Quite simply, the Beatles are by far the biggest-selling act in the history of music - they are the only act to have legitimately surpassed 400,000,000 around the world

First of all, we need to dismiss the 1,000,000,000 records claim as pure nonsense. They may surpass half of that, depending on how you count their sales.

When I did my own estimations, I came up with a grand total of 351,500,000+ albums shifted around the world. MJDangerous has conceded himself that their album sales are between 345,000,000-350,000,000, and basil & hanboo both undertook extraordinary studies and came up with totals between 355,000,000-363,000,000.

Thanks to this incredible (http://www.kronemyer.com/Beatles/Beatles%20Sales%201964-1985.pdf) piece of data, we have the Beatles US album sales up until 1985 (they total 74,786,835). We know from Soundscan that the Beatles have sold over 57,000,000 albums since 1991 in the USA. That leaves a gap of 5.5 years (86-mid 91).

74,786,835 + 57,000,000 = 131,786,835

The band is certified as having shipped 130.85mil albums in the USA. Counting double-albums and other missed sales (such as the 86-mid 1991 period), their US total album sales are reckoned to be at 162,500,000 (thanks basil)

Massive thankyou to Hanboo for his input. This is what he had to say:

Here's some Beatles world album sales info I posted on Dotmusic in 2003.

Total world sales official US/UK releases: 348.3 million
Total US certified: 134.2 million (170 m. counting double albums)

Apart from the UK and US releases, which were released all over the world,
most countries issued their own specific Beatles releases, especially before Apple came into being in 1968.
There are at least 50 albums, which were released by record companies like Capitol Canada, Odeon, Electrola, etc.

These are the most successful ones:

(sales in million, title)

2.0 Beatles in Italy
1.0 The Beatles Nr. 1-5 (1964 Mexican LPs)[/b]
1.0 The Beatles In The Beginning (ca. 1960)
1.0 Live At The Star Club Albums
1.0 Beatles Beat
1.0 20 Golden Hits
0.5 Greatest Hits (1965)
0.5 Beatles First
0.4 Songs, Pictures & Stories Of The Fabulous Beatles
0.3 14 Plus Grands Succes (1965)
0.2 Beatles Tapes

These 12 sold about 10 million. If we take an average of 100,000 for the other 48 albums, we reach a total of about 15 million.

Total world sales official US/UK releases: 348 million
Total world sales foreign releases: 15 million

Grand total: 363 million

Thankyou to Basil for his input

Part Six - UK Album Sales

Most of these figures come from Fedepeti and Miguel

Original Studio Albums

Please Please Me - 600,000
Fedepeti figures are not dated but look to be quite old - possibly just for the 1960's only. So,this figure looks too low, given it's huge chart performance, continuous availability for 42 years and CD sales since 1987.

With the Beatles - 1,500,000

A Hard Day's Night - 2,000,000

Beatles For Sale - 800,000
This figure seems too low/out of date

Help - 700,000
Too low again?

Rubber Soul - 2,500,000
Miguel's figures are more recent - from Q magazine in 1997. Fedepeti's figure was 800,000 which makes me think they are definitely 60's figures.

Revolver - 1,750,000

Sgt Pepper - 5,329,000
The UK's biggest selling album - sales up to September 2005

The Beatles - 2,200,000

Yellow Submarine
Don't know. Probably less than 1m.

Abbey Road - 3,200,000

Let It Be - 1,000,000

Compilations

1962-1966
1967-1970
Both of these "shipped" 300,000 back in 1973. Sales of both likely well over 1m.

Beatles One - 2,600,000

CD Era Releases

Magical Mystery Tour
Shipped 100,000 in CD format. Earlier Import and some UK sales from belated 1976 vinyl release.

Past Masters Vol 1
Past Masters Vol 2
No certification. Must be 100,000 each after 17 years on CD and these are essential to any fan to complete their collection

Studio Box (15CD's)
No figures. Perhaps 10-20,000

At the Beeb
Shipped 600,000. Sold 590,000 in it's first year.

