dupri also makes a return for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, along with hit-maker Carlos "Los DaMystro" McKinney [Usher, R. Kelly, Whitney Houston].

Mariah co-wrote all of the songs previewed, save for "I Want To Know What Love Is" - the remake of Foreigner's chart-topping 1985 single. "I Want To Know What Love Is" is expected to be the album's next single.

While we don't want to give too much away, below is Rhyme & Reason Magazine's brief breakdown of the six songs previewed from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel:

"CANDY BLING"
Credits: Written by Mariah Carey, Carlos McKinney and Terius Nash. Conducted and produced by Los DaMystro for DaMystro Music LLC/Music Line Entertainment, LLC and produced by Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A laidback, mid-tempo track set to finger-snaps. At one point, Mariah makes mention of bringing "ODB back".

"OBSESSED"
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. "Tricky" Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: You should all be familiar with this one...

"H.A.T.E. U"
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. "Tricky" Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A slower-tempo song which has Mariah wanting to square off with a trifling partner; "I can't wait to face you / I can't wait to hate you".

"STANDING O"
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. "Tricky" Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: The "O", of course, stands for "Ovation". This is an unmistakable Dream concoction laid over mid-tempo staccato piano chords and plush synths. The chorus includes Mariah mimicking Dream's signature "oh, oh" vocal punctuations.

"IMPOSSIBLE"
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. "Tricky" Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A woozy, somewhat minimalist slow jam.

"I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS"
Credits: Written by Mick Jones. Produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. "Tricky" Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Big Jim.
Description: Staying true to the original, this piano-lead remake is less an overhaul of the classic 80's hit than it is a modest but impressive update.

Mariah Carey–despite idiotic postings elsewhere–is gearing up for her big new CD release.

Mariah feels so strongly about "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" that she's even re-hired the PR powerhouse that made her second-stage career such a success. She's back with Cindi Berger of PMK HBH. It was Berger who made her "Emancipation of Mimi" the biggest hit of Mariah's career. Smart move.

Of course, that means both Mariah and Whitney Houston are now being repped by the same PR company. PMK's Kristen Foster is handling Whitney with my old pal, Jill Fritzo.

"Memoirs" was scheduled for an August 25th release, then moved to September 15th. Now it's set for September 29th. If the regular Grammy deadline had been in place–September 30th–Mariah would have made it. But the unfortunate early deadline of August 31st cut her off. So she has some slack time to get "Memoirs" just right.

The first single from Mariah's CD will not be "Obsessed"–that was just a summer trifle, and it was a lot of fun. The real first official single is said to be a powerhouse ballad along the lines of "Vision of Love."

SNEEK PEEK! Mariah Carey "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel!"

A lot of people in the media recently got a chance to preview a 6 track sampler of Mariah Carey's new album that label Def Jam have been out & about playing. Well luckily for me an acquaintance of mine was one of those people, and they typed up a short review for me of their thoughts on the songs so I could publish it here. Take a look below.

1 - Candy Bling. By far my favourite. It took me back to the days of Underneath the Stars. Except that this time it is obviously UTS on her terms. So we have more airy notes and no belting - a theme throughout Memoirs. Everyone was loving this track. A lot of heads were nodding round the room.

2 - Obsessed. 'Nuff said. Like the idea that it was just something festive for summer. No matter what I thought this was hot. Really think it's edgy ALTHOUGH if you gave it to Cassie or whoever else it would sound normal. Only because it's Mariah does it sound edgy.

3 - H.A.T.E. U. I feel JD might have wanted to progress or whatever so she picks up with the other producer out there who can give her some mid-tempo summer jamz - The Dream. Didn't like the demo, wasn't a fan of this.

4 - Standing O. Was good. I think it was at this point that I realised something. No matter how hard she tries, like Kylie, she will never be cool. OK, Butterfly era was kinda cool, but really that was it. Let it go. Stop chasing rainbows! But back to the track. I liked this one, it was nice but again very mid-tempo. But very soulful which is something the head of Island Records said about the record.

5 - Impossible. About Nick. Slow jam. Blah.

6 - I Want To Know What Love Is. I liked it and it got a great reception. However there is a really uncomfortable key change mid way where it suddenly goes apeshit and you think the CD is skipping. She should have drawn the single out with another bridge or extra chorus to allow the run up to seem more natural. I guess it's hard when the song is someone else's. But you know she's had big success with rock ballads so there is definitely a formula for her.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS!

Mariah Carey The Perfectionist

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT judge PIERS MORGAN was left exhausted after MARIAH CAREY’s guest appearance on the show - because the singer forced production staff to work around the clock to make sure her “three-minute” appearance was perfect.

Earlier this month (Aug09) the pop superstar appeared on stage during an episode of the hit TV show, which is hosted by her husband Nick Cannon, to belt out her new single Obsessed.
Carey wowed the judging panel - which also includes David Hasselhoff and Sharon Osbourne - with her pre-recorded performance.

But Morgan admits the spectacular rendition came at a price, because Carey had to make sure every tiny detail was perfect before she would let TV bosses air the footage.

She says, “She’s such a perfectionist. We were all in the studio until nearly midnight as she planned her three-minute appearance, right down to the detail of the lighting, sound and camera angles. And work with producers in the editing suite apparently continued to 6am until she was absolutely happy. Mariah has the reputation of a diva. But like most divas - from Piaf to Whitney Houston to Madonna - that’s primarily because she’ll do whatever it takes, however long it takes, to get things as good as they can be.”

Mariah Wants to Know What Love Is: Covers Foreigner
By: Roger Friedman // Tuesday August 18, 2009 // Celebrity, Music

Foreigner’s Mick Jones can start ordering caviar and Champagne again: Mariah Carey is releasing her own gospel-tinged version of his masterwork song, “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

It’s the first “real” single from her new album following the summer release of the witty “Obsessed,” which is also included on “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.” The album and the single hit the world on Sept. 29th.

