I'm so in love with this album, one of the best of 2009 for sure.
It's soo... incredible!

I am just not feeling it :( It's all a bit...... average. A couple of tracks I really like but there is just no consistent vibe to the album and there is definately no smash hit singles that I can hear.

I actually can't listen to IWKWLI anymore, her voice sounds really harsh, especially on the whispery bits it just doesn't sit well with the track. So now I listen to Rhona Bennets version instead..... much better

I am gutted, I had high hopes for this album when everyone was saying she is going back to 90's Mariah. This is definately not 90's Mariah.... not even close :(

^ I thought her voice sounded immaculate on IWTKWLI. LOL @ harsh. That's such a funny way of describing it.

Do you mean harsh on the ears? Or ..?

This has surely got to be some sort of an error.

erm yeah kind of. It just doesn't sound smooth or soft. It's a very hard sound... and it doesn't sit well with the music. But maybe it's just me because I have been listening to the Rhona version and her voice is smooooooooth like caramel.

Wayne

Meh caramel voices!

I think she sounded blistering! Who's this Rhona bird btw?

James
11-04-2009, 02:33 PM
Rhona Bennet..... She was int he Mickey Mouse club with Justin, Britters and Christina.

She was the first female signed to Darkchild Records and she recently became a part of En Vogue for quite a few years but has now been dumped as the original line up has got back together.

Her voice is out of this world but her album only got a japanese release. You should be able to find her single "Satisfied" on you tube. I don't know about her version of IWKWLI coz its an album track and shes not too popular. I would upload it but my PC at home is still broke as a joke. :p

Anywho Mariah...... eh. Please try harder LOL

^ WRONG!

Did you know that the cost of this album was around $7m!

From the London Times:

There are ads in the magazine, too, for Angel Champagne, upscale Le Métier de Beauté cosmetics, Forever perfume, Carmen Steffens shoes and the Bahamas tourist board. You can even win a trip to Mariah’s favourite island in the Bahamas by logging on to her official website. Carey is behind those, too. She and her record company, Island Def Jam, part of Universal Music Group, sold the ads for up to $100,000 a page, making far more than the peppercorn Elle was paid to produce the magazine.

Some ads are for Carey’s own products, such as her signature perfume, Forever. Some are for products produced by companies in which she has a stake, notably Angel champagne. Some are for firms in which Universal Music has a stake, such as Le Métier de Beauté. Some are for brands for which she acts as an ambassador, notably the Bahamas. Every time one of Carey’s fans buys one of the products she’s marketing, she gets a cut.

The “product integration” deal has covered most of the cost of recording Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, estimated at £4m.

Currently, £4m is equal to about $6.67 million US.

Well as for Alan Carr last night:

The interview was AMAZING. She was charming, funny, open. Really enjoyed it

The performance was painful, she struggled so much it was a little hard to watch. He voice sounded so forced. And again with the lypsynching on parts, she goes so over the top with the face on them parts.

No wonder she doesn't like IWKWLI, she can't sing it live :(

Her performance and interview on Alan Carr were sensational!

I have high hopes for the album and single here in the UK!

That is ridiculous! :P

This era is all about progression; the Mimi of this era has proven she still has her voice - the fact that a near 40 year old woman that has been singing her ass off for 20 years, attempts these songs, is a minor miracle in itself. I don't know which parts you think she struggled on, but from what I saw, she sounded absolutely phenomenal. It was the 'truest' performance of this era so far, and for that I think she should be applauded!

Remember James, you'd rather have a live performance, over a lipsynched one, no matter how painful it is! ;)

I would rather have a live one........... and she didn't sing completely live anyway! She did lip' parts, even some of the belts at the the end were lipped, thats when she went OTT with the face.

It I think we will hear better from her, but this sounded forced and anti-climactic. Sorry just my opinion.

I guarentee that after this album has ran its course Mariah will NEVER sing this song again. I mean she only sings half of it now :p

^ Okay :)

How do we think the album will do in the UK? I'm absolutely split now; on Youtube, the other message boards I frequent, the response to her performance has been incredible. If she doesn't mess X Factor up, I think the single could blow up! I also have faith in a top 10 and possibly top 5 album peak

James
11-20-2009, 09:28 AM
I think with a good X Factor performance a top 5 album is well within reach. I think top 10 for IWKWLI is believable.

I think the only thing that will hold her back is if she loses some attention to Susan Boyle on the X Factor, like what happened with Whitney/Cheryl.

But top 5 album, why not. Go get it MiMi. I honestly think Mariah could get a top 10 album in the UK just based on her name anyway at this point in her career.

I much preferred the X Factor performance to the Alan Carr one. I think maybe people will have to take it as a given that she always going to lipsynch parts of this song and just deal with......... she seemed more comfortable on X Factor. It was still a little anticlimatic but thats more to do with the arrangement of the song than Mariah herself.

Dissapointed... but hey ho. Let's see what happens with the project next.

Better than Charmbracelet at least.

oooooooooooooooooo. Bad times

I really can't explain why this album has bombed so hard.

I mean, she has promoted it. Obsessed wasn't worse than her other lead singles. I tend to think her lead singles from the last few projects all have the same sound "It's Like That", "Touch My Body" and "Obsessed".

I kind of understand why Charmbracelet flopped, she wasn't in a good place, the material wasn't up to scratch.

hmmmmmm, perplexing. Maybe people are bored of her.

it''s strange that it seems to be a global concensus tho.

Maybe she has tried so hard in the last few years to be a "relevent artist" she has deviated away from her path of becoming a legend in peoples eyes, to just another female RnB singer! The generation that listened to her last 2 albums are not the main fanbase that listened to her earlier stuff which made her into an icon.

Shame tho, this isn't a bad album. Much better than her previous effort. Maybe with the next album she should do some timeless tracks rather than what will fit into todays charts. That will get her back to the legend path and we all know Legends sell crap loads of albums without even trying. Look at Babs :)

Wayne
12-04-2009, 11:25 AM
Yes, Babs has sold consistently over 40 years. I think Mimi's decline was inevitable. At 40, people probably aren't taking her sexy image seriously. She looks terrific, but she still looks 40.

Gawd knows! I'm not a huge fan of this album though. But with fewer than 500,000 copies sold WW, months into its release...

She acts like she is any other 2nd rate RnB act though. Turning on Christmas lights at shopping centers and going on every chat show going. Surely someone of her calibre should just be doing the larger engagements? The general public don't look to her as a legend or icon anymore. Thats nothing to do with her talent etc..... it's how she has chosen to market herself, as a young relevent artist and by doing this she has become the exact opposite of that. Maybe she needs to realise she is 40 and is now a veteran in the industry.

It's a shame, she really deserves her seat alongside the Diva legends Babs, Aretha, Diana, Madonna, Whitney .........Mariah.

Maybe she needs a break and come back with an EPIC album in a few years. And they should think about marketing her in the same way Clive has done with Whitney. They have been really smart about building up her legendary status with this album.

I can't believe I am saying this already but MOAIA is DEAD :(