Anthology One
Shipped 600,000.

Anthology Two
Shipped 300,000

Anthology Three
Shipped 100,000. Sold 140,000 in first year.

Yellow Submarine Songtrack
Shipped 100,000. Sold 68,000 in first year.

Let It Be - Naked
Shipped 100,000. Sold 216,000 in first year.

Capitol Box Vol 1
Very low sales in the UK

Other Compilations/Exploitation - not on CD

Collection of Beatles Oldies
No figures. 100,000??

Rock n Roll Music
Shipped 100,000

Live at the Hollywood Bowl
Shipped 100,000 in first year and TV advertised. Must have sold a lot more.

Love Songs
Shipped 100,000

Rarities
Shipped 60,000

Ballads
Shipped 100,000

20 Greatest Hits
Shipped 300,000. Could have sold up to 1,000,000

Beatles featuring Tony Sheridan
Shipped 100,000

Hey Jude
Low sales, sold more on import before 1979 vinyl release.

So there's a lot we don't know about UK Sales. EMI know, but it's a secret!

I estimate that in the 24 years from 1963-1986, they sold 29 million albums.

Part Five - The Beatles UK Albums Sales 1984-2004

following the release of 20 Greatest Hits in 1982, there were no new re-issues until 1987

1984 - total sales - 125,000

1985 - total sales - 175,000

amazing catalogue sales all on vinyl/cassette only

1986 - sales were less than 102,000

1987 - total sales - 507,000

13 studio albums are released on CD for the first time.
Sgt Pepper sold 170,000. So the other 12 albums did 337,000 between them.

1988 - total sales - 285,000

Past Masters Vols 1 and 2 were released and the CD re-issues carried on selling.

1989 - total sales - 256,000

all catalogue sales.

1990 - no figure

we have an end of year chart without sales which indicates sales of less than 200,000 - all catalogue titles

1991 - no figure

The band were 55 on the end of year chart, indicating sales of around 275,000 - all catalogue titles

1992 - no figure

The band were 38 on the end of year chart, indicating sales of around 300,000 - all catalogue sales boosted by 25th anniversary of Sgt Pepper.

1993 - 504,000

The Red and Blue compilations were released selling about 350,000 between them. Sgt Pepper sold 57,000 - the remaining 97,000 being catalogue sales.

1994 - 798,000

Live at the BBC released selling about 550,000. Sgt Pepper sold 47,000 with the catalogue selling about 201,000.

By march of 1995, the BBC album had sold 590,000.

1995 - 1,080,000

Anthology One released selling about 500,000. Sgt Pepper sold 61,000. Remaining catalogue sold 519,000.

1996 - 840,000

Anthology Two and Three released selling 200,000 and 140,000 respectively. Sgt Pepper sold 70,000. Remaining catalogue sold 430,000.

1997 - 550,000

Sgt Pepper sold 74,000. The remaining 476,000 was all catalogue sales.

1998 - 560,000

Sgt Pepper sold 106,000. The remaining 454,000 was all catalogue sales.

1999 - 588,000

Yellow Submarine Songtrack released selling 67,000, Sgt Pepper sold 85,000 leaving catalogue sales of 436,000.

2000 - 2,333,272

Beatles One released selling 1,850,000 and Sgt Pepper sold 61,000, so catalogue sales were 422,000.

2001 - 730,000

All catalogue sales, with One selling 402,000, Sgt Pepper 51,000 and the rest 277,000.

2002 - no figure.

Sales were less than 400,000, with One selling about 125,000 and Sgt Pepper 45,000.

2003 - 597,000

Let It Be - Naked released selling 216,000. One sold 110,000 and Sgt Pepper 40,000 leaving catalogue sales of 231,000.

2004 - no figure

Sales were less than 430,000. One sold 93,000 and Sgt Pepper 33,000.

So in the 21 years from 1987-2004 they sold between 10,766,000 and 11,427,000 albums in the UK, with The Beatles One selling over 2.5m.