I heard the Foreigner song yesterday along with all of “Memoirs” and let me tell you: Mariah’s got a hit on her hands along the lines of “Emancipation of Mimi “The hour-long CD is ballad-centric. Written and produced with The Dream and Tricky (I know, but these are their stage names), “Memoirs” boasts a lot of singles. Starting with the Foreigner song is a canny move in these uncertain times. By the time its run is over, a new generation will think “I Want to Know What Love Is” is a Mariah Carey song.

Mick Jones, who wrote it, should start picking out some nice new cars thanks to Carey. The money should come rolling in quickly.

The other songs on the album — these are the titles, although the running order is still being finalized: “Betcha,” “Obsessed,” “H.A.T.E.U.,” “Candy Bling,” “Ribbon,” “Standing O’s.,” “Impossible,” “It’s a Wrap,” “Inseparable,” “Up Out My Face,” “More than Just Friends,” and “Angels Cry.”

Several of these are radio ready. “Angels Cry” is an honest-to-god ballad a la “Vision of Love,” and should be a gigantic success. “Standing O’s” also has potential, as do “H.A.T.E.U.” — which stands for “having a typical emotional upset” — and “Inseparable.”

Def Jam’s L.A. Reid — who previewed the CD for the first time yesterday with a clutch of staffers — is playing with the order, to get it right. But he really can’t go wrong. Carey’s album, is, as they used to say, “what the kids want.” Plus, it’s got stuff for the slightly older crowd. I loved the doo-woppy “It’s a Wrap.” And the Foreigner track is so powerful, it’s going to be everywhere.

Good news, too: no more songs about Eminem. One was plenty.

So, by the end of September we’ll have new CDs from Whitney and from Mariah. They’re each top notch and different from each other enough that their fans should want them both. Maybe we’ll see a return to record stores (we have but a few in Manhattan now) and diva duels on radio if programmers are smart.

Oddly, the report that announced the single — which Carey later posted to her official Web site and her Twitter account — refers to “I Want to Know What Love Is” as the first “real” single from the album. However, Carey’s rep clarified that “Obsessed” is indeed the album’s first single.

Mariah Carey first act announced for Fashion Rocks 2009

Singer Mariah Carey will be performing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October 2009 during the next edition of Fashion Rocks, which promises to combine music and fashion.

Versace, Marc Jacobs and Brazilian beachwear label Lenny are confirmed for the event, scheduled for 23 and October 24 at the Copacabana Palace and the Jockey Club in Rio, respectively.

The announcement was made this Wednesday (13) during a press conference held by Fashion Rocks in the Copacabana Palace. The organizers of the event say that Mariah Carey is only the first musical attraction announced. Other names to be announced in the coming weeks.

“It is difficult to match dates with big bands such as we want, but we are trying,” said the director of the musical part of the event, Christian Lamb, who has led tours of Madonna, Coldplay and Lenny Kravitz.

While other details are being kept under wraps at this time, OI Fashion Rocks, in association with Oi Brazil, promises a stellar list of performers and designers.

PROMOTION! :D

BET Reviews Memoirs

L.A. Reid Unveils Mariah's Memoirs Album
Earlier this week, L.A. Reid held an exclusive album listening event with various members of the press for Mariah Carey's upcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel album, due out on Island Records in late September. The room listened attentively to the tracks that were previewed in L.A.'s candle-lit corner office.

After the album's prelude, Memoirs leads off with MC's first single "Obsessed," which has already reached #1 on BET's "106 & Park" countdown show. But the song is followed by a powerful blend of uptempo dance tracks, mid-tempo R&B jams and heartfelt ballads.

L.A. Reid confirmed that Mariah's second single will be the remake of Foreigner's classic "I Wanna Know What Love Is," where Mariah exercises her vocal range. On other songs, Carey continues to show off her unique talents, singing her heart out on "Angels Cry" and "Ribbon."

Written and produced entirely by Mariah, Tricky and The-Dream, the album's strongest selling point is its musical consistency. The tracks seem to flow into each other nicely, and as usual, Mariah has more than enough potential singles. The writing on songs like "Standing O" will keep all-time Mariah fans happy, while a younger audience will appreciate the down-to-earth rawness of songs like "Up Out My Face" and "It's A Wrap."

For most of the album, Mariah is belting out notes that only she can hit, and by the end of the session, the entire room was applauding her efforts. L.A. thanked the attendees for their time, before insisting that the album was what he believed to be a "classic" ("and I don't say that too often," he said).

Amazon Reviews Memoirs
Imperfections are in the eye of the beholder. You can see them as flaws, or as the very qualities that make us human -- and that make us strive to be better people in search of a perfection that we know we can never fully achieve. In the thirteen songs on her spellbinding new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Mariah Carey explores those aspects of our shared humanity with a rare depth, honesty and open-heartedness. It's one of the strongest statements in her long, distinguished career.

The subject of Memoirs is love at all its stages in our lives. Experiencing it for the first time. Losing it. Remembering its most painful moments, and also its times of greatest innocence and joy. Yearning for it. Learning from it. Growing as a result of its profound power. Finding it again and being grateful for so great a gift. And, finally, being humbled, filled with wonder and elevated by love's mysterious ways. In that sense and more, Memoirs is a full, immensely satisfying journey.

"Each song is like an intimate conversation or entry in a private diary," Carey says about the album. "A lot of the songs reflect specific, different times in my life. Others were inspired by movies, actual events that happened to me, or the stories of friends who told me about experiences that they've gone through." With just one exception, Carey wrote and produced the entire album in collaboration with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. The trio clearly shared an inspired sense of what Memoirs should be. Sinuous grooves and instantly memorable melodies flow from track to track, while the wit and intimacy of the lyrics create the feel of one friend talking to another. As well-defined as each song is, Memoirs plays with the beauty and consistency of a classic, start-to-finish album.

"My main goal was to work with people I could collaborate with without it seeming redundant or stale," Carey says. "In my opinion Tricky is one of the most underrated major producers out there right now. I really enjoyed collaborating with him. And I especially liked writing with The-Dream, basically because we both love having fun with lyrics and melodies, and we're also capable of getting more serious on deeper songs. There is a particular sense of freedom I feel when we write together -- even though I make him stay in the studio all night until he is ready to kill me! LOL!"

Memoirs' first single is the hard-hitting "Obsessed," which is accompanied by a video directed by Brett Ratner (the Rush Hour trilogy) in which Carey plays both the glamorous star and her stalker fan. Like the video, the song's lyrics combine devastating putdowns ("Last man on the Earth still couldn't get this") with humor ("See right through you like you're bathin' in Windex"). The no-nonsense "Up Out My Face" captures a similar caustic mood, dismissing a former lover with the send-off, "When I break, I break, boy." "It's a Wrap" delivers a similar message about the end of an affair: "When it's gone, it's gone." "Standing O," with its irresistible chorus, sardonically applauds a faithless ex for his signature achievement: "You played the one that loved you the most." "Betcha Gon' Know" foresees karmic revenge for a wayward lover, but, once again, the clever lyrics ("Oprah Winfrey whole segment for real, for real / 20/20 Barbara Walters for real, for real") encourage a smile amid the pain.

The ballad "H.A.T.E.U.," meanwhile, finds the singer seeing life in the wake of a breakup and longing for the moment when loss and regret transform into a cleansing anger. But the title of the song doesn't necessarily stand for what you think it might. "H.A.T.E.U. is the first song I wrote for the album," Carey says, "and it stands for Having A Typical Emotional Upset."

Always a brilliant technical singer with an extraordinary vocal range, Carey rises to new heights on that track. "I sing a recurring melody in the upper register of my voice; it's not an ad-lib, but an integral part of the song's hook," she says. "That's not something I've done before, and when listening back to it, it reminded me of how Minnie Riperton used her upper register on her hit song `Lovin' You.' I thought how ironic that her song was called `Lovin' You' and my song is called, 'H.A.T.E.U.' - and both use that upper `whistle register' as a major part of the melody. So it's sort of an homage to Minnie Riperton, a tribute to her since she has been so influential in my singing style."

On a tender note, the wistful "Candy Bling" beautifully evokes the blissful realm of young love ("Anklets, name plates that you gave to me/Sweet tarts, ring pops had that candy bling/And you were my world"), while "Inseparable" aches for a love that went wrong for reasons that seem impossible to comprehend. "More Than Just Friends" floats off into a fantasy of what a casual relationship might become ("Permanently paint me in your picture like Picasso/Love me down till I hit the top of my soprano!"). "Ribbon" and "The Impossible" swoon with happiness and thankfulness over redemptive love that has returned to make life rich again. "You did the impossible," Carey sings. "You rescued my love."

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel ends with a spectacularly powerful gospel rendition of Foreigner's gorgeous ballad, "I Want to Know What Love Is." Carey's voice soars into the heavens as a soul-stirring choir makes it clear that the search for love is the closest that any human being ever gets to the divine.

Which brings us back to the angel of the album's title. "I had written a song called 'Imperfect,'" Carey says, "but it didn't make it onto the album. The lyrics of that song address the fact that the world puts so much pressure on us -- especially on women -- to be perfect and look a certain way, and that is impossible because nobody is perfect. Only God is perfect. I know I've tried to be a good person, but I am definitely no angel!"

"But after I put this album together and decided to name it Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," she concludes, "I remembered that the Minnie Riperton album that contained 'Lovin' You' was called Perfect Angel. So I felt in so many ways that it was meant to be."

I liked it at first listen, but I didn't love it. It sounded a little bland, boring especially in the beginning. After listening to it over and over all day it has grown on me so much that I canNOT stop listening! It's a huge addiction. The more I listen, the more I fall in love.

I think it will take a little while for people to catch on to it (maybe like Obsessed), but with the right promotion, it's definitely going to be HUGE, even in Europe.

Perez Flopton, as usual, didn't like it, but he admitted that her voice sounded good ;)

Granted, Hilton never had any kind of reputation for being objective or savvy in the way of the words, but at least he’s always given credit where credit was due, those in the other group say. In this particular case, no one can deny Mariah’s breathtaking rendering and vocal acrobatics on the ballad, even if not many are willing to give it a listen because it’s such a soppy, “girlie” song. Still, taken outside the context of today’s market (which is one of the things Perez reproaches to the singer, namely that she has “lost touch with who she is in the marketplace”), Mariah’s ballad is stunning to say the least.

“Mariah’s vocal delivery for most of the song is the restrained, breathy whisper that she’s employed to great effect in the post-‘Glitter’ era – it barely opens up on the chorus until the second time through, which is surprising because it renders the overall effect sort of flat at first. Things get better a bit on the second run-through – you can actually hear the heartbreak and pain that she’s singing about – and carry through that way until the very end of the song, when the gear-shift key change kicks in, and the gospel choir swoops down from the heavens, and Mariah’s even playing with the trademark octave-leaping that set her out from the diva pack all the way at the beginning of her career.”

She can sing this live! Compare this song to WBT, it's just much much MUCH easier. We belong together, according to Clive Davis is the hardest song to sing live due to the huge maintain belting and a belting long note. And she did WBT live in grammy, bet award, bet live, mtv video award and live 8. She can sing her ass off. Depend on how she rest. The whistle at the end is IMMENSE, a D7! HER HIGHEST STUDIO NOTE SINCE 1990's Mariah Carey album! OMG

Live 8 is LIVE. How can it not be a live when you can hear her breathe loudly at the end like grasping for air. Live 8 is 100% live. She hit the "we" in different note and you can hear her chest build up big and breathe like she running out of all. You can hear her grasping for air at the end of performance. Grammy is partly live (but can debate), but still she can sing live! Just that she don't sing a lot live to preserve voice like Celine Dion. Every artists can sing live!

Ok prove me that she lip synch. If she lip synch I don't see why she grasp for air so hard and her chest build up so much. Unless her acting skills are far superior than any1 in hollywood. The "We" belong together note is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from any1 of she did. Give me a show she perform, the ending is identical with Live 8. I hope you can find cause it's cannot be found. She did live for live 8. She did live for make it happen and hero and we belong together.