In total, the Beatles are estimated to have shifted around 40,000,000+ albums in the UK - the biggest tally of all time

FAB FOUR COUNTDOWN: Plenty of buzzing over how Billboard and Soundscan will handle sales of Capitol/EMI's Beatles catalog, which hits retail on Sept. 9, day and date with MTV/Harmonix's much-anticipated The Beatles: Rock Band game. Will they follow the absurd precedent they've set with Michael Jackson, counting them on their regular charts in every country around the world except the U.S., where they are listed on the catalog tally? Enquiring minds want to know. (8/3p)

The Beatles' sales were staggeringly phenomenal. They broke every single record existing. Also, their music impacted our culture so much. Madonna and MJ wouldn't exist if it weren't for them! 8-)

According to Billboard, yesterday almost 6000 stereo box sets were sold in the UK.
Because each box contains 14 albums, albums and NOT CDs (those 14 albums correspond to 16 CDs), we can conclude that, just from this box set, 84,000 (84k) Beatles' albums were sold.

Thanks Edu

BEATLES UK CHART RECORDS IN THE CHART OF W/E 19th SEPTEMBER:,

THE FIRST GROUP TO HAVE 4 TOP 10 ALBUMS IN THE SAME CHART

1) They are the first Group - ever - to have 4 Top 10 Albums, in the same Week.
The only other Act to manage 4 - or more - was Michael Jackson - earlier in 2009.
He had 5 Top 10 Albums in the Chart of W/E 11th July. Then 6 in the W/E 18th July
Chart. Then 5 in the W/E 25th July Chart. (Until 2009, no Act had ever managed more
than 3 Top 10 Albums at once).

THE FIRST GROUP SINCE 1967 TO HAVE MORE THAN TWO TOP 10 ALBUMS AT ONCE:,

2) The last time, (by a Group), was just over 42 Years ago:,

THE MONKEES

W/E 15th July 1967

No.2 - HEADQUARTERS
No.4 - MORE OF THE MONKEES
No.6 - THE MONKEES

Only 10 Acts have ever managed it. Until now, The Beatles had yet to achieve it.

The only other Groups to manage 3 Top 10 Albums -
George Mitchell Minstrels, (3 Weeks - 1962 - 1963),
The Shadows, (9 Weeks - 1963), The Beach Boys, (2
Weeks - 1966), & The Monkees, (1 Week - 1967).

From Music Week's 50th anniversary supplement (referring to UK sales figures):

Top 10 Singles Artists 1959-2009
1 The Beatles 20,821,000
2 Cliff Richard 20,183,000
3 Madonna 16,793,000
4 Elvis Presley 15,824,000
5 Elton John 14,099,000
6 Michael Jackson 13,808,000
7 Queen 11,493,000
8 Abba 10,812,000
9 Paul McCartney 10,034,000
10 David Bowie 10,012,000

Note the following, though: Elvis' career began before September 1959. His career tally is actually 20,918,000 - so in terms of overall sales in the UK, madonna would be pushed down a slot to Number 4.

More Than 2.25 Million CDs Sold During First Week in North America, UK, Japan
LONDON, Sept. 22

Underlining their timeless appeal and unique status in music, The Beatles have broken multiple chart records around the world following the September 9, 2009 (9-9-09) CD release of their digitally re-mastered catalogue. In the major music markets of North America, Japan and the UK, consumers purchased more than 2.25 million copies of The Beatles' re-mastered albums, individually and in two multiple-CD boxed sets, one in stereo and one in mono, during the first five days of release (excluding non-traditional retail outlets whose sales are not tracked by the chart compilers).
The Beatles' original UK studio albums were re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.
The most popular band of the 20th century, The Beatles are beloved by music fans in the 21st century, as evidenced by their current unparalleled global chart performance:

• US: During the first five days of release, consumers purchased more than one million copies of re-mastered Beatles titles, and the individual CD and boxed sets debuted strongly across multiple Billboard charts.
o On Billboard's Comprehensive Albums chart, which lists the most popular album releases in the US, including current and catalogue titles, The Beatles set a new record for the most simultaneous titles by a single artist (18), including five of the top 10 and nine of the top 20.
o On the Pop Catalog chart, The Beatles achieved another new Billboard chart first for the most simultaneous titles in the top 50 (16), a record they previously set themselves with 12 titles in December 1995. The Beatles have nine of the chart's top 10 titles, and all 14 re-mastered CDs are in the top 20, led by 'Abbey Road' at number one and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' at number two.