[youtube:1ljk57nw]dhUcNF3g5bo&feature=related[/youtube:1ljk57nw]

Look on 2:42 onward, how her chest eventually become push up.
And the "We" note at 3:07 is so rough and powerful, which is not similar to any ending.
At 3:20, you can see how her chest move and she is grasping for air.
Lastly: 3:24, 3:26 to 3:27, you can clearly hear her grasping air cause she hold her breath very long for the ending.

It's a wrap and Angel (Interlude) wrote by Mariah Carey alone herself

Angel sure is an short and meaningful with a message behind like Rainbow (Interlude).

Languishing, angel cry.. Looking forward to it!

The album is about long? 70minutes
The album is quite lengthy, most song above 4 minutes. So this means that she is showing more of her vocals!
Compare to E=MC2 where majority of the song is around 3:30minutes. =D

I want to know what love is, the timing true? 3minutes and 27 seconds, shorter than the radio edit?   I believe it's 4 minutes and 27 seconds?

I got a feeling this album is gonna be a HUGE hit like TEOM. The album track all look very meaningful and exciting! It's like a ballad type album like BUTTERFLY. This album is gonna to do well!

Thanks for the production credits! I'm very excited for this album, and I really hope it does better than her last. I'm glad Mariah is writing a couple songs all by herself :P

The only letdown is that she worked with the same two producers on every single song. If they're great, though, then I don't care ;)

Earlier today, the “Kyle & Jackie O Show” played Mariah Carey’s cover of “I Want To Know What Love Is” about 7:10am!

Before the song was played, the hosts of the show hyped it up..

When Jackie announced that they were about to play the track, Geoff gasped in excitement! He reponded by saying he couldn’t wait to hear it and said “this will be her comeback”..
Kyle then said “No… well I think The Emancipation of Mimi was her comeback, but I think this will just take it to another level”..

Jackie said she was also excited to hear it! Jackie said “this is gonna be a huge hit”…
After the premiere, they spent two minutes raving on about how amazing it was and how much of a smash it is! They were saying stuff like “Yep.. We knew she would do it well and did you hear her then? WOW”.. Then Richard Reid (the gossip guy who ALWAYS trashes her) said that the song gave him chills and that he LOVED it…

Overall, they loved it!

We highly recommend that Australian fans send some feedback in regards to the track by filling in this form! (http://www.2dayfm.com.au/contact)

Finally, during “Last Calls” segment, Jackie mentioned that the Mariah interview is “still on the way”.. .The crew got all got happy again and complimented the Foreigner cover, especially Geoff… To finish the show, Chris Page came on & said that, because of the many calls from listeners and great feedback, 2DayFM are going to play it in the next hour and throughout the day!

Mariah Carey: The smitten newlywed on her new album

Mariah Carey has sold more than 160 million albums worldwide, and, if radio play for the first single on her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, is any indication, she's on the verge of racking up more No. 1 hits than the Beatles. But underneath the pop varnish, Carey's just a smitten newlywed in the middle of a home renovation, juggling a job and a new puppy. Sort of...

Congratulations on the album! Can you describe the new sound?
Each song is its own snapshot of a moment in a story. But overall, the vibe is R&B hip-hop with a lot of slow jams.

What kind of mood were you in when you wrote the album?
Each song has its own mood; some flow seamlessly into each other, and that was the purpose, and others are very different. The album has a sense of humor you can hear me laughing out loud at certain points but it also has deep and introspective moments.

Is there a track that holds special meaning for you?
Since I write almost all my songs, they all do. But a song like "The Impossible" is very much where my life is right now because I am actually in love for the first time.

Congratulations on celebrating your one-year wedding anniversary with Nick Cannon. How's married life?
Amazing, better every day.

How do you two spend your free time?
We travel a lot. I think we've been to over 35 cities already.

Did Nick weigh in on the album?
We tend to do our own thing, but I did like sharing the process of this album with him, as we have the same taste in music and he's a great DJ and loves music.

You just bought a house in L.A. What's it like?
It's a Georgian manor. We basically redid the entire thing, from the floors to landscaping to the closets, which are inspired by my New York apartment, with a men's and women's department store-esque feeling! Of course, I have the salon and Nick has a basketball court, which is his favorite place in the house. And I love having the outdoor space so the dogs can play. It's not too small; it's not too big; it's not a monstrosity. It's a home.

Are you permanently moving to L.A.?
No, I'm bicoastal and always have been. When I came to L.A., I just used to stay in hotels or rented homes.

You've been looking great lately. How do you stay in shape?
When I want to lose weight, I'll avoid carbs and anything fried. I eat mostly soups with protein, and drink lots of water and chamomile tea.

You love your Jack Russell terriers. How's your puppy, Cha-Cha?
She's adorable. Nick got her for me as a present, but she loves me the best! She sleeps in the bed with me when Nick goes to work. And she gets along with Jack Junior, aka JJ, my other dog. We want to breed them!

So, now that you're happily married and have completed yet another album, do you think you'll ever take a break?
I've been doing a lot of other interesting things, which I'm super excited about, like filming Precious. It's an incredible movie by Lee Daniels, inspired by the novel Push, written by Sapphire. I read it a long time ago, and it changed my life. Everyone should read it.

Forget for a moment that you're an international superstar. How would you describe yourself?
Hmmm... festive, emotional, creative, "artsy," a jokestress.

How often do you think about music? Is it always in your head?
Constantly! It has been ever since I can remember. I always have a song that's a melody I'm making up, or a song on the radio. Music is a constant for me and it always will be.

You've had so much success. Where would you like to be in 10 years?
I try to live in the moment. It says in the Bible, Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

WHITNEY HOUSTON

Vocal acrobatics: 4/5. Still packs a mighty wallop, most notably on the skyscraping chorus of I Will Always Love You, though recent troubles may have dulled her vocal fire.
Elaborate outfits: 2/5. Never known for her style, she looks far from sexy on the cover of the new album, though it’s better than some of the tabloid shots during her lowest ebb.
Ridiculous demands: 3/5. Not so nutty really, though she did require an armoured car to take her on a tour of south-east Asia in 2004.
Rocky relationships: 5/5. Married to jailbird Bobby Brown from 1992 to 2007, their relationship was the subject of many drug rumours. He was charged with misdemeanour battery for allegedly striking her in 2003.
Quotability: 4/5. Most infamously: “We don’t do crack… Crack is wack.”
Fragrance: 0/5. None to date.
New album: I Look to You, released 19 October on Arista.

SHAKIRA

Vocal acrobatics: 3/5. More of a semi-yodel than the full hairdryer effect.
Elaborate outfits: 4/5. Not a big fan of clothes. Favours leotards in her latest video. Midriff exposed whatever the weather.
Ridiculous demands: 2/5. “Six bananas, five peaches and three mangoes” were required before one gig.
Rocky relationships: 2/5. Engaged forever to Antonio de la Rúa, son of the former president of Argentina. Almost certainly the only diva to count a Nobel Prize-winning author among her biggest fans, Gabriel Garcia Márquez.
Quotability: 5/5. Who could forget Whenever, Wherever’s classic couplet: “Lucky that my breasts are small and humble/So you don’t confuse them with mountains”?
Fragrance: 4/5. Amuleto, which reflects “an ethnic mixture of her soul and Latin sensuality, with exotic Arabian passion”.
New album: She Wolf, released 12 October on RCA.

LEONA LEWIS

Vocal acrobatics: 4/5. So far ahead of her X Factor competitors it was embarrassing.
Elaborate outfits: 2/5. Every day’s a wedding day for Leona. It’s one posh gown after another.
Ridiculous demands: 1/5. “I don’t need anything special to be happy. I have everything I need,” she says. Boring!
Rocky relationships: 1/5. Boyfriend Lou Al-Chamaa is an electrician from Hackney she has known since she was 10.
Quotability: 1/5. “I’m not a loud, extravagant person. I’m never going to be that.” As bland as a professional golfer.
Fragrance: 3/5. Leona Lewis, an ethical perfume including blood orange, “passion-filled musk” and “bewildering currant”.
New album: Echo, released 16 November on Sony.

MARIAH CAREY

Vocal acrobatics: 5/5. A five-octave range. That’s a lot of notes.
Elaborate outfits: 3/5. Favours the leggy and busty, or simply a strategically placed hat on the Touch My Body single sleeve.
Ridiculous demands: 4/5. Ferries her Jack Russell around by chauffeur-driven Mercedes, though the believable notion that she “doesn’t do stairs” is sadly a myth.
Rocky relationships: 4/5. Side Effects, a song about her marriage to Tommy Mottola, mentions “violent times”.
Quotability: 4/5. “Butterflies follow me wherever I go.”
Fragrance: 5/5. M, combining incense, tiara flower and marshmallow, “embodies Mariah’s sensuality, beauty and glamour”.
New album: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, released 28 September on Mercury.

An Intimate Affair with Mariah Carey
The article below appears in the Sept. 11-17 edition of Las Vegas Review-Journal's Neon magazine.

GETTING PERSONAL
Mariah Carey shows at Pearl give audience chance to get close to star

Greco has a working relationship with the superstar singer, who celebrated the one-year anniversary of her marriage to actor/comedian Nick Cannon at the Palms last year, and so he reached out to her camp with a proposal of his own.

"I basically said, 'How do you feel about doing something a lot more intimate?' " Greco recalls. "And the reaction was, 'Wow, that's a great idea.' "

And so Carey agreed to do two, two-night stands at the 2,500 seat Pearl at the Palms, which begins this weekend before returning on Oct. 9.

For Carey, who can still fill the largest of halls and who packed the MGM Grand Garden arena when she last performed in Vegas in 2006, these are among the most up-close-and-personal shows of her career.

And of course, they raise the obvious question: Will Carey eventually partake in a Vegas residency of her own?

"I think it's a logical step for her, it's just a question of when," Greco says. "She has as many number one songs as Elvis. This is a legitimate superstar, somebody who could do a show, not do five of her biggest songs and still leave people satisfied."

The timing seems to be in Carey's favor. She's two decades into a career that's seen her notch 18 number one hits, win an armload of Grammys and move more than 60 million records in America alone, where she was the top selling artist of the '90s.

And unlike, say, Cher or Bette Midler, who still draw well but who don't sell many records these days or have much of a presence on the pop charts, Carey is still a real commercial force, with a new album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," due out on Sept. 29, that is all but assured of scoring her another number one debut.

If she was to perform in an extended run of shows here, Carey would rank high among the artists with the most contemporary album-selling power to ever engage in a prolonged residency.

And her audience is arguably broader than that of the Celine Dions of the world.

In a way, Carey has had two careers: Upon releasing her self-titled debut in 1990, she became a household name with soaring, climactic ballads and generally tame R&B-lite hits with her five-octave alto booming through her tunes like cannon fire. For the most part, her songs were chaste and well-mannered, with Carey playing the role of the good girl next door with a voice the size of Rhode Island.

She was a safe and likeable pop star whose appeal resonated with both teens and parents alike.

By the mid-'90s, Carey started to incorporate subtle touches of hip-hop into some of her material, most notably on her remix of "Fantasy," which featured an appearance by since-deceased Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard.

But after beginning to stagnate a bit with 1999's "Butterfly" and bombing completely with 2001's "Glitter" movie and soundtrack, after which her label at the time, Virgin Records, paid Carey $27 million to go her own way, she started to see her star dim.

With 2005's much more hip-hop influenced and libidinal "The Emancipation of Mimi," however, Carey got her mojo back, notching the highest selling album of the year.

In doing so, she began to reach younger rap-weened fans. She embraced more revealing, curve smothering clothes, wed a dude 11 years her junior and even appeared on the cover of Playboy at one point.

All of a sudden, a heightened sexuality seemed to spring from Carey like a buxom jack-in-the-box, lending her a more youthful vigor despite the fact that she had been in the business for more than a decade-and-a-half by that point.