From Music Week,

32 Beatles recordings make the Top 200, with four of them in the published Top 75. Hey Jude leads the way at number 40 (7,006 sales), followed by Let It Be (number 46, 5,801 sales), Twist And Shout (number 48, 5,633 sales, and Here Comes The Sun (number 64, 4,195 sales).

Overall, some 132,649 Beatles tracks were sold. 12,268 Beatles albums were also downloaded, against 19,256 Beatles CDs and 97 LPs.

Grand total: 164,270

The least popular Beatles track? Surprisingly, not the extremely lengthy, avant garde Revolution Number 9, which sold 48 copies, but the Rubber Soul song What Goes On?. Written by Lennon, McCartney and Starr, it was one of drummer Ringo’s rare lead vocals, and attracted just 14 downloads last week.

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH: The Beatles sold a reported 450k digital albums worldwide and more than 2 million individual song downloads since their iTunes launch last week. As we reported earlier (see Rumor Mill item below), the Fab Four moved a total of 310k albums (including the 16-disc box set) in the U.S. alone, which means nearly 2/3 of all Beatles digital sales were in the Colonies. The best-seller was Abbey Road, the only album to crack HITS’ Top 50 this week, with around 16k. (11/23p)

Beatles Sells 2 Million Songs in First Week on iTunes
Billboard.com

The initial Beatles sales figures are in: More than 450,000 albums and 2 million individual songs were sold on iTunes worldwide, according to Apple, since the Beatles catalog was made available Tuesday (Nov. 16). In U.S. the best-selling album was "Abbey Road" and best-selling song was "Here Comes the Sun."

Of that tally, U.S. album sales totaled 119,000 units, which included 13,000 digital box sets, while individual digital track sales reached 1.4 million, according to industry sources. Each digital box set included 13 studio albums, the two-volume "Past Masters" compilation and the "Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964" concert film. Sources say the U.S. album sales tally of 119,000 counts each box set as one unit, while Apple's worldwide album sales tally counts each box set as multiple sales units, although it wasn't immediately clear how many units each box set accounted for.

The Fab Four's debut-week sales on iTunes compare favorably with the first-week sales of previous iTunes holdouts. When Led Zeppelin's catalog made its digital debut in November 2007, the band generated total U.S. digital album sales of 47,000 units, which included sales of 33,000 units of the two-volume hits compilation "Mothership," which was released the same week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Led Zeppelin's first-week individual track sales totaled 300,000, according to SoundScan.

But these numbers also show that digital music consumers aren't necessarily holding their breath to pounce on buying music when holdouts finally join the fray. Led Zeppelin's entire catalog may have generated digital track sales of 300,000, but Eminem's digital track "Not Afraid" alone sold 379,000 units in the its debut week ended May 9, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

First-week digital track sales for superstar acts this year typically ranged from 100,000 to 300,000 per title, while digital album sales ranged anywhere from 40,000 to 278,000 for Taylor Swift's blockbuster third album "Speak Now."

The Beatles' debut on iTunes was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign, including prominent homepage placement on iTunes and TV spots that aired during Sunday's American Music Awards broadcast on ABC, Sunday Night Football on NBC and other prime-time programming.

Sources say the Beatles/iTunes media campaign is expected to kick into high gear this for Black Friday, with expanded TV advertising in the U.S. and full-page ads in the "Wall Street Journal" and the "New York Times."Pretty awesome achievement! :)