But in embracing a more contemporary, urban direction, could Carey alienate her older fan base, a demographic that tends to have more disposable income than their younger counterparts? Certainly, some of the success of Celine, Cher and Bette has been attributable to the fact that they draw a well-monied baby boomer crowd from all their hits in the '70s. These are the kind of folks who can afford trips to Vegas and premium-priced tickets to see a superstar in a more cozy setting.

Are Carey's prospects a bit less certain if she doesn't appeal to this audience?

"For me, it's not a concern at all," Greco says. "I think she's going to have tremendous legs."

No one is going to argue that Carey's legs aren't, in fact, tremendous, but will those legs be strutting across The Pearl stage in a more extended engagement in the near future?

"We've certainly had discussions," Greco says. "When the time is right, she'll know and we'll know. It'll be a decision that's based on convenience and logistics. I think it's definitely a distinct possibility."

This article has many mistakes, such as saying her album Butterfly was released in 1999.

FMQB: Bet On "I Want To Know What Love Is"
MARIAH CAREY
"I Want To Know What Love Is"
(Island/IDJMG)

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a big fan of remakes. Some artists, and in many cases new artists, often resort to launching their careers with such recordings. But when an established Grammy Award winning superstar artist decides to record a remake they better choose wisely, and Mariah Carey does just that with a classy re-working of Foreigner's #1 hit from 1984, "I Want To Know What Love Is." MC is at her very best vocally, delivering a heartfelt emotion and passion that is sure to connect with an even wider audience than the #1, "Obsessed," which generated lots of headlines and buzz. It's the perfect follow-up and launch track for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, a new album due September 29. It's a big song that only a big artist could handle... Mariah Carey is that artist! MC shines with a performance that screams multi-format hit! BET ON IT!

She just had to go and destroy angels cry, didn't she ??? She sounds so impassionate in the ending that i feel like strangling her.The Live version was HEAVEN HEAVEN HEAVEN.

As for HATEU: I HATE this song.It SUCKS.Don't understand why on earth this song is good to ANY set of ears.
That being said,I LOVE this album.Candy bling is UNDERRATED and AWESOME

Anyway, this is wat a guy/gal named overloaded breast(lmfao) had to say:

I made my best friend go on YouTube (she never buys CDs unless I buy them as gifts for her anyway so I don't really care) to listen to the album and she said it was OK (she is a CASUAL MC fan, at best). Her favorites: Standing O, Betcha Gon Know and ULTIMATE favorite, Angels Cry. She said she is in LOVE with that song. Songs she didn't like at all: Languishing and, surprise surprise, HATE U...

Anyway, just thought the lambs would like to know what the general, non-Lamb public felt about this album.

Also, thank you to all those who sent me the album, in all seriousness. Y'all know Mariah is my girl.

^Hey no need to say sorry to me.I'm glad if you like ANY mariah song

My ratings fot the songs that I've heard more than once:

Angels Cry 11/10. I finally got over her wierd belting in the end.Perfection.
Betcha Gon Know: 10/10. This song is her darkest yet and exudes this vibe that makes you wanna get popcorn and settle into a couch and read the lyrics while singing/listening along.Just fab.

ribbon: 8/10. It got spoiled for me a bit.
Candy Bling:9/10 It's the most underrated song here. Her voice is velvety and surreal.
H.A.T.E.U:5/10 Still can't get into this song.It sound boring to me.
standing O : 9.5/10: This song is genius. The hook is HOT.

When she's on the money, she is unbeatable; she is the Queen of her field, when she's on the money. I've said to Sam on many occasions that I do believe Mariah has the most flawless discography of any female artist, ever. I however do think that this is a very average album. Besides the few stand out tracks that I LOVE, the album just is not growing on me, and that's bad! I love Mariah - she's one of the few female singers that bettered herself with each release - but this is just bleh for me atm.

Favourite tracks:

Angels Cry
HATE U
Standing O
I Want To Know What Love Is

01. Betcha Gon Know 9/10
02. Obsessed 10/10
03. Hate U 10/10
04. Candy Bling 9/10
05. Ribbon 8.5/10
06. Inseperable 8/10
07. Standing O 10/10
08. Its A Wrap 8.5/10
09. Up Out My Face 10/10
10. Up Out My Face Reprise 8/10
11. More Than Just Friends 8/10
12. The Impossible 9/10
13. The Impossible Reprise 9/10
14. Angel 10/10
15. Angels Cry 10/10
16. Languishing 10/10
17. I Want To Know What Love Is 10/10

OVERALL : 9.3/10

Well I just have to say she blew me away with this one. Standing 0 may be the best uptempo on the album. While H.A.T.E.U is the best ballad. Languishing reminds me so much of Butterfly, If I would of randomly heard that song, I wouldn't of known it was from 2009. :o Well this is probably her 2nd best album this decade, after 'Glitter'. I'm blown away. And this is the best album of 2009, so far.

I hope the singles are like this :

1. Obsessed
2. I Want To Know What Love Is
3. Standing 0
4. H.A.T.E.U
5. Up Out My Face
6. Angels Cry

Betcha Gon' Know :grinlove: :grinlove: :grinlove:
Obsessed :grinlove:
H.A.T.E.U. :grinlove: :grinlove:
Candy Bling :grinlove:
Ribbon :grinlove:

The Impossible :grinlove:
Angels Cry :grinlove: :grinlove:
Languishing (The Interlude) :grinlove:
I Want To Know What Love Is :grinlove: :grinlove:

OK SO PRETTY MUCH EVERY TRACK IS A FAVOURITE.
Not that I don't like "It's a Wrap"... I just think I would rather have 'My Love' on the album instead of that song :teehee:

So yeah, this is definitely the fasted I've ever taken to a Mimi album. I love all the tracks. Whereas the last 2 had some tracks that I flat out did not like.
I really enjoy the variety of vocals on the album. And it just flows so coherently as a whole :grinlove:

Island Def Jam is not taking any chances with “Angel,” by the way. They’re starting with the release of Mariah covering Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is,” followed by a slew of potential singles — “Angels Cry,” “Ribbon,” and at least two others.

I know IDJ won't release Betcha Gon know even if their life depended on it.But if there was ever a time to have a breakthrough in video sales,it wud be now.An interesting vid with appropriate(not-cheap) production can easily do that for this song.

This has crazy potential for a vid.Plus the fact that the song is HOT helps too.

3) Betcha USA/Angels Cry WW
4) UOMF
5) HATEU.(This is a killer song but it's one of those songs that NEEDS to be picked up by radio, hence a risk.)

Standing O is a very good song, but it's not an Umbrella like some enthusiastic pple are making it to be.Plus,I can even go far as to say MAriah's typical style ruins it a bit(for eg. the never ending screams of "All you did was pound on it.")

I even feel that this is one of her weaker albums. And most importantnly there is no song on this album that can create the WBT magic-the sheer madness and anticipation for a mariah album.

She may think R&B is her field, but she just doesn't match up to the brilliance that was exhibited in her earlier work.Say what you want, she just is not as good.

I don't say that she should go back to Pop.Coz believe me,i wudn't mind another WBT,DFAU,ILT,FLAB,etc. but a good song is good song.Genre has nothing to do with it.Since she just isn't as good in this genre, she NEEDS a Tommy Mottola, who steers her to that pop direction, yet keeps her subtle elements of R&B (Honey-ABMB).

This just sounds like I'm in a hater condition or I'm whining, but I'm just trying to put this across as offenselessly as possible.I love her too.But in the age where 20 somethings can create absolute, mega smashes in R&B,electro etc. Mariah's average candy bling/ribbon/standing O have no place. That's just reality.

H.A.T.E.U or UOMF for 3rd single, please :)

So this is how I would rate the album:

Betcha Gon' Know :grinlove: :grinlove: :grinlove:
Obsessed :grinlove:
H.A.T.E.U. :grinlove: :grinlove:
Candy Bling :grinlove:
Ribbon :grinlove:
Inseparable :grinlove:
Standing O :grinlove: :grinlove:
It's A Wrap
Up Out My Face :grinlove: :grinlove: :grinlove:
More Than Just Friends :grinlove: :grinlove: :grinlove:

It is an amazing album! My #3 of hers every (with Daydream as #2 and Butterfly as #1), but I don't agree about It's a Wrap. My Love is nice for what it is but it's generic, nothing special and not good enough to be on an MC record.

My favorite tracks are H.A.T.E.U., Languishing, Betcha Gon' Know, Candy Bling, and The Impossible!

its also my #3 fave studio album by her..

i agree on releasing betcha gon know because its groundbreaking and beyond-career re-defining and with a darker video this could be IT-the long awaited 19th #1- I really believe that

I don't see Betcha Gon' Know getting a release. Unfortunately.
My only reason for this, is because it's titled as a prologue, so I probably have no idea what I'm talking about :teehee:
Although I would LOVE for it to be the last single off the album, and then her next single off a new album be part 2 :cheer:

^ hey that's a good idea. :cheer:

BUt Angels Cry needs to be the last(In USA).If pple say this is just another rehash,oh well, whatever,She's given us other singles.

so yesterday was my off day.Constant repeat listens yesterday nite,i just have to say this:

Island def jam,Listen carefully :

If you want Mariah to resume her tradition of 3xp albums,PUT OUT HATEU.

HATEU NEEDS TO BE SENT TO POP/RYTHMIC/URBAN IN A WEEK.A feature in a good romantic movie will only do more wonders. You have NO IDEA how this song will sound as part of the background score when a sad moment's going on in the film.

seondly,ANGELS CRY.Plz let it be the 2nd single wW.Let's face it,NOTHING on this album is going to set international charts on fire.ANGELS CRY IS IT.

After this,

4) UOMF -USA
5) Standing O -Usa.

PLeaseeee !!!! lol.

I will be the first to say I was wrong about HATEU.The reason why switched from betcha to HATEU is the reason that I KNOW they won't release the former.
HATEU is simply bliss.

This album is great lyrically. "Betcha Gon' Know" is a pleasure to listen to, the lyrics are reminiscent of Breakdown.

AP Review: Carey's 'Imperfect Angel' is perfect
Associated Press
By Mesfin Fedaku

Music Review: Carey's 'Imperfect Angel' is perfect
"I should crack you right in your forehead," Mariah Carey sings on the breakup tune "It's a Wrap."

The song, on her latest CD, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," finds a hungover Carey kicking her lover to the curb with particularly harsh words.

"Another early morning, and you walk in like it's nothing ... ain't no doughnuts, ain't coffee," she sings with attitude in her signature high-pitch tone. "Let me take a breath and regain my composure, told you more time, if you (expletive) up it's over."

But even though she's spitting venom, Carey's cooing on the doo-wop sounding song is so sensuous and sweet, even the song's intended target will remain under her spell – as will her listeners.

"Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" is an exceptional album that is about love – being in it, out of it, over it and trying to reach it. While the subjects are tried and true, they are never tired, thanks to Carey's approach, which mixes a good dose of humor and wit with her multi-octave voice.

"Betcha Gon' Know," the disc's opening track, sets the tone as Carey compares the seriousness of her broken heart to news programs like "60 Minutes," "20/20" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Carey produced and wrote the majority of the album with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash – and those hitmakers add their own touch to "Imperfect Angel" without overdoing it.

"Ribbon," which bumps with southern flavor, is radio-friendly, showcasing The-Dream and Tricky's signature sound. As does "Standing O," with its addictive hook.

Other notables tunes include "H.A.T.E.U." ("Having a Typical Emotional Upset"), a beautiful heartbreak ballad, and the top-notch "Candy Bling," a teenage love affair tune that finds Carey so in love she "can't delete your picture from my mind."

Some of the tracks use samples: "Inseparable" interpolates Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" and "The Impossible" finds Carey "layin' in the bed bumpin' Jodeci." The latter samples the R&B group's hit song "Forever My Lady."

"Imperfect Angel," though helmed by The-Dream and Tricky, still maintains a classic Mariah sound – especially on the soothing "Angels Cry" and its accompanying prelude, and the personal "Languishing," highlighted by a piano.

No one is perfect – that's obvious. This CD is – that's obvious too.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "It's a Wrap" joins tracks like "Vision of Love," "Always Be My Baby" and "We Belong Together" as a classic Mariah song.

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (Island)
By Lauren Carter
Rating: B+

Singing is fun again! And so is Mariah. On her 12th studio album, Mimi gets a face-lift from urban music's current hit-king The-Dream and his sidekick Tricky. The duo's textured, often quirky brand of r & b has birthed some of the biggest hits in recent memory - Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" - but here they opt for a lighter touch. "Ribbon" and crunk-laced single "Obsessed" are the closest "Memoirs" comes to hip-hop; the remainder is a throwback mix of ballads and midtempo r & b mini-sagas that let Carey wander into whispers, purrs, high-octave whistles and full-throttle force (check out "It's a Wrap"). Sassy and occasionally ridiculous lyrics ("love you like a freeze pop") bring out a playful side that offsets the time Carey spends languishing in lost love territory. She's at her best when dismissing, not missing, that no-longer-special someone, as on the track to download, "Up Out My Face."

Mariah Carey, comedian? Jokes have never been Carey's forte, but on her 12th album, she gets in touch with her funny bone, adding a cheeky marching-band coda to the thumping club jam "Up Out My Face," threatening to out a cheating lover on national television in "Betcha Gon' Know" ("Oprah Winfrey whole segment, for real"); even poking fun at her own vocal signature, those stemware-shattering falsetto trills ("Love me down till I hit the top of my soprano," she coos in "More Than Just Friends"). The levity reflects the company Mariah is keeping: Every track on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel was overseen by Carey and the ace duo of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who have been known to spice their dense, inventive R&B concoctions with yuks.

The result is Carey's most sonically and tonally coherent release, a mix of love ballads ("Inseparable") and sassy breakup anthems ("Standing O") that might have been her best album had it been several songs shorter. Memoirs sags in its second half, on songs such as the tepid "Impossible" and "Languishing (The Interlude)." By the time Carey's plodding cover of "I Want to Know What Love Is" rolls around, the joke's on her listeners.

About
By Bill Lamb
Rating: 4/5

Once upon a time it was the norm on major pop albums for an artist to work with one producer or team of producers throughout an entire album. However, in recent years it has become more common to create an album as a hodgepodge of sometimes mismatched tracks recorded with various producers. For Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Mariah Carey has collaborated primarily with the team of The-Dream and "Tricky" Stewart for songwriting and producing throughout the entire album. The result is a unique, cohesive musical glimpse of the inner life of Mariah Carey.

Flights of Vocal Fancy
For fans of Mariah Carey, the quality of her singing and direction of her vocal arrangements are one of the first things looked for in a new album. As has become common since The Emancipation of Mimi, she spends most of her time singing in a midrange that eliminates much of the vocal acrobatics of earlier in her career. However, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel does insert enough moments of vocal fancy to keep most fans happy.

In the sad, painfully slow "H.A.T.E.U," Mariah Carey delivers one of the key refrains in a lower range narcotized vocal haze that serves to emphasize the song's message of the emotional torment of lovers being torn apart. "It's a Wrap" kicks off with classic ethereal Mariah Carey vocal runs followed by an impossibly high range note that has a sonic effect of a small comet zipping through the musical sky. Then there is the glorious vocal workout on "I Want To Know What Love Is" that closes the album. Mariah Carey fans will be standing and cheering.

It's Not So Much Fun Being Mariah Carey?
One of the key messages of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is that, emotionally at least, it's not always a lot of fun being Mariah Carey. "Obsessed" details anger and anxiety at being stalked. "H.A.T.E.U." explores the emotional pain of being trapped in a relationship where the writing is on the wall. "Up Out My Face" presents anger at an incompatible lover. The album reaches its most painful moments in the elegant "Languishing" about being in a relationship with someone you still don't feel you know after many years. Mariah Carey is left wondering, "Would you reach for me if you saw that I was languishing?" A musical up side of all of this emotional pain is that the gospel catharsis of "I Want To Know What Love Is" is gloriously effective.

Top Tracks on 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel'
• "H.A.T.E.U."
• "It's a Wrap"
• "Up Out My Face"
• "I Want To Know What Love Is"

Solid Musical Statement
Mariah Carey set out on this album to explore her inner self and lay it bare in song. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is a solid, cohesive musical statement that works as that very rare thing in today's pop music world, a genuine concept album. Mariah Carey has clearly suffered her share of emotional pain, but she remains standing, and, in the performance of "I Want To Know What Love Is," it sounds like she is positively resolute about heading fearlessly into the future. The recording standards here are of a very high quality, and the songs grow in interest with repeated listening. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is a worthy addition to the Mariah Carey catalog.

Well, Mariah pretty much just confirmed a re-release with more than one Timbaland track and 100% on it.

To clarify:

During the interview, Carey also addressed the case of the album's missing songs. Carey had worked with heavyweight producers Timbaland and Jermaine Dupri on a number of tracks, none of which made it onto Memoirs. The songstress assured fans, however, that they'll soon get a chance to give everything a listen.

"They're not on the album, but we have a special something planned that [record exec] L.A. Reid would be very angry with me if I discussed right now on MTV," she teased. "But for the fans, there will be more than one Timbaland track and at least one J.D. track."

She looks so ... uncomfortable sometimes. Anyway, my verdict:

Make It Happen - just a mess. Absolutely horrendous once she started to belt. There is struggling, and then there is what happened here. The first half was very good though

Obsessed - I actually really enjoyed this! As somebody on Youtube said, the live arrangement is really questionable though. But her vocals were good

I Want To Know What Love Is - amazing! The live parts were SO good. And that whistle is mesmerizing. I honestly loved this!

H.A.T.E.U. - not watched yet

All in all, she did good!

Well, I can give a full judgement on this now. Its .. good, if a little bland in places. An album of two halves for sure - there's about 3-4 songs that I'd actually rank as 'all-time' - Angels Cry, Standing O, I Want To Know What Love Is..
